OK,I'm in the minority here in thinking this book was only so-so. There were certain parts of the book that had me in tears, and then there were other parts that just didn't seem to fit into the whole book. The story is told from a bunch of different perspectives, but I almost wish they'd just kept the POV within the family and possibly the lawyer and judge. With all the different narratives, you get bits and pieces of peoples' lives, and sometimes I feel that leads to distraction. I loved the flashbacks or the pieces of family history- those, I felt, added to the whole complexity and dynamic within the family. BUT, why was there so much time spent on the lawyer and his ex? SUre, their romance was a sweet side story, but it really took up too much of the plot. Also, we have this whole mystery going on about the lawyer's medical ailment that really adds zilch (and, to be honest, pales in comparison to Kate's leukemia).
I guess what I'm trying to say is, when the story is told from the eyes of the family, it is intriguing. When narrative switches to someone outside the family, it starts to plod. Jodi Picoult is extremely good at capturing emotions and the tiny nuances within the not-so-perfect family. But this just isn't her best book.

This book has so many dimensions! A true page-turner that makes you think about your life as a mother and as a sister. The last 10 pages truly make the book.

There had been so much hype around this book because of the movie that I tried to keep my expectations in check. And I'm glad I did. While I enjoyed the book, I felt like the author just kept adding more and more lines to draw things out. What was said in 50 pages could have been said in 30, in my opinion. I just kept thinking, "get to the point, already!" Scenes were drawn out when they could have been more economized, is all I'm saying. Anyway, I did enjoy the book for the most part. I was definitely ready for it to end. And boy, what an ending! IT WAS NOT BELIEVABLE, and that part stuck with me for awhile. I kept telling myself, "well, that's what fiction is all about, Tammy." But, I dunno....I came to like the ending after it settled with me. Suspension of disbelief, they say.....

This was an amazing book! I'm a new mom myself, so this book had a whole new meaning to me. I'm not usually one to cry at books and movies, but this was definitely a tear jerker. Had me crying more than once! This was a wonderfully written story about an impossible situation. It's told from multiple points of view and each one is entirely believeable. I highly recommend this one.

This was a wonderful and engaging book that would have been even better without all the profane language. This is the first book I've read by Jodi Picoult so it may not hold true for her other books, but I am always put off by gifted authors who choose to take the easy route of revealing a character's personality primarily by the number of times they can say the "F" word. After the second time, I got it...He has anger issues.

This book is in my top 5. The ending literally made me cry and I was distraught for a couple of days afterward. Unfortunately for me, I finished the book during my lunch hour while at work. My boss kept asking me what had happened for the rest of the day, but when I tried to explain it was nothing, just a book; the tears started to flow again! It was later in the week before I could even talk about it. I passed this book to a co-worker and she had the same reaction when she finished reading it.
In short, I cannot recommend this book enough. Would give it more stars if I could!

I started reading this book because I needed a change of pace from all of the autism books that I have been reading, and this book turned out to be exactly what I needed. It is such a good "parenting" book. Sometimes as a mom you get so wrapped up in the sick child that it's easy to neglect the other children that you are also the mother of. I loved this book and highly recommend it. This was my first Jodi Picoult, and I can't decide if I like her writing style, but this was an excellent book!! (The movie totally sucks. They shouldn't even have the same title.)

I'm obviously in the minority here, but I thought this book sucked. I was being generous when I gave it 2.5 stars. Actually, the idea, the concept was great - really made me think as a parent "what would I do?" - but the ending was such an f-ing cop-out. The story is as much about Anna and her growing up as it is about the family. Having Anna die and having her attorney (who, btw, just fought for her to have medical emancipation so she wouldn't have to give up her kidney) donate her organs was another jarring example of how Anna was, really, just a "spare parts" daughter. Kate was always the most important to the mother and Anna was only conceived so that Kate would live. Anna never had an identity outside of "Kate's on-call donor" and when she was given the opportunity, the possibility, of being something else, Picoult snatched it away and made it all about Kate again. Obviously, Kate was the character Picoult cared about, and IMHO, she shouldn't have written it so that Anna got emancipated; she should have had the judge side with the mother and do the transplant anyway. And all the mumbo-jumbo about "Anna had to die so I could live" was b.s. and, by that point, completely expected. Anna's out of the picture, Kate's healthy and everything goes back to the perfect family picture that the parents set out to have in the first place.

This book turned out to be a big disappointment at the end. I was captivated page by page enjoying how well established all the characters were. I loved how the author rolled from each person's point of view to reveal the overall story. At least I did until I got to the end. I literally kept flipping pages back and forth, CERTAIN that somehow my copy of this book was missing a chapter. Even after I finished it, I went back looking for a missing segment that somehow I could have overlooked. I felt built up and let down.
Definitely take the time to read the Q&A with the Author that's included at the end of book. I don't think it really answered my questions, but it helped me realize she intended this surprise ending. I still think it needed another chapter with SOME detail....but I am not an author, just another reader!

This book was way overrated. I feel the most for the characters of Anna and Jesse, and even the dad to some degree. The ending was a tragic shock and made me feel cheated. I so wanted Anna to become something other than tolerated by her family until she was needed yet again to save Kate's life. Anna is smart and funny and curious and deserved so much better than she got. The mother, Sara I felt was selfish and single minded. I am in a battle of my own with a serious medical situation, but I feel most of the time like I am living to make everyone else happy. I understood the position Kate was in and it isn't fun, or easy, or even wanted. But, as a mother, I would have probably done the same for Kate...WITHOUT neglecting Anna or Jesse. I just felt Sara played favorites and the other two got the short end of the stick. Ultimately, it seemed as though Sara, even with such a loss.....won somehow. Horrible.

While I liked this book, I don't think it was one of the best I have ever read. Although I didn't guess the ending exactly, the further I got into the book, the more obvious that something like that was going to happen. Still, it did not detract from the story, and I still wanted to keep reading to see if I was right. I enjoyed the story being told from various viewpoints, but at some spots I had a hard time discerning if they were talking about the present time, or a moment in the past.

This book was outstanding! Picoult did a great job of describing the family dynamic, especially when there's a sick child involved. This book brought up some controversial issues- medical ethics and organ donation. I couldn't put it down and I was so emotionally involved myself- Kate's mother just irritated me. I would highly recommend this.

If you've never read Picoult before, I highly recommend this book. She is an amazing author who writes in such a way that the characters become three-dimensional because you learn so much about them and the way that the chapters are laid out keeps you omniscient of events in the story. She manages to have two stories that become intertwined in this book as a result of one family's decision to go to extreme measures to save a daughter from cancer.
Sometimes, I wanted to feel sorry for Sara, the mother, but I just couldn't because it came down to her being a selfish person until it was too late. Though it's admirable she refuses to give up hope and accept inevitable death for one child, the pain she causes both daughters in order for Kate to live leads to a dramatic action by Anna. With Sara, it's always about what she wants in order to keep, who is obviously, her favorite child alive and so she ignores the true needs of all of them in order for herself to play the martyr.
The father, Brian, ends up being nearly as bad, though he has his moments of empathy with all his kids, in some of the decisions he makes in order to try to keep his family together. And the brother, Jesse, is almost understandable in the anger that he projects at having felt ignored and helpless though he expresses it in an awful way. As for the sisters, you can feel the love that they have for each other while at the same time wishing for a normal life.

This is an amazing book about the lengths a mother will go to for a very sick child and about a sister torn between love for and resentment toward her sister. Jodi Picoult somehow manages to get inside the feelings of the child's entire family and their struggle to find their place in light of the sickness of one member.

I could not put the book down as I had to keep reading to hear what was happening next. This book really makes you stop and think what you would do if you were in that position......

An interesting look into a topic I have rarely if ever heard about. Medical stories aren't usually in my stack, but this book came highly recommended. I like the author's style. However, the character of the oldest son seemed a little out of place, or unneeded. Some of the descriptions of medical procedures being done on the young girls made me tear up more than once and say, "Oh poor baby girl!" It reached me deeply on some levels and at other times seemed almost superficial and left me wondering why it was needed for the story. Overall worth a read.

Loved this book!!!! It's told from the point of view of several characters and chronicles the breakdown of a family going through the illness of one of the daughters. It dealt with complex moral issues how your decisions affect your future and the future of those you love, sometimes in ways that go against your best intentions . As a parent, I was fascinated by how the mother tried to do what she felt was best, but ultimately foresook her other two children's interests in her pursuit to save the older daughter at all costs. Makes you thankful that your children are healthy and that you don't have to wrestle with the issues this family did! Can't wait to see the movie!

My Sister's Keeper was one of the most heart wrenching stories I've ever read. Anna's sister, Kate, is dying of a rare form of leukemia. She was conceived as a genetic match for her sister to help save her life. It was supposed to be a one-time deal, but over the course of her 13 years, Anna has donated multiple times. Her sister is in need of a kidney and Ann's decided she's had enough of being told how to use her body. She decides to sue her parents for medical emancipation and refuses to give up her kidney. She knows the possible consequences of her actions, but she wants to be the one to make the choice, not her parents. What follows is a harrowing tale told in the view of six people affected by Anna's decision. I really can't say too much else without giving anything away, but this is a must read, albeit emotional one.

This is the first Jodi Picoult I read, and I was hooked. She has a way of drawing you in, and opening your heart to the pain of others. The same pain that sometimes makes them do horrible things. (not necessarily specific to this book) She will get you thinking about the other side of the story that you may have never considered.

Gosh...I really don't know what to say....I really loved the depth of the authors writing andvthis was such an emotional roller coaster for me...it was a fantastic book but I don't love to cry and this book brought me to jerking tears. This was my first book by Jodi picoult and wont be my last...just need to grab a box of tissues beforehand. Don't let me scare you away cause this was definitely a book worth reading.

I loved this books. I just finished it.
It was told from multiple points if view. These were- the mother, the father, the brother, the older sister, the younger sister, the attorney & the court appointed gaurdian.
The different perspectives, in my opinion, is what made this book smazing instead of merely a compassionate story. Being able to see from all points of view made the story whole in a way one point of view can't. It was a beautifully told story that actually rang true as if it really happened. I don't want to spoil by adding details from it but this was a truly great book. Imo by adding in things like the mystery of yhe lawyers ailment (which is mentioned in another review) it reminds us that real life is about everyone going through and dealing with different things. I really enjoyed all perspectives of the book.

In spite of being fiction it presents very current (and very real) issues of medical ethics,that ANYONE will find fascinating, even if not in the medical field.

While I found the writing quite good, the storyline was trite, some characters unbelieveable (Sara and the "magic"reunion between Campbell and Julia), and the ending atrocious. This is why I don't read pop fiction...I'd give it a 2/5 for the imagery and unique point of view in storytelling...

I was nicely surprised at how much I loved this book. I fought off sleep a number of nights just to get to the next chapter...and the next, and the next!
Jodi Picoult writes so hauntingly vivid, with characters that transcend the pages time and time again.
It was worth every page of text, and has an ending that really defies and defines everything. I highly recommended it!

I loved this book...right up until the end. And then I hated it. Without saying too much, (although it seems the ending has been given away in countless reviews) I will say that I felt this to be a major cop out, so that the author didn't have to really make a choice. It just ruined an otherwise great read. I am hesitant to read more of this author's works based on my experience with this one.

This was a great book. I though it was well written, just enough to keep you pulled in. I loved it. I have already passed it on to someone else.
This book was really well written -- in classic Jodi Piccolt style. She was, as she's done in other books, able to take a tough real-issue subject and write from all sides, showing us several points of view and making us unsure of what is the "right" decision. I laughed; I cried. It was emotional and thought provoking.

I became a Jodi Picoult fan because of this book and I feel that this book was by far her best. The story is written from the perspective of all the different chracters' points of views which seamlesslessly weaves together to create such a powerful story. Unlike Picoult's other books about the human condition, this one really made me think and from many different perspectives. I appreciated the author's message and continue to form opinions about the legal issues pertaining to the issues that the book brought forth.

This was one of the first Jodi Picoult novels I have read. I'm not going to lie--it's a real tearjerker and the moral dilemmas of this story is reeling. I guess I come from a generation where child rights were not even a thought or a topic in most people's minds. I can guarantee that after reading this novel, you just can't ignore that children don't have a lot of say of what happens to them and how adults can easily manipulate situations to make children believe it's for the better good.
The only thing I did not like about this novel were stories that just didn't fit. I couldn't put this down and think it is my favorite of the Picoult books. A couple has another child that is a genetic match to one of their children so she can be a donor to her. This child now sees this the only reason she exists and the story takes off from there. A great book for discussions!
A very good, moving story, and very well written. I liked how the author keeps switching the point of veiw, so the reader knows the thoughts and emotions of all the main characters. They all have very different perspectives on the events taking place, and it's very clever, the way it all comes together.

WOW....that is an understatement. This isn't what at all I expected, I thought within the first few chapters that I had the book figured out and I knew how it would turn out, boy was I wrong. I read this in one afternoon, I simply couldn't put the book down I was drawn in to the world of Anna and Kate with the ups and downs of life and illness. The bonds of this family are indescribile, it asks the questions we as a soicety don't want to when it comes to the well being and health of our children. I have always been a fan of Picoult's writing and this one was another great maybe her best to date!

Ah... this is the first Jodi Picoult book I ever read. I read it behind the counter at Books-A-Million and from there, I have bought and read (mostly multiple times) the rest of her books.
In re-reading her books, this one still stands out - it has the different voices of _Songs_... though it has a strict timeline which is pretty new. It has the courtroom formula, but it comes off as less like a formula in this one. The end, though I did remember it, still shocks - not with the force of the first time, but shocks nonetheless.

Wow, what a book this is. It was the first of Jodi Picoult's that I've read and it was wonderful!! The story is told to us through all of the characters in the book, giving us each person's perspective through their own words. It definitely made the story stand out and gave it great meaning. This one is on my top 10 list for sure!!

I found this book easy to read because of the short chapters, engaging because of the plot, and a page turner because of the various perspectives represented by each character. I really enjoy books where each chapter is in the point of view of different characters, and this book was well done. I found myself often disliking the mother, yet I could sometimes appreciate her goals when reading the flashbacks. It was an emotional read, and I was definitely bawling in the end.

This book is completely amazing. It was the book that sent me on the track of becoming a Doctor and really an inspiring book. The ending was shocking and I literally was bawling in the middle of a class. The book is also easily accessible and readable to just about anyone. It's about human sacrifice and what true sisterly (or family) love really means. No matter who you are, where you are I recommend this book to you.

I loved this novel. It was the first Jodi Picoult novel I read. I really found the basis for the book to be enthralling. I liked most of the characters, but I felt Sara's character fell a little flat. The ending was not something I ever saw coming, but nonetheless it really kept me thinking long after I had finished the last page and searching for more books by Picoult.

I like to compare and contrast books with the motion picture versions and this is definitely a case where the book outshines the movie. The ironic twist of fate at the end puts the entire story in perspective. The movie version's end made it too predictable. The author writes the story with both sensitivity and bluntness that keep the reader interested and questioning the rights of adulthood and authority.

This was my first book by Picoult. I definitely enjoyed it. I was able to put it down but was still anxious to see how the book developed and how it would end. I just finished reading this book and am still a little weepy. I stayed up late three nights, reading until my eyes burned and have no regrets about lost sleep. Jodi Picoult gives every member of the family their own voice and never waivers. Even without the names at the beginning of each chapter it would be easy to figure out which family member was speaking. Some people have complained about the multiple POVs but I would've liked to get a couple more, like the judge or Sara's sister. Very touching and heart-wrenching to watch Anna struggle to become her own person at the expense of her sister. Some parts dragged a bit and I skimmed to get back to the meat of the book but all in all a great read. I would recommend this book to friends and plan to mail in to a girlfriend as soon as possible.

OMGosh. Once I started this I couldn't put it down. Anna was born to be a donor for her dying sister, Kate. Anna doesn't want to be a donor anymore. You experience this story from all sides, each chapter written from a different point of view. It's not confusing - it's enlightening. It makes you wonder which is more important - our sense of self or our sense of responsibility to our famly and loved ones. And it makes you realize that you never know what is going on inside another persons head, no matter how well you think you know someone. Being a parent myself - I can't imagine how I would ever decide, if I had to choose between one child and the other. I'd probably say "Take Me" instead - but funny how life doesn't give us the options that make decisions easy. This book is an experience, and will open up many questions in your mind.

This book is really a wonderful glace at the kind of choices a parent / family face's occasionally, when you have so much going on in every direction with a serious illness. This book defintely re-assured me that our family has done a wonderful job, coping with our own daughter's illness's , and having our 3 other children as well. My own daughter has passed away just over 10 monthes ago , and this book has helped me to know I did thing's right by her. This book was very hard to read but very theraputic for me as well, just as I hoped.

I've always been a fan of Jodi Picoult's ability to take a current event or moral question and handle it with such finesse. She doesn't disappoint with My Sister's Keeper, the story of a young girl named Anna who was created - literally - to be a perfect genetic match for her sister, who is battling one bout of cancer after another. After suffering through many procedures right by her sister's side, Anna finally and inexplicably puts her foot down and refuses to give her sister a life-saving kidney transplant. The legal questions abound: Does Anna have the right to refuse? The moral questions are even worse: Does Anna have the right to make her own decision, even if it means tearing her family apart? The outcome of the legal and moral situation isn't nearly as shocking as the final pages of the book, where Picoult takes a turn I never saw coming.
As a mother, this book pulled me in many different directions. As a sister, it made me question that I would do if, God forbid, I was ever asked to give as much as Anna had. When I reached the end of the book, I had a good cry. This is book worth reading.

My first Picoult book. Loved it! It caused me to started getting all her books and I found the next one to be a disappointment compared to this one. This books keeps you engrossed, has you rooting for some of the characters and seething over others. Yet again, this book is very well crafted but I didn't fully connect to the characters. Maybe because I waited so long to read it, it also seemed quite a bit predictable. I'm sure hearing what a tear jerker it is set me up to remain a little detached while reading. The closest I came to tearing up was the epilogue, but the tears never fell. I'm at a bit of a loss with this author. Obviously, she takes her craft seriously and I respect that. But, I'm just missing out on the emotional ride she's trying to take me on. I don't mind the multiple voices or the dramatic twists at the end. However, I hate that I'm not emotionally invested enough to truly care what happens to any of the main characters. At the very end, I'm more concerned about how the lawyer and his dog turn out than anyone and that's not what I should feel. I think I'm going to take a break from trying to read any more of her books right now. Oh well. :(

I would not reccomend this book to anyone who was going through a medical trauma with a child though . It was an awesome story . but I would have liked to see the brothers charecter explored a little more .

She really gets into the minds of all involved. The ending, like all Picoult books, has a twist and i was left with a lump in my throat long after the book was done. This was my FIRST Jodi Picoult book, found luckily in a used bookstore...I was afraid of getting into a "hyped author" but this book was absolutley great (and i am now a JP fan)...such a good story about a girl whose sole purpose in life (choice not hers) is to keep her sick sister alive. I love how each chapter was in a different character's voice....the end will blow you away!

This was a very well written book and the Jodi Picoult did a great job writing from the point of view of the different characters. She switched which character was "speaking" every chapter. It touched on a lot of different emotions and although I was more towards one side throughout the whole book, I found myself able to relate with the opposition and see where they were coming from as well. My only complaint is that the ending was terrible. I won't spoil it by saying exactly what happens but I found myself very let down. I had been planning to see the movie after reading the book, but that ending spoiled it. Since then I have heard that the ending of the book is quite different from the ending of the movie. I am usually annoyed by this, but I think in this case it actually makes me consider seeing the movie

I am not a reader that often cries while reading a novel, but the book, "My Sister's Keeper", had me almost weeping. I found myself becoming very involved with each character, as if this were family. Having had a sick child I did identify with the parents, although in comparison, my child's illness was curable, but nonetheless, it does, tear apart a family. This book was amazing, and I look forward to reading another Jodi Picolt novel.

It doesn't take a lot of concentration but still holds one's attention. This book, like most of hers, really make you think about what you might do in the position of the characters and feel for them all whether you agree with them or not. I also love an author who isn't afraid to throw in a curve ball for the last chapter. Highly recommended!

This was an amazing book. I loved that you could see the perspective of each character and really get to feel the motivations behind their actions. Each character grows through the book and with each glimpse into their thoughts, you are allowed a little further in. This book really touches on difficult issues and you really understand each side and it is difficult to decide what you would do in each of their shoes.

This was the first book by Ms. Picoult that I read, and it was fabulous! Not what I expected at all, with a many layered view into the dynamics of a family in a very unusual situation. The conclusion of the story took me totally by surprise, while at the same time left me with a feeling of satisfaction. Great book!

This book is amazingly well written. I usually find that I guess the ending half way through a book but with this one you never knew what was coming and the ending was a complete surprise. Make sure you have the kleenex at the ready as throughout the book you'll find the tears flowing. An absolute must read book, I literally could not put it down.

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting because I could not put it down. The premise is heartbreaking from the first page - parents decide to have a baby who will genetically match their sick daughter so she can get a much needed cancer treatments.
At 13, the younger daughter is finally pushed to the breaking point when she finds out she must undergo yet another proceedure to help keep her 16 year old sister alive. She hires a lawyer so she can sue her parents for medical independence.
The book alternates through the viewpoints of everyone involved - the family members, the lawyer, and the family advocate. No one is happy and secrets come out as the case goes to trial.
I thought this book was beautifully written. I cried throughout and the ending is amazing. What would have been a convenient plot device in another author's hands becomes perfection in Picoult's writing.
Have tissues near by and enjoy!

The Audio Book version of this book is very entertaining as it uses a full cast - every character is voiced by a different actor - Anna, Sarah, Julia, Campbell, Brian - all fully fleshed out. So many reviews have discussed the plotline that I don't need to go over it again. Some people like the ending and some think it ruins the story.
Unfortunately, I was listening to the ending of this book while on my way to work and arrived in tears. If you think that it's sad reading, it's much more devastating hearing the last few chapters read aloud.

My advice on reading this book is to stop five chapters before the end. Up until then, it shapes up to be a pretty good story, maybe a little long-winded and slow-paced in the beginning, but with interesting and engaging characters and some actual drama outside of the main plot, all of which comes together quite nicely . . . as I said, five chapters from the end.

Oh My Goodness!!!!!!! Just finished this book. WOW! I was caught up in this book from the first page to the last. Picoult develops the characters so well in this book that you feel as if you know the family.
This book had all the elements that make Jodi Picoult one of the best modern author: an engrossing controversial story with an ending you'll never see coming. What made me like this book better than the other Picoult books I read was that the teenagers were as morally devoid as they have been in other books.

My Sister's Keeper follows the emotional story of a family that has one daughter stricken with a very serious rare form of leukemia and the daughter that they genetically matched to be her donor. They also have the eldest son Jesse who is a rebel without a cause and the heart breaking core issue of, just how much is too much to ask a Sister to do?
In My Sister's Keeper we are forced to look at some serious and emotional issues is it right to genetically have a child to be another ones spare parts? It truly brings out the old English saying of an Heir and a Spare. Does that mean you love the child who is the donor any less? Does it mean that they should always feel obligated to give, give and give? Who is the selfish one the child who keeps getting or the child who no longer wishes to give? And can you yourself honestly answer any of these questions yourself in Black and white.
The writing in this book is amazing; it pulls you into the story so that you can see the pieces fitting together. I can honestly see why this book was made into a movie, the storytelling is painted so well and so vivid you can't help but seeing it as a reel of movie film in your head. I was a little annoyed by the ending - but the subject matter of this book fascinated me and it was a great read. I blew through it really quickly...I knocked it out in a weekend.
I THOUGHT I knew generally what this book was about, but was in for a few surprises. The ending absolutely brought me to unexpected tears! The book is an easy read and I loved the author's writing style so much that I immediately ordered (thru PBS, of course) another book by Picoult. Highly recommend this book!

As a mother, I could see myself in the mother's shoes, doing whatever she could to save one of her daughters, even have another child to do that. But Jodi Picoult does an excellent job of showing the other side of that issue, from the perspective of the child born to save the sick child. After reading this book, it made me examine how I parent now and what would I do in that situation.

This is my first Jodi Picoult book and chose to read it mostly due to the upcoming movie release. I did find this book very engaging. I like how you get the perspective of each character and delve into their histories to get a better understanding of where they are currently. I do agree with another review that there was quite a bit of time spent on the relationship between the lawyer and his ex and added very little to the plot. Not much time was spent on the brother and I would've liked to get to know his character more. Altogether, it was a page-turner for me and, being a mother myself, found myself emotionally involved.
This is a rivetting story of a difficult choice made by one sister. A story about a sister's love. A story about a sister's freedom to be herself. A story that you will not be able to lay down until you have finished reading it!

Really engaging story about a thirteen-year-old girl who was conceived in order to help her sister survive leukemia. She sues her parents for medical emancipation, which her mother says is signing her sister's death certificate. The twists in the story catch you completely off-guard. I have attention problems and yet I was throughly focused throughout this book, reading it in under 2 weeks(unheard of for me). I highly recommend this book. It is not just "chick-lit" either. It is about a highly-controversial topic that makes you ask yourself the question of 'What would I do'?

Wow! This is the first book I have read by Jodi Picoult and I was very impressed! I will be reading many more. This was one of the most thought provoking books I have read, it kept my attention from the beginning and I never wanted to put it down! The ending was very surprising.
I found this to be a difficult novel to read, both because of Kates illness and the situation that Anna finds herself in. Ive seen the movie, so I kind of knew the story already, and it was still a very sad book. I found myself asking, over and over, what would I do in this situation?

I read this 418 page book in one day, during a fibro flare. It was an emotional and thought provoking work, leading to a beautiful and bittersweet ending. This is one of the best books I've ever read. I highly recommend this to anyone who has some heartstrings that need tugged or wants to make use of a rainy day in bed.
This was my first Jodi Picoult, and I found this book very hard to put down. The story kept me thinking (much to the chagrin of my husband who had to deal with me posing the questions going through my head) about the ethical issues presented by modern science and by the idea of "who do you choose" when it comes to the well-being of your children? The story is about Anna, a 13 year old girl who hires a lawyer, Campbell Alexander, to sue her parents for medical emancipation. What is her motivation for doing this? She was essentially genetically engineered to be a donor for her older sister, Kate, who is suffering from a rare form of leukemia. At birth, Anna donated her cord blood, and later on she kept having to donate blood, bone marrow, etc., to help prolong her sister's life. She was never asked, it was just expected of her and it resulted in her not having a normal childhood- example, she couldn't go to a hockey camp because she would be away from her sister for too long. Now, she is put in a situation where her sister needs a kidney, and her mother wants Anna to donate hers since, due to Kate's illness, can't come from a regular donor. Anna loves her sister, they are best friends, but this decision is something that is truly difficult for both of them because they want different things.
Also caught up in this whole mess is Jesse, their older brother who is forgotten in the medical shuffle and finds other ways of expressing himself & releasing his anger, their firefighter dad who is so used to saving lives but can't save Kate and wonders if Anna might be right to bring this case to trial, and Julia, Anna's court appointed guardian, who needs to figure out what's best for Anna, but can't even figure out what's best for herself because Campbell was the guy who broke her heart in high school. Contemporary Medical/ Legal tale by Jodi Picoult. I've been wanting try a book by this author, and as a Medical Social Worker, I was intrigued by this storyline: Parents of a terminally ill child successfully plan to have a child who is genetically compatible with their sick child. What would that child's life be like? Anna is expected to donate marrow, platelets..whatever her beloved older sister needs. Anna's whole life is defined by what she can do for her sister. This book is compelling, extremely well written, intriguing. I read it in one day. This is an incredible book. And, I hate it. It's going to be a long time before I am brave enough to read another by Picoult.
While I found the writing quite good, the storyline was trite, some characters unbelieveable (Sara and the "magic" reunion between Campbell and Julia), and the ending atrocious. This is why I don't read pop fiction...I'd give it a 2/5 for the imagery and unique point of view in storytelling...

Picoult takes what could easily become a six-hanky Hallmark Movie of the Week and manages to create a powerful and heartbreaking story about a family shattering from the strains of caring for a terminally ill child, and sets it against a subplot involving an attorney who has decisions of his own to make.
My daughter read this for a school summer reading project. She really liked it and had a few tears to prove it.

A good read about family dynamics, especially when illness is in the mix. It is a book that brings into the conversation the struggles that families and people in general have to go through to balance what's right for one person versus the whole family. A true moral challenge. I found it a little hard to get into at first (even put the book down for a couple of months and then went back to it), and it was sometimes hard to follow with the story skipping around to the different characters, but I eventually got into it and enjoyed the story. It was interesting to see the different perspectives of the different charactors. Overall, I liked this book, the story was well told and I would recomend it to anyone who is interested in the study of people and families... A good read.
This was a book of firsts for me. The first I've read by this writer, the first that I've wanted to write a letter to the author, the first that has made me want to read everything this woman has ever written. And the first book that I've ever written a review on.
I loved this book, it is fast moving, gut wrenching, it will make you think about your own values. There is not one character in this book that I don't identify with on some level. This could be a story about anyone's family. But thank God not your's or mine.

I could not put this one down. The constant battle for independence for both sisters was brillantly displayed. And then the ending pulled everything together even though it was unexpected.
This was an amazing book... I was really surprised with how it ended, but it was fitting. Be sure to keep a box of kleenex around!
Much better than the new movie. Jodi Picoult succeeded again.

The book as a whole works quite well. By changing the perspective every chapter the reader is allowed a full profile of the entire story. By employing this device Picoult allows you as the reader to be completely entrenched in the plotline.
All of the characters are believable but Sara who is the mother never is able to connect with me. I don't know if that was by design but it was disappointing that such a pivotal character never had an impact on me as the reader.
Picoult is the standard bearer for contemporary fiction today. She is the suthor of this generation.
Many consider "My Sister's Keeper" as the definitive Picoult novel. I disagree. This book is a wonderful read and I highly reccomend it. However, I think Picoult's "Nineteen Minutes" is her best work.

I saw the movie before I read the book (Something I rarely ever do) I was extremely impressed with the movie, it was riveting and emotional. I loved it. I started to read the book, and even though i feel like I had to push myself to get through some parts, i kept reading. The last 40 or so pages, were incredible. Mostly being the last 10 pages were as emotional as it gets. And after I cried, I got angry. How could they change the ending like that? (Excuse me if you have not read the book yet. i won't say how the endings differ). Changing small plot lines is one thing, but this was major And it royally ticked me off! The book ending had so much passion, meaning, feel to it. It was amazing. I just couldn't believe Jodi Picoult let them do that to the ending. Given, I was completely impressed with the book - I loved it. But, I'm still really ticked about them changing the ending because this ending was a thousand times better.
I have a love/hate relationship with this book. First, the way the book is formatted kind of makes it confusing. Each chapter is from the perspective of a character and some chapters are real short, others are long. This makes the book choppy in areas and I feel like it disrupts some important parts.
Second, I have a problem with Anna's parents. I can somewhat understand where they are coming from but when their daughter is born as a "spare parts baby" it turned me off.
The ending really shocked me. I was not expecting it. Overall it's a decent read. I wish I would have read the book a long time ago before the movie came out.

I think that with all the hype behind this book, my expectations were higher than they should have been. It took me quite a while to get into this book. I forced myself to continue reading it because I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie so that I could compare the two. I have to say that once I got over halfway into the book I did not want to put it down. Now it is time to see the movie.....
I thought this book was very good but I think it would have been better for me if I had not heard so many people rave about it. My expectations are always too high when people do that.
A gripping story. A fictional page-turner that address controversial issues. This is a beautiful, heartbreaking, controversial, and honest story. I like this story a lot and gave it a 4.5! This story has been made into a movie and now in theaters.
What a surprise. I saw the movie and enjoyed it and expected the same book. If you saw the movie, you will be totally surprised by the actual book. It's excellent and worth a second look. As usual Jodi Picoult does not disappoint.

Presented here is a girl (Anna), who is in a dramatic situation. She is a perfect match to be a donor to her sick of leukemia sister. Anna decides to fight for their rights- the right to make her own decisions on the disposal of her body. It is not easy, because Anna is a child who is torn between her own harm, and the love of parents and siblings. Anna is the hero of ancient tragedy- whatever she chooses it will be bad ... Very touching and captivating novel.

This is the second book I have read by Jodi Picoult (Second Glance was the first), and I think I comprehend the Jodi PiCULT now, another PHENOMENAL book. I'm ready to read everything she has written lol... This book was divided into chapters by which character's voice she was writing in. The book flew because you felt like you we hearing a bunch of different conversations about the unenviably difficult challenge that faced this family, a child with cancer; but so much more... HIGHLY recommend!

I just had to have this so i bought a copy and snuggled down to what i knew would be a great read and was not dissappointed--it was fantastic. I have loved Ms Picoult's way with words since my first book of hers. Then i had a friend come over who had just read this novel and put it in my hands and say--"you have to read this book", i chuckled and told her i had already read it. She also liked it enough to refer it to someone else. I think if you like heartfelt stories you will enjoy this one. It is a bit of tears, alot of heart, and a beautiful story.

FANTASTIC! I loved every single page of this book. I loved the style, the format, the content. The author allowed me to capture every characters' thoughts and personalities with ease. The story line was so compelling, and might I add....the ending: WOW. Just, wow! I will force this book upon all of my relatives, it is too good to not be read by everyone.
This is a long one (over 300 pages), but I read it in about a day and a half. Very well written, very fast paced, and a tear-jerker throughout. Absolutely wonderful.

This book was so much better than the movie. Details that were glossed over on the screen were spelled out in details here. I did't want to put it down and the ending broke my heart! This book stayed pretty vivid in my mind for several days after reading it....there is so much that people take for granted and this book should tell all who reads it that no one knows the exact day or time they will die. Make sure you live everyday to the fullest. Really live your life!

Jodi Picoult has a gift to be able to describe the human condition. This book was enthralling. The characters were likeable to the point you were worried about them. The situation felt real. I am a cancer survivor and could identify, and being a mother made my heart break a few times. I have never seen the movie so all i know is this book and it was outstanding as is all her books.

This was an incredibly moving story, with characters that were very real and heart-felt. I cried several times. Though I thought I would have difficulty with the story as I have children of my own, I acutally found myself feeling very blessed. Heart-wrenching with an uplifting ending.

With one daughter sick with lukemia and another daughter as her perfect match donor this family has alot to handle, then throw in a troubled older brother, and a love story between 2 smaller characters & you've got one heck of a story! What a great idea for a story - and it could have been done so much better. Parts of this book were well done. I liked the different points of view, and liked the way this was visually indicated with different typefaces. However, we don't get to read the point of view of one character until very late in the story, and this kept me from connecting with her. Picoult does write well, she has the ability to craft some fine imagery. Sometimes this results in younger characters coming off as precocious, as sounding way too sophisticated for their ages.

Encountering the person you fell in love with as a teenager and having those same feelings 10 or 15 years after the fact? So trite. I don't want to spoil things for you so I won't. Just be aware.

An emotionally charged account of one family's moral struggle between saving one child and losing another. When a verdict is reached, it seems that everything fits together too nicely. Every single character in the book is awarded exactly what they want, either from a judge's decision or a rather fortunate twist of fate. Until the surprise twist at the end which leaves everyone's lives in shambles.

Controversy and heartbreak surrounding a child that believes she was "bred" to be a donor and life-saver for her sister. Picoult does a fantastic job of storytelling once again. The story bounces around from different characters perspectives, which normally I don't like but Picoult's style of doing this in her books really adds to the telling of the tale. You learn to like and dislike characters not only from what unfolds in the story but how you learn of them through their point of view.

I thought this book was well written and totally kept my interest. I really enjoyed the plot and all the characters, though I thought the love story between Campbell and Julia was unnecessary. I loved how the author jumped from each character and gave them their points of view of the storyline, but thought how it ended was very predictable and unbelievable. It was a good story and I'm glad I read it, just didn't care for the ending.

This book was fantastic! I never cry at books or movies, but this book had me in tears. It is a great page-turner, and I almost never put it down until I finished it. I am psyched to see the movie!

This is the second Jodi Picoult book that I have ever read. I enjoy her writing style and how she shows many peoples points of view. However this story was just ok to me. I hated the mother and the older brother. The ending I was very surprised at though. All in all the book did not live up to my expectations.

Probably the most tear jerking book I've read in a while. Imagine growing up knowing you were born as a "spare". Born to save the life of your sister. But trying to find her own life in the process takes her family down a road no parent wishes to tread. A coming of age story every parent should read.
My impression of the book summed up in one sentence: "The mother got everything she ever acted like she wanted and I hope it destroyed her."

This is the best of all of Jodi Piccoult's books. I highly recommend this book. Especially if you have seen the movie. The book is 10 times better.
I was not a fan of this book. I expected this to be interesting and heartfelt. But, in reality, I found the mother incredibly creepy. I mean, if I were her kid, I'd have sued for emancipation at age 5! On top of that, the ending was terribly done. I know this is fiction ... but, even in fiction, there should be a realistic continuity. The ending was so contrived, so unrealistic, and just terribly done all over. I honestly don't understand the hype surrounding this book.

Really well written book about a family that seems believable, coping the best they can with a bad situation. The ending hits like a ton of bricks. The whole premise of the book really makes you think about the moral implications of some of the scientific advances we have today.

This was one one of the most empowering and sad books I have ever read. Jodi Picoult is a master at bringing forth all the characters emotions in such a way that you are sure to feel them. She also writes in such a way as it seem like everything could have actually happened. I haven't got to see the movie yet but I do hope it wont be a let down after reading this wonderful book. I have ordered a couple more from her in hopes that they will be so good.

I would say I so-so like this book up to the ending. I found the ending very sad and bleak. I really felt sorry for Ana character and felt the ending did no justice to her. This is an amazing book! It was the first that I read by her and I was completely blown away by her incredible talent. I have read many by her since and while I have never been disappointed - she is truly gifted - this one possesses a little something not found in her other books. She writes books that make you suffer for the ending, but you absolutely can't quit reading her. One time I went to a used book store and bought about five of her books and read until I had gone through the whole stack(I did still take care of my kids though). I wonder if there's a twelve step program for books.

GREAT!! Loved the morality aspect and the child's eye view. The cranky attorney was great as I too have a service dog and feel his frustration with the stares and whispers and akward questions. They were quite a pair, the child and her attorney, two who just didn't quite fit. Compounded with a great ending! Excellent for a book club reader!

This was a really incredible book. I loved every minute of it.
The book was pretty good until the ending which felt like a cop out. It just didn't deal with the issues it promised to deal with and it took the easy way out for the sake of manipulating the reader.
I loved the author's style and the surprise ending. I think I have found a new author. Running to look for more of her books now.

It is Lulene McDaniels all grown up. If cancer, depression, death are what you want to read about, this book is for you. A good sad wallow in misery. I read half and felt emotionally manipulated, but a lot of my friends thought it was wonderful.

This book was excellent. Really easy read and my only critique was it was slightly too easy at time. I was really moved by the story and the characters were perfectly developed. Read thisbook if you are in the mood for a good cry.

This is a tear-jerker. The topic is timely (a young girl was conceived specifically for the genetic match of her bone marrow). In the end, however, this is "chic lit". So, if you like to cry over your stories, this one's for you.

This was a wonderful book. I enjoyed being allowed the different perspectives of each character, and being able to sympathize with each of them. The end came as a shock though!

A poignant story and one that makes you really care about ALL the characters and their individual thoughts and feelings !! As usual Jodi Picoult has taken a timely and controversial topic and written a beautiful novel that makes the reader think deeply about it for weeks afterward!!
From the moment I started reading I was totaly committed. I was there in the lives of the characters. Joy even in this hard place where what's happening just shouldn't be happening, but is. Nothing really helps or heals, and this story takes you to the sharp edges of the lives we lead and in it connects us. Lovingly written.

All the characters were compelling and the premise is timely. It is well written and I would highly recommend it.
This book was recommended to me by a co-worker, was a little apprehensive to order and read it, glad I did, I truly enjoyed how Jodi Picoult started each chapter through all the characters eyes, so there wasn't one persons point of view throughout the book. I really made you think, and ask, what would you do, if you were any of these people. It's a good book!

This is a sad, but most sensitive book about the current moral issues around genetic engineering, stem cell controversy, etc. The author is skillful in presenting the emotional positions of different characters, with some twists at the end. I was not sure I'd like it in the beginning, but ended up thoroughly enjoying it. Lots to think about!
While I found the writing quite good, the storyline was trite, some characters unbelieveable (Sara and the "magic"reunion between Campbell and Julia), and the ending atrocious. This is why I don't read pop fiction...I'd give it a 2/5 for the imagery and unique point of view in storytelling...

Excellent! Controversial! I have contemplated posting this book because of the subject matter. It is a great book, but I warn anyone who reads this because it will keep you up at night wondering if you had a child with a terminal illness if you would create a 'perfect' child to save your ill one.

Man...I don't know if I have ever read a book that made me think more. While this book does bring up ethical questions in parenting it also talks about designer babies, and how far you'd go to keep your child alive. LOVED IT!!

This is a good book. Really, it focuses on a very difficult issue. When parents learn that their daughter has cancer, they decide to conceive another child to be a perfect genetic match to help save her life. Except, the moral issues raised are enormous. Exactly how far should one sibling be expected to go to save their sister? How many procedures? How much pain? And, what if one day they decide they don't want to do it anymore? Whose decision is it to make?

Excellent novel dealing with a real-world situation. Because of the circumstances, I was back and forth with my emotions. Very powerful book.

I have to say that this is probably the best book I've ever read. It was awesome. It's told from several persons points of view so you kinda get a idea of how all of the characters are feeling instead of just one. And it's a very touchy subject in general. It really touches your heart in more ways than one. And it really makes you think. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in genetics or contraversial stuff. Or even just to a parent or person who wants a touching read.

This is a great book. It really brings the meaning of what a cancer family has to deal with, and how a child in that family feels. It is moving and inspiring to treasure the moments you have. By far one of my favorite books I've read in a long time.
I liked this book a lot - have wondered about the ethics of kids donating organs, etc. Covered both sides of the dilemma really well.

Picoult explores the family dynamics, the legalities, the morality and the immorality, with an engaging and all too human cast of characters - and the end will blow you away.

This book wasn't too bad as these popular, featuring-a-reader's-club-guide-in-the-back books go. I found the characters sympathetic, the plot interesting and acceptably unpredictable. The ending seemed pretty unbelievable to me, but that's my only major complaint. If you like Picoult or other Oprah-y books, you'll probably like this one.

As much as I liked the theme of the novel, and the emotional roller-coaster that its reading provides; I was not impressed with the writing style or the lack of artistry of the writer. It was however, an interesting read because of the questions it raises.

Typical Jodi Picoult. The story is depressing but I couldn't put it down.

Jodi Picoult's books are very easy to read. She draws you into each of her characters and you begin to think you can see the 'issue' from the side of all characters. This one will break your heart, it's not a book you want to put down too often. A quick read.

I thought the topic of the book was controversial and lead to a great book group discussion. But, I thought the book was pretty poorly written
This story makes your heart hurt! It is not a cheerful book, pretty much from beginning to end, but none of her's ever are. The moral dilemma is an interesting one, but wish it had been written with a more hopeful point of view (would have been great if a Christian author had written it). It begins with very little hope and ends that way; as well.
Kept you guessing till the very end....

An amazing book; a definite must read!
This was my first try with a new author. I've never heard of her before though she is acknowledged as âthe New York Times bestselling authorâ on the book itself. I will probably read another by her again but I think it might be a little bit before I try it. If all of her books are as emotionally charged as this one I'm going to need some recovery time. I will say that it was a page turner for me though; I read it in two nights at work.
The premise of this novel is that thirteen year old Anna has a sixteen year old sister, Kate, and Kate suffers from a rare form of leukemia. Anna can rattle off medical terms and procedures faster than most medical experts; not surprising since she's been the donor for Kate's numerous life-sustaining treatments since Anna was born. In fact, Anna was conceived as a perfect donor match for Kate--her first donation was the placenta, rich in stem cells. Now, Kate is in late stage renal failure and Anna is taking her parents to court for the right to make decisions about her own medical treatments.
I loved the turns this book takes at the end though I would have preferred a different ending. I never saw either of the main twists at the end coming though one of them I should have. The last one hit me out of left field though once I started reading it I knew what was coming.
Picoult does a good job using alternate viewpoints to portray each member of the family, the lawyer Anna retains and the guardian ad litem appointed to her, as richly drawn characters. I was impressed by Picoult's ability to manage lots of minute details in what was already a fairly complex story. Each of these characters that tell their story gives some insight into what is going on in this family's world or into the motivations of the characters. At times, the alternate viewpoints pick up right where the previous left off, showing us the scene from another's point of view; at other times the action moves some other place, showing us that the world continues on for others even as Kate and Anna's world is spiraling around them. This management of detail adds to the story for me, by giving us glimpses into why the son acts out, into the lawyer's past, into how the decisions were made for Kate and subsequently for Anna. Not all of the story centers around the child who is sick and the child who is well but might as easily be sick given how often she sees the inside of a hospital yet even the parts that don't contain bits of information about them add to the story in complex ways.
And that is perhaps the true gift of this book, that it intertwines the complex with the simple, the past with the present, the moral with the just. Reading I could understand why the decisions that were made were made but I could also see how one child seemed to be invisible to her parents because of the sicker child.
All in all I give this book a good rating but I warn you, it's a tear jerker. I also don't recommend reading it in public, least of all at work where people can see you crying your eyes out.

I couldn't get through it...too much sick child, made me too sad.
If I were to compare this book in quality and depth to any other, it would be Sebolds The Lovely Bones. This book was amazing and I had to go out and buy more of her books after I read it. I had never even heard of her before this. She is an amazing writer and this is the kind of book you will stay up through the night for. She takes you on a ride I think every reader should experience at least once, and it leaves you wondering about your own life and family because this book is based on a true story.

I read this book years ago and recommend it to anyone I can. It is in my list of top 5 all time favorite books. Unfortunately, it was the first Jodi Picoult book I read and none of her others (and she's had some really good ones and really bad ones) have lived up to this book.

In no way will I give away the ending of the book which is by far the best ending to a book I have ever read. I literally had tears running down my face. Which leads me to my soap box and the movie of the same name - I was so mad when I left the theater and in awe that Picoult would allow the ending to be changed to the predictable ending that the movie-makers ended the movie with. Read the book - it puts the movie to shame!

My Sister's Keeper changes viewpoints with each chapter. Since I wasn't a fan of the mom, whenever the mom's chapter rolled around I would find myself hesitant to read it. Jodi Picoult obviously writes this way for a reason; she wants the reader to empathize with all of her characters.

What a timely novel about hard choices and what it means to be a family. I really enjoyed this novel and appreciated all the different characters' viewpoints. I've read other books by this author and have enjoyed them, too.
Eh, it was okay. I didn't like that every chapter was from a different POV. It was distracting. Perhaps if it had been split in two, and written from the POV from each sister, I could have grown more attachment for the charaters. This was my first Jodi Picoult book. I found it to be one-dementional and predictable. Also, as a mother of three of my own children, I found it to be a tad unrealistic, except for a most extream and rare personality.
I think I will choose something more challenging and with more suspense the next go around. :/

This was a good story that went off the edge into an R rating. I would have liked to share it with my young teen daughter expect that it had to indulge into the graphic trash so prominent in our culture today.
I loved the controversey in this book. A great read. Every parent and sibling should read it. Makes you read feel for all the characters.

Anna is a "designer baby", bred rather than conceived, in order to be a perfect genetic match for her sister, Kate. Kate has leukemia, an aggressive type that threatens her life at every turn. For her entire life, literally from her birth until the age of thirteen, Anna is subjected to painful medical procedures in order to once again prolong her sister's life. Then she files a lawsuit to become medically emancipated in order to have a choice on whether or not she wishes to donate anything at all, even though that choice may ultimately kill her sister.
This is an excellent book. The reader becomes involved with each of the characters, who narrate their own perspectives on Anna's case. If you have seen the movie, you must read the book. Even if you haven't seen the movie, the book is so much better and has a completely different ending. The movie was well acted and had a great story, but the book will leave you breathless.

This novel had a great premise, and that combined with the cover image led me to hope for a dreamy, thinky, Kazuo Ishiguro kind of novel. Unfortunately, once I got in I realized it was a lot more nitty-gritty family drama than I wanted. Instead of exploring the inner life of the main character, Anna, we end up learning about everyone involved, including the lawyer who rekindles a decades-old romance with his college love. See what I mean?
Just as the author is not responsible for the better-than-the book cover, I am hoping she is not responsible for the choice to present each character's first-person narrative in a different font. I felt that decision was WAY too cute for a grown-up novel. Ugh!
Picoult is 100% responsible for her characters' voices, however, and this is where the novel slipped for me. I felt that the characters weren't distinct enough from each other -- everyone had great one-liners and amazing heartfelt insights. I think the story would have been better served if Picoult had stuck to one or, at most, two characters' stories and boiled the book down to its essentials. I don't think the plotline about the neglected troubled son added anything, for example. Don't even get me started on the romance.
Is this a trend now, where every character, no matter how incidental, gets to tell his or her story? I think Picoult should have trusted herself to tell everyone's story through Anna's, just as the publisher should have trusted us to remember whose story we were reading even if they were all in the same font.
In the end, I felt it could have been a much stronger book, but I didn't regret reading it. The story is a good one, at least up until the end, and unlike most negative reviewers, I thought Picoult did a good job of making the mother a sympathetic character. I didn't think she was a monster for pulling resources from one child to keep another alive, and I didn't find that part of the story unbelievably awful. [Even if it were, it wouldn't condemn the book for me, since unbelievably awful people can be interesting too.]
Aaaaaaaand then there's the ending. First, it was a betrayal of the challenge of the book, which was to tease out the moral path to the right decision for Anna and Kate. Second, it was a betrayal of the characters, who worked so hard to find the best answer only to have one arbitrarily thrust upon them by chance. Finally, to me it seemed to reveal what Picoult really wanted when she sat down to write this book: to save her characters from risking making the wrong choice by pulling that choice away from them at the last moment. I felt like she never really had them at play in this drama at all. When push came to shove, she just picked up all her pieces and went home. Because apparently she feels that having to deal with problems you didn't cause is preferable to making your own difficult but honest choices in life? I can't believe how awful that plot twist was, not just for her characters and readers but for her whole approach to moral problems. The message of this book seemed to be, "Try your best but hope for a catastrophic event so you never really have to make a decision." Not good enough.
I would not recommend this book.
