Great resource for people who want to read more fantasy. I think a few of the listings are really sci-fi, like Ender's Game and the Foundation by Asimov.

Comment added 3/15/19 by vaderb - , :
I can't vote for any author where the series doesn't appear to have an end date. George Martin, JV Jones, Patrick Rothfuss.

Comment added 1/18/18 by Jay N. (ajdowning):
I like your list. The Legend of Drizzt was one of earliest fantasy books I've read.

Comment added 9/18/15 by Marta B. (martab):
Definitely need to add Laurel K Hamilton, Christine Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Mary Stewart's Crystal Cave Merlin series, Anne Rice witches series, Frank Herbert's Dune books (Sci-Fi/fantasy)...

Comment added 7/8/15 by Sara D. (sarajayne31324):
What about the Anita Blake series by Laurell k Hamilton

Comment added 6/22/15 by Val C. (vcat) - , :
Should add Voyage of the Fox Rider by Robin Hobb!

Comment added 6/10/15 by Duncan N.:
This list is missing Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margret Weis and Tracey Hickman.

Comment added 11/5/14 by Andrew N. - , :
I think that the Imager series from Modessit would be better than the Recluce series. it is better organized and easier to follow from the start.

Comment added 7/31/14 by Ari G.:
To whomever said enders game should be on here, this is a fantasy list, not science fiction.

also I agree with several about Mercedes Lackey but why be picky any or ALL of her books/series fit this catagory

Comment added 3/3/14 by Paul H. (paulie) - , :
Any of the Recluce or Imager books by Modessitt should or could be on this list

Comment added 9/24/13 by Deborah S. (mtglady):
I agree "Swan Song" by Robert McCammon should be on the list. Also add "The Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan.

Comment added 9/10/13 by Dorothy F. (dorothyinoz):
I agree with Acalla that Ender's Game should also be on this list.

Comment added 9/10/13 by Dorothy F. (dorothyinoz):
Please consider adding the Witches of Karres by James Schmitz to the list along with some of his Telzy books. He is a fantastic author, though out of print. Also I think Shards of Honor and Barrayar are Lois McMaster Bujold's best books.

Comment added 7/9/13 by maysied:
Gene Wolfe was awarded the Nebula Grand Master Award in 2013. He has written 100s of books, and I don't even see ONE listed here. If the current Grand Master can't get on the list...who can?

Comment added 6/22/13 by acalla:
Did I not see....ENDERS GAME???

Comment added 6/5/13 by maysied:
Also, I'd like to see "The Color of Distance on the list?

Comment added 5/16/13 by Carolyn F. (cappers):
Also here should be "Sunshine " by Robin McKinley. Or is that considered horror??

Comment added 5/16/13 by Carolyn F. (cappers):
I think " Swan Song " by Robert McCammon should be added. I re- read it every few years!

Comment added 5/12/13 by maysied:
How about the Tairen Soul series (4 books) by C. S. Lewis? I see his name mentioned twice in the list, but I am loving "Lord of the Fading Lands." I'm lucky enough to have a first edition autographed copy.

Comment added 12/26/12 by Amber T. (kindacrunchymama):
The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning is fantastic and addicting! I could seriously read the series over and over again. The first one is Dark Fever.

Comment added 12/1/12 by maysied:
As a 50 year sci-fi/fan lover, I had only read 3 of these books. But I have #219 to read. I'm looking for new concepts. So many of these are formula reads. Any ideas?

Comment added 10/31/12 by Amanda M. (tobeymomma):
wheres Laurell k hamilton??????

Comment added 10/21/12 by Monica D. (lilmon):
Also love how you have The Chronicles of Chrestomanci on your list, I love those books and thought it was a hidden wonder :)

Comment added 10/21/12 by Monica D. (lilmon):
I agree with Shanna, Court duel and crown duel by Sherwood Smith is awesome. Most of her work is great period. Also I remember reading Tamora Pierce when I was younger and loved her books!

Comment added 8/23/12 by Shanna S. (shandelic):
add court duel, and crown duel by Sherwood Smith. AMAZING.

Comment added 8/4/12 by Karen J. (rhyta):
p.s. Lighting Thief #175/211/212. Thanks for a great list. Sorry for the double post

Comment added 8/4/12 by Karen J. (rhyta):
I checked back and voted for some that were new. FYI, The Lighting Thief is listed 3 times...might want to correct that. :)

Comment added 7/3/12 by Kelly (snapdragon) - :
Good list. The sort of fantasy book I would recommend would depend a lot on the age, temperament, and existing interests of the reader. I loan out Robert Holdstock, Tim Powers, and early Tom Robbins quite a lot :)

Comment added 5/19/12 by Mary ann M. (applepie1658):
THERE ARE MANYFINE BOOKS I HAVE NOT READ BUT WOULD LIKE TO READ WHEN A CHANCE PRESENTS IT'S SELF

Comment added 5/17/12 by Erik D. (legendkeeper):
Added C.S. Lewis "Perelandra", part of a trilogy but stands alone, Lewis thought it was his best work. Also, "Lilith" by George MacDonald. (With Tolkein, Lewis helped found the modern fantasy genre, and MacDonald was a spiritual successor to both.)

Comment added 5/15/12 by Erik D. (legendkeeper):
Great list! Good to see Stephen Lawhead's "Paradise War," even though it's low on the list right now. The "Song of Albion" trilogy (Paradise War, Silver Hand, Endless Knot) is a masterpiece not to be missed.

Comment added 3/31/12 by VICKI T. (mamavik1) - , :
great books listed! Definitely will have new books to try now! Some old favorites I just knew would be on there, sure enough, they are. Would like to add some oldies but goodies- Sime-Gen and Savage empire by Jacqueline Lichtenburg and Jean Lorrah.

Comment added 3/24/12 by Daniel:
Some great books here, don't agree with all of them but most of them are definitely must reads. Great list overall for someone who hasn't read much in this genre.

Comment added 2/27/12 by Chris C. (chrisnsally) - , :
Here are two writers I started with that have been left out, Nancy Springer's White Hart and Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy.

Comment added 11/30/11 by Cheryl K. (inredbird):
Raymond Feist! Magician: Apprentice is a classic.

C. S. LEWIS- THAT HIDEOUS STRENGTH AND E.R. EDDISON- THE WORM OROBOROS

Comment added 8/9/11 by Jennifer (JJDesigns):
The Weather Warden Series by Rachel Caine.

Comment added 8/7/11 by A. M. (bibliochild) - :
God idea for a list! For Discworld novels, I like to start new readers with "Wyrd Sisters" or "Guards! Guards!" rather than the first books (which IMO are not as strong as the later ones).

Comment added 7/9/11 by Leigh K.:
The Mirror of Her Dreams and A Man Rides Through by Stephen Donaldson?

Comment added 7/3/11 by Wendeline (onebooknerd):
Terry Brooks Shannara series is a must for the beginner and those of us who enjoy a good fantasy!

Comment added 6/2/11 by Muzaffer T.:
City of the Beast by Isabel Allende

Comment added 5/19/11 by Carolyn F. (seeford) - :
Nice list, but some of the books on here are definitely SF (Acorna, Souls in the Great Machine, Catalyst), and plenty of these are *not* what I would consider 'Beginner' Fantasy (Beauty, Kushiel's Dart, Wicked, Daughter of the Blood). Please edit!

Comment added 5/17/11 by Elizabeth W. (ewhittaker):
A suggestion for added first series would be Innocent Mage/Awakened Mage by Karen Miller and Aurian by Maggie Furey.

Comment added 4/20/11 by Tyler E. (carpenterbob):
what about Dune ?!?!?!?!

Comment added 4/14/11 by Carl H.:
Check out Brom's Child Theif

Comment added 3/24/11 by R E K. (bigstone) - , :
Where is Barbara Hambly? Wonderful fantasy books! Add the Windrose Trilogy please.

Comment added 2/5/11 by Kathleen R.:
Did I miss Lord Foul's Bane, by Stephen R. Donaldson? I saw some others of the series, but when talking about "where to start in fantasy" this should be there. It's the 1st book in the original series of The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever.

Comment added 2/2/11 by Kath M. (polarbear790):
Tamora Pierce

Comment added 2/2/11 by Kath M. (polarbear790):
The Golden Compass by Pullman [did I miss it?]. Anne McCaffrey, Dragons of Pern series, starting with Dragonflight. You say it is sci fi, but you never see a bolt or spaceship until about 20 books in.

Comment added 1/25/11 by Diana L. (zzonielady):
The Mortal Instruments Series: City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass by Cassandra Clare should also be on this list. She creates a unique society of Downworlders (werewolfes, vampires, wizards etc) and Shadowhunters.

Comment added 1/20/11 by Dawn T. (dawnevirestorm):
City of Dreaming Bks is not the typical fantasy of waring magic realms(though I like them too.),but is a world I think most of us may enjoy visiting. It is a real fun read.

Comment added 1/20/11 by Dawn T. (dawnevirestorm):
I had to add The City of Dreaming Bks for all of you to consider. This is the fantasy for book lovers. It has a bit of a morbid cast to it but not overpoweringly so.Also made me LOL.It is very clever&full of litiary riddles for U to solve.Safe4youth also.

Weaveworld by Clive Barker should be on this list too. It is an amazing fantasy story.

Comment added 12/29/10 by Lauren S. (mollyrawr):
Add Lilith's Brood by Octavia Butler. This was my first sci-fi/fantasy novel and it made me fall in love with the genre.

Comment added 12/23/10 by Sherri R.:
Add Green Rider by Kristen Britain, Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind, Lord of the Isles by David Drake, I also agree with Barbara that Arrows of the Queen should replace Take a Thief by Mercedes Lackey. Great list, Thanks!

Comment added 12/12/10 by Janet J. (arodhwen) - :
Fablehaven by Brandon Mull and So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane are fan-freaking-tastic. (Both are the first books in a series.)

Comment added 11/30/10 by Barbara B. (catbookmom):
Better to start M Lackey's Valdemar series with Arrows of the Queen, Winds of Fate or By the Sword, not Take a Thief. Agree that Alanna is the best book to start the Tamora Pierce series.

Comment added 11/9/10 by Elizabeth P. (dreamsleeper):
Added Stephen R. Donaldson, one of the first fantasy books I read in my early teens. Enjoyed the whole series.

Comment added 11/8/10 by Jillian Z. (zarzanagrl):
whoot! for Mercedes Lackey!

Add the green rider, it kept me hopping

Comment added 11/3/10 by zfool - , :
I just added Otherland by Tad Williams. While it does kind of fall into the SciFi genre, I think it could also be called Fantasy. Great read!!

Comment added 11/2/10 by Matthew B.:
I would add all of the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. EPIC!!!!

Comment added 10/27/10 by Alicia J. (breena31) - :
I would add The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge. Excellent world building, characters, etc.

Comment added 10/24/10 by wolflvr8 - , :
Through Wolf's Eyes by Jane Lindskold. I really enjoyed this book as well as all the others in the series.

Comment added 10/22/10 by Diane H. (diajoh):
Also add The Well at the World's End by William Morris (1896, republished in the 1970s). This is now obscure, but it's a fascinating read. Morris was also a well-known artist.

Comment added 10/8/10 by Kate D. (usuallee):
Great lsit, I wantto read some of these....but what about some love for Lloyd Alexander? His Prydain series was my fave series as a kid, and now rereading them as an adult there,s so much depth and nuance I missed back then, must read for any fantasy fan.

Comment added 10/6/10 by nasanta:
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. I first read it when I was in elementary school, and thought it was very good. Also, The Last Dragonlord by Joanne Bertin, and The Green Rider by Kristen Britain are both enjoyable debut novels.

Comment added 8/24/10 by Chris T. (chrisandtim):
I recently discovered Garth Nix, an Australian fantasy author whose books have been somewhat difficult for me to find in US book stores. The Abhorsen trilogy seems to be the easiest to find, but I also enjoyed the Keys to the Kingdom series.

Comment added 8/20/10 by Justine C. (serialreader) - , :
I love Tamora Pierce, but Wolf-Speaker is not the one to start with. It's in the middle of the books chronologically. The best one to start with is 'Alanna: The First Adventure'. Alanna will eventually meet Daine. Love your list!

Comment added 8/17/10 by Ali Y. (greatdanechick):
Howl's Moving Castle sounds good, I've never heard of it! I'm adding it to my TBR pile!

Comment added 8/16/10 by Jimmy S.:
Joe Abercrombie's "The First Law" series. Book 1 is The Blade Itself. Great books.

Comment added 8/13/10 by Nicholette (voraciousbookworm) - , :
Good list, I think I have almost all of them on my shelves. But did I overlook Anne McCaffery, Alan Dean Foster, Piers Anthony, Christopher Stafsheff, Andre Norton, Tanith Lee, and Tanya Huff or do they need to be added?

Comment added 7/28/10 by Terra B. (terboz):
Sorry had to add another. One of my all time favorites The Deed for Paksinarrion. Just talking about it makes me itch to pull it out for another reread!

Comment added 7/28/10 by Terra B. (terboz):
You cannot leave out Mercedes Lackey. Any of her series would do for fantasy beginner or veteran!!

Comment added 7/24/10 by Emily B. (LibraryEm42):
Added Graceling and Zahrah the Windseeker - and whoops, just realized I should add Un Lun Dun (a nice, accessible Mieville book).

Comment added 7/24/10 by Jacqueline M. (Jacqueline):
My first exposure to fantasy was A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle, at 7 years old. I'm still reading fantasy at 57.

Comment added 7/21/10 by Lisa A. (NeedyBookLover) - :
Had to add Ariel . . .

Comment added 7/19/10 by PhoenixFalls - , :
Danielle -- Feel free! I just started the list with the titles I've read myself (which does not include anything by Friedman) -- I made it open so everyone else could post their recommendations!

Comment added 7/13/10 by Danielle H. (a-keeper):
I'd add Black Sun Rising by C. S. Friedman. I thought that trilogy was great.

Comment added 7/11/10 by PhoenixFalls - , :
Denise -- absolutely anyone can add to this list; I've never read Lynn Flewelling (forget how to spell her name!) so I didn't add her myself. Just please limit your additions to one book per author!

Comment added 7/11/10 by Denise B. (hillcountrygirl) - , :
Can anyone just add to this list? I don't see the Bone Doll Twin trilogy, it's one of my favorites.

Comment added 7/6/10 by PhoenixFalls - , :
Karen -- Feel free to add the Chronicles of Amber! (Haven't read it myself) Michelle -- Keep in mind, this is a list of where people should start with certain authors. . . not necessarily a list of the best book to turn someone on to fantasy. Some author

Comment added 7/6/10 by Michelle G. (mikeylou) - , :
I would have to agree that Transformation is very deep, although good, it may be too much for a beginner. Anne Bishop and Jacqueline Carey also write very dark, very good fantasy that beginners may not enjoy. A lot of my adds are from when I was in HS a

Comment added 7/6/10 by Michelle G. (mikeylou) - , :
I added some of my favorite fantasy starters. Incidentally, one of my first fantasy reads was The Dragonbone Chair, out of my English teacher's books for book reports box. She didn't want to let me use the book b/c it "wasn't supposed to be in there".

Comment added 7/6/10 by Karen E. (thebakerswife) - , :
How about the Chronicles of Amber?

Comment added 7/5/10 by PhoenixFalls - , :
Tom-- I consider Pern science fiction (yes, it's pretending to be fantasy, but it's made clear from the start that the dragons are bio-engineered aliens and they're a lost colony from Earth). I think I included it on the SF list. . . if not, I will add it

Comment added 7/5/10 by Tom G. (tom8021):
I think that Anne McCaffrey, Dragons of Pern series is a good beginning book. I am trying to read the series for the last twenty years. I pick one up when I want something light. Also Terry Brooks Shanara series is good too.

Comment added 7/5/10 by Melanti:
The Eyre Affair as being top of the field? Really? I guess I just don't get what the hype is about on this book. The idea is fantastic, but I thought the execution of it left a lot to be desired.

Comment added 7/4/10 by PhoenixFalls - , :
Oh and thanks for the Gemmel rec! I've never tried him at all. . .

Comment added 7/4/10 by PhoenixFalls - , :
You think? I'll admit, I haven't read all of Berg's work. . . but of the stuff I've read by her it was the most involving (which is something I always consider essential in a first attempt at an author). What title would you suggest?

Comment added 7/4/10 by Tom G. (tom8021):
Transformation by Carol Berg might be too heady for a beginner?
