This is the story of Jacob, the child of wealthy parents and who has a special bond with his grandfather. As a child, the grandfather used to tell him wild and fantastical tales of special children he used to know, children who had special abilities. When his grandfather dies under mysterious circumstances, Jacob goes on a mission to find out what his grandfather's dying words were about. His search leads him to a remote island off of the United Kingdom where he finds a rotting mansion and strange happenings. This is a book where not everything is as it seems. I thought the author was wildly creative in telling this story. There were one or two minor plot points that were unresolved, but the story was very enjoyable. Some vintage, black and white photographs are used to further the story. I really enjoyed reading this and though it started somewhat slowly, by the end I was left wanting more. Fortunately, the author left the ending somewhat open for the possibility of a sequel.

A gripping read. Jacob grows up with his grandfather telling him 'fairy stories' and showing him 'fake' snapshots of fantastical persons...an invisible boy, a flying girl, a boy who has bees living inside him. Jacob, and his family too, discount these as ramblings, moreso as the grandfather ages. Then the grandfather dies, and the circumstances involved in and following his death send Jacob on an adventure where nothing is as it seems, and where the benign can kill you.
I read this in a little over an hour. Literally could not put it down. The vintage photos included in the text add to the creepy factor considerably.

Wow.... I really, really loved this book! It is unlike anything I've ever read before and I loved the random pictures throughout. This is a book all ages would enjoy and I really hope there would be a sequel because I didn't want it to end. This was a quick read for me, finished within 24 hours. So glad I found this book!

Looks like I'm in the minority here but I didn't like this book. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but I can tell you this was not it. What made me purchase this book was the fantastically creepy pictures throughout and I just couldn't wait to see what the story lines behind the pictures were. The main character visits an orphanage type home on an island to find these "peculiar" children there with these unrealistic abilities. I thought the plot was dull, the abilities too unbelievable, and the lack of creepiness to the story was such a let down after viewing the photos. I thought there could have been so much more creepiness and imagination to the story. I have to remind myself that this is labeled as a children's book (although I wouldn't let my 12 year olds read it because I thought there was just a tad too much mature content) and maybe that's why I was disappointed in the simplicity of the story. I don't recommend this book.

I Loved this book! The cover definitely drew me in. It was geared towards YA, but it was a good storyline, different. The pictures were creepy which just added to the believability factor. Great read!

This book is so unique. It is partly fantasy, partly adventure, partly eccentric photo collection. I would classify it as YA, which I hadnt really realized when I chose the book. Personally,it is so different that there are few people to whom I would be comfortable recommend it to. But, I really enjoyed it, and have been thinking about it for days after finishing it.

Wow, what a story! I love this book! It is different from anything I have ever read, however to describe it is difficult because it would ruin the experience of it, I think. If you like the "Harry Potter" books, or unique, well-written stories outside the box, you will like this. I could not put it down from start to finish! Very original. Wonderful book!

I enjoyed this book, and the way it ended, it is obvious to me that the author plans on a series; or at least a follow up to this title. One thing that bothered me was that the main character is supposed to be 16 (17?) years old but his vocabulary is far beyond any teenager I know. I don't just mean "big words" either. His knowledge of certain things was a bit unbelievable. It was still a good book and if there IS a second one, I will most likely read it.

I wanted to read this book so badly I actually bought the book. The cover and theme were fascinating. The book started out as a very interesting plot with a lot of potential, but I thought it deteriorated fairly fast. By midway through, I wasn't the least bit interested in this quirky kind of writing and weird characters, although I made myself finish it. So disappointing!!! It had such possibilities which just never panned out. However, I have to admit that the photos alone were worth the purchase price. Just don't get too excited about the storyline.

This book is so intriguing. From the picture on the cover, to the decorated end papers, to the vintage photographs, it was one delight after the other.
I wish the text lived up to the beautiful presentation. The book, about a boy named Jacob who tries to uncover the mystery of his grandfather's death, is a trip to a land of "peculiar children"--those with special abilities pictured in the vintage photographs. Add in some evil soul-suckers and you are all set.
My biggest complaints were about the photos. The story did not naturally flow for me. I could almost see the author laying the pictures out and mapping the story accordingly. (I imagine something like this: "Oh, this kid with a bee beard needs to show up in chapter 5 so the girl with the mouth on the back of her head can appear by chapter 6".) Though the story lagged in some places, the photos would perk it back up again.
It has a very "ordinary kid becomes extraordinary through discovering hidden powers" vibe--like Harry Potter.
Though this book is appropriate for teens and for mature younger readers, I think a few crude references will keep it out of my 4th grade classroom library. A shame--because the premise would be highly entertaining for them.

This provides a reading experience unlike any other I've had. The story is punctuated with actual vintage photographs that add to the story and bring the characters to life. The writing is beautiful. Yes, it's a young adult novel but it doesn't feel like it. The story is wonderfully done. It drew me in from the very first pages. It's a fast, easy read. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves to read a good story.

This remarkable book should be seen and read by everyone, please!! It is a fine marriage of wonderful storytelling and old (very old!) photographs.
A young man who was raised listening to his Grandfather's stories about peculiar children and hidden monsters nearly has a break down when his Grandfather is killed by a monster only his Grandson can see. This book took me into a world of "if" and I really wanted to move there, just to meet these children. Wow! A new favorite. Suspenseful, well written, exciting, edge of your seat action. Wonderful inclusion of actual vintage photographs really made the book special. Artfully conceived, and beautifully written. Cannot wait to read the second novel! What a creative mind that Random Riggs has!

I saw the video for this book on amazon and said i have to have it even though i wasnt a 100% sure what it was about.
The story is nothing like anything Ive ever read before, the pictures are real vintage pictures which really added to the story (it almost made me feel like I was a kid again reading a book with pictures and that was fun!)
I read a review that said the story felt like it was all written off the pictures and I kept that in mind as I read the book. I have to disagree, they inhanced it even if the author did do that, then he is a genius because its a very orginal story.
I gave it 4 stars because normally these arent the type of novels I like to read that involve fantasy- still a good read

It was okay. I didn't investigate it as closely as I should and didn't realize it was mainly aimed at young adult readers. The main characters are young children or teenagers (sort of, well, you'll see). Interesting premise with a good start but leaves lots of questions hanging. Photos are a nice touch and make the book shorter than the pages listed since many take up a whole page.

This book is a bit like The Nightmare Before Christmas - in that it's too scary for the little ones, but maybe not creepy enough for older teens. Having said that, it's well worth the read. There are some plot holes, but it's still quite the page turner which is ALWAYS a good thing. The author actually built the story around 'peculiar' old photos he collected (which enhance the book beautifully) - a refreshing burst of creativity when so much today is vapid and stale.

Hmmm - I was suckered into this one by the interesting photos and cool names...and that's all there was to it! Darn. The book - was just not so great. I am seeing it did get a lot of positive reviews, but I have to confess I didn't enjoy the writing or the story. They just did not live up to the photographs. I was expecting Dean Koontz (even though it was for teens) and thought it was more like a weak Eva Ibbottson.

I bought this book because it was highly rated by so many book lists and because there were so many people waiting for it on PBS. If only I had known. Amazon's blurb says the author "spent his formative years making silly movies." In "Miss Peregrine's Home..." he has graduated to making silly books. I read over 150 pages without being interested; but I kept reading in hopes there would be a sudden reason to continue. The old photographs are the best thing, and may be the only good thing, about the book. However, the photos made me think more about the author's process than about the story. Did Riggs find the pictures first & create the book; or did he write the book then go looking for photos? Either way, it was often hard to relate the photos to the book. In fact, I found myself constantly going back and rereading in case I'd missed something. Many pictures seemed to have been inserted for no reason, except they were interesting to the author. There are places in the story where I became interested in a character; but most of the characters were flat and poorly drawn. Probably two of the most uninteresting characters were the 16-year-old narrator and Miss Peregrine. To sum up the problems I had with the book, it had no real ending. Nothing was resolved. It was just a way to set up the reader for sequels.
This book is billed by Amazon as for age 13 and up. If I were an adult buying for a child, I'd read this one before giving it. The "horror" scenes are filled with what seems to be gratuitous violence for violence's sake. I'm glad it was a gift. I hate to have paid for it.

This book was introduced to me thru an online book club. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I am not one who reads syfy or books about creatures or the paranormal - not really my taste. This book does border on mind bending ideas and illusions, however.
I will not give away the story plot, but I will tell you that this book came about because of a group of very old photographs. The author decided to write a story around the photos - photos of people he never knew. The story is intriguing - keeps you reading and even referring back to a picture, a time or two. Have been told that the pictures accompany this book on Kindle - altho they are very small and hard to see. The pictures help to make this book what it is and you would not want to miss out on them. Have heard this may be made into a movie - one I would go see.
I hope that this author continues this story - hopefully with a whole new set of old photos.

I initially bought this book based on the cover...and title! It was a very different type of book for me and after reading about 50 pages, I wasnt' sure where it was going. I picked it up again about a week or so later and it went somewhere I did not expect...and that is a good thing. I ended up really enjoying this book and after picking it up the second time did not put it down until it was finished! It has a very unique take on time which I found interesting. The photos were dead-on with the description and I didn't know they were real photos until I read the end credits, so kudos to the author, collectors and photographers!

Wow! What a great book. The characters are well developed and very interesting. This is not your normal story. The twist and turns make it a real page turner and I would love to see a sequel. I want to know where they went and what happens next!

I started reading this book probably because it sounded so "peculiar". I rarely read anything that might be tagged as paranormal or fantasy but this is the category for this book . In the first 50 or so pages I was not sure whether I would continue it or not. I found the protagonist, Jacob, very interesting though - he's a pretty normal 16 yr old. The writing for such a topic is done so well by this author that the premise of the plot is almost believable.
Jacob's grandfather was sent from Poland by his parents to an island off the coast of Wales (Cairnholm) - supposedly to save him from the oncoming WWll ravages against the Jews. Jacob as a youngster hears so many interesting stories from his grandfather but as time goes by and Jacob ages, he begins to wonder if any of it could actually be true. Then a tragedy occurs and Jacob is compelled, with some minor assistance from his father, to visit the island and investigate the source of so many of his grandfather's preposterous(?) stories....
Throughout this book, Jacob remains pretty true to his teenage American self and he is a great main character.
There are what appear to be vintage photos in this book but as one reviewer said:
"The writing is so descriptive and evocative that I now question if the vintage photographs interspersed throughout the narratives are even necessary to the enjoyment of the story."
This entire book did not disappoint. A bittersweet ending but the only ending it could've had and very satisfying.
The pictures do set a certain tone for the story though but the writing is so descriptive that it gives you a good visualiztion of what is going on.

Jacob is a sixteen year old who witnesses a terrible family tragedy. His parents feel he is traumatized to an extent that it has had an effect on his mental health. In an effort to heal, Jacob and his father travel to a remote island in Wales where his grandfather once lived. The premise for his parents is that if he can see the reality of of the place that has mythical characteristics in his grandfather's stories, it will help alleviate his angst. What Jacob finds is entirely different. His journey leads him to a whole other world and an adventure he never would have believed possible.
"Peculiar" is an appropriate word for the title and the story. The author's imagination in building this story is impressive. The story has many different elements and a lot going on. I loved the fact that a series of odd, unrelated photographs come together in a cohesive tale. Built into the story are also historical references that ground the book in reality. Even though you know the story is a flight of fancy, those bits of reality make you stop and wonder.
The book builds with the pace picking up as you get deeper into the story. The ending comes filled with action, and then you are left with the idea that another story is yet to come. Perhaps a sequel.

A interestingly strange novel. The writing was great but I had some disconnect with the characters. They were not as well developed as I would of hoped. The author has a outrageously strange and magical imagination and makes this a perfect story for a series. The real vintage photo's are amazing and add a whole new dimension to the story. Making it very real. This author had a huge opportunity to make this a deeper story if he had only developed the background history of the children, you would have more attachment to them. I read this book after reading many spectacular reviews and hearing it had already been optioned for a film. The story centers around 16 year old Jacob who has grown up hearing the fantastic tales of his aging grandfather. Although his family has written his grandfather off as a crazy person, Jacob is the sole member of the family who believes the stories might be true. When his grandfather is killed by a strange monster (that only Jacob can see) he sets off on an odyssey to discover his grandfather's past and to fulfill his dying wish. Although I enjoyed the first half of the book I found the second half really dragged. Sometimes when you read a book you have the feeling it is being written as a movie and I definitely got that feeling with this one. Overall, good read. Not great.

It was interesting, but I felt it ended rather abruptly (possibly in view of a sequel?)I did not think the characters were developed as much as they could have been to draw me in as a reader. I was a bit disappointed in what I thought seemed a promising premise.

300+ pages? Pshaw. This book could have been 3000 pages long and I still would have loved it. Like many reviewers, the creepy vintage photography sucked me in, but the imaginative tale of mystery and friendship kept me captivated for the oh ... 2 hours, maybe? ... that it took me to read the entire book and wishing for more. I am beyond glad that Ransom Riggs has chosen to write a sequel.

Well, this was a good book. Though, it took me awhile to get lost in it. I felt that the story kind of drags itself. It wasn't a book that would keep calling me back to pick it up again when I set it down. It could have been a little bit better written I think but it was a good read for a first written novel.

I wanted to love this book. Everyone talked about this book as if it were "THE" book to read. It started off really well, and I thought, how clever! We're going to have something slightly paranormal that's really an allegory to the horrors of the Holocaust. No. That would have been brilliant. The author should have run with that. Instead we get a foggy island, some kind of strange time-travel, Harry-Potter, X-Men mash-up with monsters that reminded me of the Langoliers. What I will give the author props for is his use of photography. The collection of old photography used in this book was so interesting and unusual. I think the author's desire to showcase this collection left him to make poor plot choices. There was one scene in particular that dropped very heavy clues to indicate there was a traitor in the group, and then....nothing. It's as if the author forget what direction he was going. I recommend looking at the photography in this book, but the story is optional.

Album cover got me first. Then the title, the synopsis, and then the whole story. The author, Ransom Riggs has got quite a very imaginative mind! I recommend this book!

Here's an entertaining mix of history, fantasy, mystery, and the macabre. It creates an engrossing story with the successful use of vintage photographs that engages the imagination. Highly recommended! 4 stars.

My book club read this book, so I really tried to get into the story, characters, plot etc. I personally didn't love the book. I struggled to keep my interest, as I am not a fan of blending the Holocaust with fictional monsters and other made up elements.

Reading this brought me into a different world and I loved the escape. What an imagination! If you like fantasy, Harry Potter-type books, this is for you!

This was a most unusual book, which after I read a few chapters, drew me in. The pictures added the visual aspect that actually enhanced the story. Great read! Look forward to the sequel!

WOW WOW WOW!
This book started out slow but then it started getting really good and I could NOT put it down except to sleep.
This book is one of the most different and unusual books in a long time that I have read. The photographs are fantastic--supposedly the author really did find most of these through friends and only a 'few' have been photoshopped. :)

I really enjoyed this odd story and am looking forward to the next one. The characters were interesting and endearing. Their situation was unique and adventurous. Great first book from Ransom Riggs!

Not my favorite book by far. I liked the basics of it...the time travel, the attempts to learn about his grandfather. But the photos actually ruined it a little bit. Some were great- the cover photo! Those clown kids! But others were forced...the girl with the backmouth, for example- her photo was just of a the back of a girl's head. It felt a smidge contrived, as if there were a pile of photos and the author thought "well, where can I stick this one? Oh, how about this, she has a mouth under all that hair". Boo. Won't be reading the sequel(s).

It's clearly a young adult book. I see the likeness to Harry Potter that others have mentioned. While it was OK, I'm not sure I would read any of the many sequels. Nostly read it to see if it would be OK to give to my 12-year-old granddaughter. Yes.

I did not enjoy this book as much as many have, but I do see where the praise is coming from. To say that this is a very different kind of story is an understatement. If I needed to compare it to something, I'd say it bears the greatest resemblance to the X-Men, with more of a fantasy aspect to it as well. I am trying to avoid giving anything important away, so I'm not going to get into specifics. Yet, the way in which the author was able to collect a series of strange old photographs and create a story to go with them was rather interesting and creative, while adding a fun new element to the story that I certainly have not encountered in quite this way before. Overall, it's far from the best book I've read in the genre, but it's definitely one of those that many are talking about for a legitimate reason, and as such is well worth at least giving it a shot.

This was a very different type of book. The pictures added a good touch. I enjoyed it and can't wait to read the second one. The author talked about the pictures in the back of the book and that was really a creative way to write a book.

The main character of the story is a teenage boy, that adores his grandfather but has doubts of the validity of his peculiar stories. After the grandfather's death the boys father takes him to the moors of the UK,where his grandfather grew up. Not only does he discover that his grandfather's outlandish stories were true, but that Jacob has to carry on in grandfather's steps to save the "peculiar" world in which he and others live.
This book may appeal to preteen through adult readers.

The first third of the book was a tad slow, but I enjoyed the second two thirds - when Jacob visited the island, met the peculiar children, and they had to band together to solve a problem.

The premise of this novel was innovative and refreshing in the land of sameness that the book industry has become. I enjoyed the novelty of reading a plot I had not read 100 times over. The fact that it was well-written was a big plus. That being said, I was quite annoyed by the pictures. After reading Riggs' comments I understand why he included them and it's pretty awesome that the photographs are actual photographs, but they broke up the reading process for me and also took away my ability to imagine what the children and creatures looked like. Otherwise, a great read!

I haven't read YA fiction in a long time - not since I was a YA! But this book really intrigued me. When I saw it in the store, the pictures had me so curious. I thought what a creative author to add this wonderful "art" to his story.
I love how the story unfolds in your mind - the relationships Jacob has with his grandfather, his therapist and then all the peculiars and his Dad. It kept me turning pages all the way to the end. My biggest surprise being the note at the end just prior to the acknowledgements, knocked my socks off! Can't wait to read Hollow City!

I didn't actually finish this book. The premise seemed original and the pictures with the text really added to it, but the story didn't keep me glued. I think it is a YA book, and while I do enjoy some YA books, this one seemed more suited to a kid than an adult.

Spoiler Alert: This review may contain one or more spoilers. There is definitely something peculiar about Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Unfortunately for this review the peculiar part is the utterly baffling dilemma this book presented. I will break this down into the good and the bad.
Good
1. Ransom Riggs is a delightful writer. He has a way of using his words and sentences to create magic. I was entranced and fascinated by every word. I was hoping with every fiber of my being that the plot would live up to that promise.
2. The pictures included in this story add a lot of intrigue and ingenuity to the story that is unique among books of its kind.
3. The first 150 pages of this book are absolutely fantastic! The stories and pictures will draw you in and make you want to skip the rest just to find out how the mystery ends.
Bad
1. The main character, Jacob, is very hard to like. He is a spoiled rich kid who does nothing except complain about how pointless and boring his life is. I could not sympathize with him and so I didn't really care about what he had to say.
2. After the first 150-200 pages there is no more mystery. All the secrets have been revealed and all the only thing left to tell is the end of the story. Unfortunately you don't get the end of the story, you get a cliffhanger after 100 pages of drama that was too predictable to be entertaining. It's like when you're having a conversation and want so badly to hear the end of your friend's story and then the call cuts out. That is about how the end of this book felt to me.
3. While the idea of the time loops was interesting, it wasn't explained enough so that the ending made any sense. To me, it felt like conflicting information and I didn't get it and by that point I didn't really care that I didn't understand.
4. At the end of the day I have to be as interested in the end of a book as the beginning in order to be interested in reading a sequel or the next in the series. This book fell sadly short of that. The beginning was so fantastic but I was so bored by the end that I just didn't care any longer. And that is ultimately how I feel about a sequel, all my interesting and caring was used up by the end of this one to bother.

Interesting story, the creepy pictures added a lot to the storyline. I like to think that the author collected the various odd photos & wrote the book to weave a common thread amongst them. If so, he has a very creative mind. I enjoyed it, recommend.

Wow, wow, wow! What an awesome read! I did pick this book because I judged it by its cover...and it kept me captive from the first to last page. What a great two days! I may have to reread it just for the thrill of it. I really hope there is a sequel.

I don't know if I loved the book or hated it but it is different and will keep you intrigued. It is Ransom Riggs first novel. I can't decide if it is a stroke of brillance or just plain foolish. Love having the pictures throughout. Well if it makes me think that much I give it 4 stars.

For his whole life, Jacob Portman's grandfather told him outrageous stories that somehow rang true. As it turns out, his grandfather's parents sent him from his home in Germany during WWII to keep him safe (he was Jewish and not safe in Germany). He ended up in an orphanage in Wales where there are strange children and where weird things happen. When his grandfather is murdered, Jacob finds strange clues at his grandfather's house that send him on a journey of discovery to Wales. When Jacob finds the bombed out remains of Miss Peregrine's Orphanage, he is defeated until he starts thinking of the clues. What follows is an exciting and dangerous adventure into the past where Jacob meets Emma, Millard, Bronwyn, Enoch, Claire, Olive, Horace, Hugh and of course, Miss Peregrine.
This starts out rather slowly but interesting enough to keep me reading. I actually found that I couldn't put it down...every spare moment I found myself reaching for this book. I found myself reading faster and faster as the action kicked up a notch worried when the monsters came and Miss Peregrine was kidnapped. I loved the creepy photos laced throughout the book. There are a great complement to the story except the one thing I wanted a photo of, wasn't there - the house itself. Here's the fabulous description given by the author: "What stood before me now as no refuge from monsters but a monster itself, staring down from it's perch on the hill with vacant hunger. Trees burst forth from broken windows and skies of scabrous vine gnawed at the walls like antibodies attacking a virus - but the house seemed unkillable, resolutely upright despite the wrongness of its angles and the jagged teeth of sky visible through section of collapsed roof." It was amazing to me that a scared 16 year old boy actually went inside this wreck of house...and more than once too.
NOTE: This is definitely young adult but for the older set...mild cursing, gross murders and heavy petting.

I loved this book. Initially I was fascinated with the title, but the story draws you in immediately and keeps you riveted to the end. A great read.

What an imaginative tale! Definitely a young adult book - maybe middle-school-aged children, due to some very light romance and heavier themes (i.e., a father who is easily discouraged from fulfilling his dreams; the violent death of a grandfather; other violent deaths). Riggs has built a story based upon genuine vintage photographs that, given context via the story, appear eery and sort of disturbing. It's a fascinating plot involving time travel, time loops, heinous villains/monsters and children with extraordinary powers.
I have enjoyed other YA books very much (Harry Potter series and Hunger Games to name a couple), but this one was just so-so. Once the children's powers were revealed and the time loop was explained, the book lost a bit of steam until the "monsters" started killing things. I won't be looking for the next book in the series, but I do believe, and other reviews confirm, that this is one of those books that you'll either love or be ambivalent about. I loved this book and I hate fiction....could not put it down! The cover attracted me initially (and the fact that he used REAL photos (some admittedly doctored)). Worth your time if you enjoy a good read.

First off I have to say I cant believe I waited this long to read Riggs creepy photograph filled story of peculiar children. Finding out the eerie photos were actually taken from personal collections added a disturbing quality to the read.

I love every character involved in this haunting tale. Each one stood out on their own and Riggs ties each and every one of them together seamlessly. The story telling is amazing and with the added photos makes it easier for the reader to visualize the children. Riggs also answers all the questions that burn inside the reader from the start yet leaves a few things in the air for maybe another book.
Wonderful original characters and an inventive plot lead this read to be a good one to pick up. I loved the added historical aspects thrown in to provide a bit of realism to the story and the vintage photographs were just a bonus. If you are looking for a unique tale, this is the one for you.

This was a book I have wanted to read for a long time. I finally got around to reading it, it was just as fantastically quirky I had hoped. It was a fun and mysterious read, also a little bit creepy at parts.
After the horrific death of Jacobs grandfather, Jacob slumps into a deep depression. Its determined that the only way to get Jacob out of this slump is for him to journey to the mysterious island that his grandfather grew up on. Jacob and his father journey to a remote island off of the coast of Wales. There Jacob investigates a peculiar childrens home that his grandfather grew up in. Jacobs only clues are some mysterious pictures his grandfather left him and a peculiar note.
This was a fun and quirky read. Its mainly a mystery about a young man trying to solve his grandfather's mysterious past....along the way he discovers children with strange powers, time travel, and evil monsters.
Jacob is an okay lead character. He is mainly characterized by his obsession to find out what really happened to his grandfather. Other than that, he wasnt a real distinctive character for me.
What really drives this story is the mystery behind Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children. The mystery unravels deliberately and things get more and more complex as Jacob unravels more and more secrets on this remote Wales island.
I am not going to get a lot more into the story beyond that because I dont want to spoil anything. Lets just say that through some quirks in time, all of these peculiar children that Jacob is so fascinated by may still be alive.
Of course a big draw for this book are all of the strange pictures throughout. I really enjoyed their addition to the story, they made the peculiar children all that more real to the reader. The fact that these are all actually real vintage pictures found in old picture collections makes this book even more unique and special.
The book was well written, engaging, and easy to read. What really drives the story is the mystery and what makes it enjoyable are the quirky pictures throughout. The main story is wrapped up pretty well, but there are things left unanswered for future books in the series.
Overall I enjoyed this book. Its a very creative idea and implemented very well. The mystery is what drives the story and the pictures are fascinating and interesting. Jacob as a character could have used a bit more depth, but that really isnt what this book is about. I am curious to see what the second book in this series will be about. I'm undecided about this book. It is the most unique story I've ever read and for that it gets higher marks. This isn't the type of book I normally read and the first time I've ever read about loops and time travel. I did enjoy the pictures in the book. I think they added to the overall intrigue of the story.
I thought the story started out slow so if you think that too, keep reading. The end of the story left quite a few questions for me. Hmmmmm..... Interesting!

This book starts out with a bang. It drew me in, and I was excited to see where it would go. I liked the action and the mystery, and I really liked the way the author wrote his book around the old photos that he included right in the story. It made the characters seem much more real.
The problems with this book for me began about a third of the way through. The story took on a rather confusing quality, and several times I had to set it down, walk away for a while, and then come back to it. Once I figured out where the story was going, I wasn't sure if I was all that interested anymore. The characters were not all that likable.
I agree with another reviewer in that the ending of the book was rather disappointing for me. By this point, I hadn't really developed any real liking for any of the characters, and I sort of felt as though I was stuck watching the end of a rather mediocre film on the sci-fi network because there's "just nothing else on". I can definitely tell from the ending that the author has plans to write more books in this series. Will I read them? Probably not.

Wow - what a story! Deliciously creepy, all the peculiar children use their particular talent to help Jacob realize who he is and survive their adventures. Easy and engaging read, it was hard to put down. Loved it! D.

This was a unique and interesting read. I found that the most interesting part of the book was how this first time author developed his theme. I suggest reading the afterword after you finish the story I found it quite intriguing.

I had so much looked forward to reading this book. The basic plot is fascinating but I did not find the book that interesting and barely finished it at all. I don't think the author knows how to spin a fantasy. If Dean Koontz or Stephen King had written this it would have been much deeper. It was like a Lemony Snicket book but without the charming humor he has.

I picked up this book frankly," because it was "there". I was at my local bookstore and I'd thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, this book fell flat for me. I will admit that the story line is quite interesting, but I found myself wanting to put this book down, due to the fact it was just too predictable and slow. I visited my sister the following week, she had previously read the book and told me to give it a chance. The storyline definitely picked up, but I believe too quickly. It seemed as though the author tried to pack too much information into the end to lead up to a sequel or series. I won't be reading them.

What a great story! Looking forward to the sequel! I must be honest in saying that I would not usually read this sort of book ie fantasy/science fiction etc, but the title and photographs throughout the book had me intrigued. I think I originally obtained this book with my teenager in mind (a fan of the Lemony Snicket books), but as it turned out, I am the one who read it and enjoyed it immensely. Now my adult daughter is reading it and also gives great reviews! Not like any other book out there!

While reading this book I kept asking myself is this a teen book or for adults or both. In the end it did not matter I enjoyed it. The cover drew me in. I looked forward to reading the book and seeing each of the interesting photos. The photos added to the book making the book more intriguing.

OMG! I read this book in one night. I couldn't put it down. My 12 yr old granddaughter showed me a new book she had started and was really excited about it. When she showed me I said that I had just gotten that book and we were excited to read it together. I sat down one night to catch up to her on page 44 and FINISHED THE BOOK! It definitely was not what I was expecting but was suprisingly even better. Awesome read!!

Super-quick read. At the end I felt like I had just been reading a setup for the sequel. But the author has an easy-to-read style that keeps you interested. The photos were smartly integrated in to the story.

A little too much 'science fictiony' for me. Not sure what I was expecting, maybe a bit more thriller than science fiction. It wrapped up nice enough, but I found myself skipping through the last 20-30 pages.

I was hoping for something... darker. The creepy old photos suggested a more sinister storyline to my poor brain but this was still an Excellent Book! Wonderful, fresh and inventive story, many of the characters are relatable and this is especially true of the main character, Jacob, which is convenient inasmuch as the reader spends a good deal of time getting to know him. I read this book in just a couple of days which is pretty good for me lately. (my kids devour my free time)

Quirk Books have been cheerfully producing their altered classics, which have been fun, but gimmick-y. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (and the prequel and sequel), The Meowmorphosis, for example, rely on classics of literature for their characters and basic plots then add in elements of horror (Zombies!) or a comedic change of species (Gregor Samsa, insect no more! Now a kitten!) to breathe a different life into the stories. So, to some extent, I was expecting a humourous book in a similar vein as the above. Instead, Ransom Riggs' Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a surprisingly good novel, the only "gimmick-y" feel attached to it is from the photographs, but even they work well, and add creepy corroborative ambiance rather than humour.
This is a strange tale of old pains seeking resolution in a younger generation, secluded and hidden family history finding clarity and at least partial understanding. As a child, Jacob is enamored with his grandfather Abe's stories of his childhood living on an island in Wales with strange children with unique abilities. His grandfather offers proofs - strange old pictures of a levitating girl, or an invisible boy, his empty garments standing in the frame - but as time went on, Jacob began to believe the photos were somehow faked, and that his grandfather was only telling stories. Then his grandfather is violently attacked, and Jacob finds him in time to receive a final enigma - a date and a bizarre clue that appears to have no relation to anything. While holding his grandfather, Jacob sees someone/thing that he thinks may be the killer, though no one quite believes his description of a monster. Eventually, on the strength of his psychiatrist's advice, Jacob and his father go to the island where Abe had lived in an effort to understand the old man, and free Jacob of his anxieties and fears. Then the story begins to unfold.
Riggs' writing is excellent, and the characters are compelling. I especially like that the lead is an emotionally fragile/damaged teenager who lacks the traditional Holden Caulfield brand of extreme cynicism. Nor is he painted a hero - he's more average than anything else, and he feels very plausible, which makes a nice change.
I cheerfully give this about 4 stars, and look forward to seeing further adventures, preferably with Mr. Riggs writing them.
(I would like to add that the book has a nice heft to it (hardback edition), and the paper is impressively heavy.)
