Back to the Bedroom is cute and quirky, but a very fast and light read. There are definitely shades of the Stephanie Plum series. So if you enjoyed them, you should probably like this one.

From the back of the book:

Fairwinds, Foul Deeds

Sent to care for a young widower's son, Varina Cameron was captivated by Florida's Gulf Coast. But the paradise of Andrew McLaren's plantation harbored dark secrets-not the least of which was whether Andrew's wife had died of natural causes. Trapped in a maze of murder and mystery, Varina turned to McLaren for protection only to discover that the handsome botanist's passionate nature offered a different kind of comfort. Although Varina wanted nothing more than Andrew's love, a near fatal accident led her to suspect that in his powerful embrace she might meet her own untimely demise.

The Duke's Easter Lady was an interesting book, but it seemed to be a little scattered. She hated the duke, she loved him, she had unexplained omnipotent dreams, but somehow it was compelling enough to finish.

I would also like to mention that the description is a bit misleading. Lady Emma Winslow was actually left to the Duke in her brothers will to pay off a gambling debt. She has to go and live with him, or she won't receive a meager income from her brother's estate. Emma's belief that the Duke tricked her brother into doing this colors her opinion of him throughout the book.

Overall, The Earl and the Heiress is a light quick romance that amuses, and is worth the read.

I found Noelle to be a bit at odds with herself. One moment she's barging into Justin's house and telling him off and the next she's perfectly happy to do whatever he thinks is best.

From the inside jacket:

Noelle Armstrong never expected that she and her younger sister and brother, beautiful Ferne and young Winston, Viscount Sterling, would have the means to go to London for even one Season. But when Great-aunt Sylvia, an ancient, curmudgeonly lady, leaves her house and a modest inheritance to Noelle, that chance becomes a reality. Now, perhaps, an advantageous match can be made for Ferne - and possibly even Winston.

With their widowed Aunt Hattie, the Armstrongs take up residence in Aunt Sylvia's London home. But with no connections in the proper places, how are they to go about being accepted by the ton? Ingenious Nelly is undaunted. First, she engages the services and below stairs connections of Taylor, the former servant of their dead man-of-the-world father. And then, one morning, an advertisement appears in the London Gazette:

Loyal, intelligent, clean white dogs of the Maltese breed. Inquiries No. 4 Chauncey Square. Five only, one hundred pounds each.

The next day, the little dogs themselves make their public debut.

As Noelle has planned, the curiosity roused by the notice and the sight of the small pets brings the ton to their door - most particularly, one Justin, Earl of Wrenthe, who buys one of the puppies for his mistress - but soon replaces it with a farewell necklace and transfers the dog to his dowager mother. In the process, he and Noelle figuratively but intensely cross swords; Noelle on behalf of feckless Ferne, who has inadvertently gotten involved in a minor scandal which her sister blames on the earl; Wrenthe because he has never been challenged by a young lady he finds disturbingly attractive.

In this charming and unusual romance, whose characters - including the bouncy Maltese puppies - cannot fail to engage the reader, the author has provided another sparkling novel of Regency times.

I found Erotic Fairy Tales by Mitzi Szereto to be very disappointing. Now this may be because the first book I ever read in the genre was Enchanted by Nancy Madore, which I loved, so maybe all spicy fairy tale books are like this one.

SPOILERS

I ordered this book expecting fairy tales with more adult relationships, not disturbing ones. I found the short story "The Shoes That Were Danced To Pieces" very odd; a man who gets off by wearing women's soiled, moist underwear is disgusting. Or "The Turnip" in which a man has a gigantic turnip growing out of his penis that the king likes to ride like a horse. "Cinderella" was disturbing as well; the prince only pursued and married her in order to get her other glass slipper, so that he could have sex with both shoes, one after the other. All the while Cinderella spends her nights enjoying garden vegetables, and she wasn't eating them for lunch.

To be fair, not all of the stories were horrible, some were okay. Which is why I gave it two stars instead of one. Others may find this book enjoyable, I didn't.

Another light-hearted regency fun. Delphine was quick enough to marry Jules, but then doesn't know what to do with him. He continually shocks and embarrasses her with the things he has done to survive since fleeing France. For example: juggling and magic shows. A very fast and pleasant read that's sweet and funny at times.

Note: This is a large print edition.

Another quick and quirky regency romance from Marion Chesney. Fanny and Charles are tricked into marriage by their parents, with each believing the other has money. Facing a life of poverty, they decide to go to London, and stay with Charles's aunt and live it up as two single wealthy cousins. They decided that should either of them find a "better" partner they'll simply get an annulment, but all the while they are of course perfect for one another. Overall, a charming regency romp.

Francesca?s father is a well-known painter in the bustling port city of Amsterdam; he is also a gambler. Though their household is in economic chaos, thankfully the lessons she learned in his studio have prepared her to study with Johannes Vermeer, the master of Delft. When she arrives to begin her apprenticeship, Francesca is stunned to find rules, written in her father?s hand, insisting that she give up the freedoms she once enjoyed at home- including her friendship with Pieter van Doorne, a tulip merchant. Unaware of a terrible bargain her father has made against her future, Francesca pursues her growing affection for Pieter even as she learns to paint like Vermeer, in layers of light. As her talent blooms, ?tulip mania? sweeps the land, and fortunes are being made on a single bulb. What seems like a boon for Pieter instead reveals the extent of the betrayal of Francesca?s father. And as the two learn the true nature of the obstacles in their path, a patron of Francesca?s father determines to do anything in his power to ensure she stays within the limits that have been set for her.

The Golden Tulip brings one of the most exciting periods of Dutch history alive, creating a page-turning novel that is as vivid and unforgettable as a Vermeer painting.

Here Was a Man
Here Was a Man
Author: Norah Lofts
Book Type: Paperback
  ?
Review Date: 2/21/2013

From the back cover:

In one of her earliest works, beloved author Norah Lofts brings us her riveting and romantic account of Sir Walter Raleigh and the court of Elizabeth I. Raleigh knew from the time he was a bou that his life would be exceptional. He dreams of someday exploring the New World he's heard about in snippets of sailors' stories on the docks of the fishing villages where he was raised; and his good fortune leads him to rise in the court of Elizabeth I becoming a most trusted friend and advisor to the power players of the day.

Raleigh's wit, ambition, and adventurous spirit endear him to all, including the queen herself, but Elizabeth's favor proves as much a hindrance as help, as Raleigh still has but one goal in mind - to take to the seas and secure his place as one of the great explorers of the age. The queen will not allow her young knight to be taken from her side, repeatedly refusing his requests for expeditions, until she at last reluctantly grants him permission to conquer in her name. Meanwhile, between journeys, his passion is stirred, not by the queen but by her lady-in-waiting Lisbeth. His loyalties are split between the boundless opportunities the queen can bestow and the pull of his own heart.

With cameo appearances by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Sydney, and other luminaries of the day, Loft once again paints a colorful, nuanced, and moving portrait of the Elizabethan Age. Here Was a Man is another timeless classic from the legendary Norah Lofts.

Hexed: Magic Dreams / Ice Shards / Double Hexed / Blood Debt
Review Date: 1/11/2013

Overall a nice selection of novellas.

Magic Dreams: The reason I started reading this book. (I've been on a bit of a "Kate Daniels" bender lately, and dug this one out of my TBR pile to tide me over until book 5 comes in the mail). While neither Kate nor Curran are actually in the story, it's still quite enjoyable reading about Jim and Dali finally getting together. (5 stars)

Ice Shards: I've not read anything in this series before but it was easy enough to follow. A nice quick read. (3 stars)

Double Hexed: Another great enstallment in the Stormwalker series. We get to revisit all of our favorite characters as they try to find a way out of a trap that basically turns all their various magical powers against them. (4.5 stars)

Blood Debt: I haven't read anything else by the author, and I just couldn't get into the story. (2 stars)

Just The Fax Ma'am, the second book in Leslie O'Kane's Molly Masters series picks up several months after the first with the death of Stephanie's husband and the birth of her baby. I thought it was better than the first book, Death And Faxes.

I think it says a lot about Molly that she's willing to go to such links to help Stephanie, the person she dislikes most, by solving the mystery of her husbands death.

Molly's husband is back from the Philippines and it's refreshing to read about a protagonist in a cozy who's not only already married, but happily so. They're clearly very devoted to one another.

Overall, I'd recommend it, but I think they should probably be read in order.
