Man Booker Prize |

Category: Literary Fiction This literary prize is given in October of each year to a contemporary fiction writer hailing from the British Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland. The winner is the best original full-length novel, written in English. The prize was first awarded in 1969 to encourage the wider reading of the very best fiction across the UK and the Commonwealth. The Man Booker Prize is sponsored by Man Group plc, an alternative investment management business. |

Women's Prize for Fiction |

Categories: Literary Fiction, Mystery Formerly known as The Orange Prize for Fiction, which was created in 1995, the Women's Prize for Fiction celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women’s writing throughout the world. The winner of the best novel in English written by a woman receives a cheque for £30,000 and a limited edition bronze known as a ‘Bessie’, created and donated by the artist Grizel Niven. Both are anonymously endowed. The award is judged solely by women and awarded in June of each year. It was created during a time when it was felt that the considerable achievements of women novelists were often passed over by the major literary prizes. |

Newbery Medal Award |

Category: Children's Books The first children's literary award in the world. The Newbery Medal Award was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. The Newbery Medal is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The medal is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The award is announced in January and has been given annually since 1922. |

National Book Award |

Categories: Poetry, Young Reader's Literature, General Nonfiction, Literary Fiction The National Book Awards were first awarded in 1950 by a consortium of American book publishers. The mission of the nonprofit National Book Foundation, which now oversees the awards, is to “celebrate the best of American literature, expand its audience, and to enhance cultural value of good writing in America”. The awards are presented each Fall in 4 genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry and young people’s literature. Winners receive a $10,000 cash prize and a crystal sculpture. |

Caldecott Medal |

Category: Children's Books The Association for Library Service to Children annually awards the Caldecott Medal to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book for children. This award was first given in 1938, and is named for the famous nineteenth century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. The scene on the face of the bronze medal is from Caldecott’s illustration for The Diverting Story of John Gilpin, in which Gilpin is astride a runaway horse. “Runners up” or Honor books are awarded the Caldecott Honors citation. |

Michael L. Printz Award |

Categories: Children's Books, Young Reader's Literature The Michael L. Printz award highlights works of literary excellence that are written for young adults. The relatively new award, named after a Topeka, Kansas high school librarian, was first presented in July, 1999. Mr. Printz was an active member of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), and dedicated his life to making sure his students had access to good literature. The award is sponsored by Booklist, a publication of the American Library Association. |

Young Reader's Choice Award |

Categories: Senior, Junior, Intermediate, Children's Books The Pacific Northwest Library Association's Young Reader's Choice Award is the oldest children's choice award in the U.S. and Canada. The award was established in 1940 by a Seattle bookseller, the late Harry Hartman, who believed every student should have an opportunity to select a book that gives him or her pleasure. Nominations are taken only from children, teachers, parents and librarians in the Pacific Northwest ~ Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana and Washington. Winners represent popularity with young readers in 3 levels: junior (4th-6th grades), intermediate (7th-9th grades) and senior (10th-12 grades), and are announced in mid April each year. *In 1990 the original award was divided into Senior and Junior. Intermediate was added 2002. |

Independent Publisher Book Award for Fiction |

Category: Literary Fiction The Independent Publisher Book Awards, launched in 1996, were designed to bring increased recognition to the deserving but often unsung titles published by independent authors and publishers. Established as the first awards program open exclusively to independents, the "IPPYs" reward those who exhibit the courage, innovation, and creativity to bring about change in the world of publishing. Independent spirit and expertise comes from publishers of all sizes and budgets, and books are judged with that in mind. All independent, university, small press, and self-publishers who produce books intended for the North American market are eligible to enter. This award is given in May of each year. |

National Book Critics Circle Award |

Each year in March, they present awards to the best books published in English in six categories: Fiction, General Nonfiction, Biography, Autobiography, Poetry, and Criticism. *In 2005 the category Autobiography/Biography was separated into Memoir/Autobiography and Biography. |

These annual awards are chosen by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of American (SFWA) for the best science fiction and fantasy in five categories: novel, novella, novelette, short story and script. The categories are defined by length in words. The award itself is a transparent block with an embedded glitter spiral nebula. Our list is for the best novel of the year. |

Category: Sci Fi and Fantasy The Hugo Awards are awards for excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy. The chrome, rocket ship shaped awards were first presented in 1953, and have been awarded every year since 1955. The awards, which are named after Hugo Gernsback, founder of the first major SF magazine Amazing Stories, are run by and voted on by fans. The Hugo Awards are awarded each year at the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon). While there are dozens of categories of Hugos, our list gives you the winners in the Novel category. |
