I have never read Francine Rivers before so I didn't know what to expect. This book was amazing. Taking place during the California Gold Rush, it is the story of Sarah (Angel) who has lived a terrible life for her 18 years, living as a prostitute in a poor, scrappy frontier town and Michael Hosea the man who sees her in the street and is determined to make her his wife. He rescues her from a brothel after she is beaten and restores her back to health physically but finds it impossible to heal her spirit. She plays tug of war with Michael and God until the very end. I read this book in two days and wish I had slowed down. It is based on the story of Hosea in the Bible. The story displays God's powerful love for his people and the struggle Angel and Michael go through when they don't want to listen to Him.

This is an incredible book. The whole story is an awesome picture of God's redeeming love for all of us. Even after finishing the book, I'm still thinking about it and can't get it off my mind. One word of caution: You may want to skip reading the Prologue of this book if you are sensitive in nature. The Prologue tells you how the main character, Angel, became the way she is, but you don't have to read the Prologue to understand the rest of the book.

The beginning of this book is very dark and hard to read. The main character is subjected to one heartache after another and then abused in ways that are unimaginable to most.

The book then skips ahead in time and meets up with the character who is now older, jaded, and hopeless. In the midst of this, her hero enters the scene and a overblown and completely unrealistic romance novel begins.

Other characters enter the book. Some show love and others continue to victimize her. Two of these new characters, one "good" girl falls in love with the man who continued to victimize the main character. Here is where I gave up on the book. I finished reading it because it was a book that my book club was reading, so I made it to the melodramatic end that was only fit for a cheap romance novel.

While this book may bear the title "Redeeming Love", there was nothing that I loved about it and it possessed little redemptive value.

SHORT REVIEW:This was a fantastic book, but a word of caution: this book is not for teenagers, for anyone who struggles with lust, or for anyone who does not wish to be exposed to some very mature sexual concepts. While the book is not graphic, it is mature. Exercise discernment.
LONGER REVIEW:The book has been heralded as wonderful - as it is - but it contains some very mature subject matter, mostly sexual.
I would not recommend this book for a teenager, for someone who is unmarried, or who wouldn't wish to be exposed to mature sexual concepts. Like the actual book of Hosea, it does deal with prostitution - but becomes more descriptive. It deals with marriage - including the intimate aspects. And there is more than one instance of rape, pedophilia, etc. Evil and wickedness is not at all celebrated, and I wouldn't even say that it is gratuitous, but it isn't "glossed over" either.
This is a book that should be approached with discernment - and a thorough biblical understanding. It is not at all a replacement for the healing counsel of the Holy Spirit. There is also a risk of idolizing the main male protagonist, and feeling disappointed with "real men," just as many romance novels tend to create expectations near-perfection in our minds.
Again, this book is wonderful. The allegory for Christ's role as our kinsman-redeemer, as our faithful lover, is beautiful. The characters' thought processes are real, and familiar. But it should be approached with wisdom, and again, biblical understanding.

I absolutely loved this book. The story is amazing. A story of true love, kindness, patience, heartache, conflict, pain, selfishness, self-hate, redemption, acceptance and overcoming. In the beginning we learn that Angel is a prostitute and a man who loves the Lord falls in love with her and through a series of events makes her his wife. I couldn't put this book down. I started it one Saturday afternoon when my daughter was sick and I couldn't put it down. This is a must read!

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read (and I usually hate Christian fiction). It is a retelling of the Hosea story in the Bible--but set during the Gold Rush. Sounds weird, I know. I was reluctant to buy the premise as well. However, it just works and I cried my way through the book. Fantastic. Highly recommended.

I read this book the first time in three days. I could NOT put it down! I was surprised by the honesty with which the prostitute's experiences were portrayed. I found it gratifying to find such honesty in a Christian novel. Francine Rivers is frank about sin and also about it's resolution. She's a brilliant writer, and this is a beautiful novel. I also HIGHLY recommend her "Mark Of The Lion" series.

This novel and _Leota's Garden_ tie for the best Francine Rivers' novels (IMO). Historical fiction set during the California gold rush, this novel is a "modern" retelling of the Gomer and Hosea story ... Angel was sold into prostitution as a child and Micheal Hosea is a man of God who wishes to redeem her. Great romance, lots of conflict (internal and external) within the characters and between the characters.

One of my new favorite books, but i'm willing to part with it to pass the story on to others. It is based on the story of Hosea in the bible, so not one for the faint of heart. Takes place in California's gold rush era in 1850. Great detail to scenery and story line, really made me feel like I was there while I was reading it.

In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850 and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns to love him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best.

LOVE it! Love it! I am not a huge book reader, especially 'love stories'. This book is captivating...hard to put down, even from the first chapter. I read the whole thing in just a metter of days...and I passed it on to my Mom who read it in just a couple days.
A definite must-read for a woman who wants to better understand how God can unconditionally love us. (Parallels the book of Hosea in the Bible)
Not a read for younger persons as it deals with some older themematic elements, but not in a perverted, worldy way.

Thank you Francine Rivers for sharing your gift of writing with the rest of us!

Fantastic book! A story of a woman who believes herself unworthy of love due to her terrible childhood experiences. The first chapter grabs the reader's attention but is difficult emotionally to read. The book continues to get better as the story progresses! The writing is great, the characters and setting are realistically written, and the story line keeps the reader involved right up to the end.

Christian fiction at it's best! Francine Rivers paints a real picture of our broken world as well as the brokeness in ourselves in her retelling of the book of Hosea. Yet through that brokeness God is always at work for "his beloveds." It has inspired me to pick up my bible and read the book of Hosea for myself. I will definitely be reading more by this author.

This was my first foray into Christian Fiction. I had it sitting on my bookshelf for a while, but it just didn't appeal to me based on the cover. Well, it's true, don't judge a book by it's cover!

Redeeming Love is the story of Angel...or Amanda or Tirzah or Sarah depending on which point in the story you are. It takes place during the California Gold Rush. Angel is a prostitute in a town in California when Micheal Hosea sees her in the street and is determined to make her his wife. Quite an unlikely scenario given he is a good Christian farmer and she lives in a brothel.

The story takes you back and shows you how Angel ended up where she is. She had a horrific childhood that I just can't imagine. But Angel does not give up this life easily. She is determined at first that all she is is a prostitute. She runs away from Michael's farm multiple times. She causes a rift between Michael and his brother-in-law. Her heart is hardened and she is determined to not let anyone in.

Michael loves her and stands by her and rescues her time and time again despite her resistance towards him. It is a great story that is reflective of the kind of love everyone is searching for. The kind of love that doesn't judge and accepts you completely.

It is a great story with lots of twists and turns along the way. At some points I found myself frustrated because I thought their love for each other was too much. But the story sucks you in and just when you think things are getting wrapped up, the author throws another twist in there.

I highly recommend this book even if you aren't a Christian. I don't think it is too "preachy" and either way it is a great story that is sure to get you hooked.

I consider this among my top five favorite books I've ever read, and as a former English teacher and a school librarian for 15 years, that's saying something. The story of Hosea and Gomer set in goldrush America makes for a beautiful love story. I love everything Francine Rivers has written, but this is by far my all-time favorite. You don't have to know the Biblical basis for this story to appreciate it, but knowing that story makes it even more interesting.

A Story of Love That Won't Let Go - No Matter What!

Californias gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.

Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.

Then she meets Michael Hosea, a man who seeks his Fathers heart in everything. Michael obeys Gods call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angels every bitter expectation, until despite her resistance, her frozen heart begins to thaw.

I have this copy and the newer revised version. This copy was the first Christian book she had done since becoming a believer. Because she was a romance writer before she was saved some of the words in the edition are a little choicy (if that's a word). However, this is my all time favorite book.

I give this book (the revised edition) to all the girls I know that are graduating. I have also passed this on to my two daughter in laws since coming in the family. One has read it 5 times and the other has told me she cried (I'm sure they both did). My own daughter received a copy last year, 2012, for her very own.

Wonderful, Wonderful Book! This is my all time favorite book. I am in love with this story! Fantastic!!!

Plot: This book is loosely based on the Bible story of Hosea. It shows one mans undying love for his wife, and mirrors the unabated love of God for His children.

Characters: From the very first words, until the very last, you follow Angel on a journey to find herself, God, and what it truly means to love and be loved. You see into her soul and you feel her pain and her joy. You see her character evolve into what she never thought she would ever be able to become

Themes: There are two equally important themes in this book; love and forgiveness. Throughout the book, Angel had to learn both. She had to learn how to love and be loved by both her husband and God. She also had to learn to accept the forgiveness offered to her by both.

Emotion: From page one, this book drips with emotion. You feel every emotion that Angel feels. You can feel the emotion of Michael as well. From his desire for his wife, to the pain he feels when she leaves. Every last emotion jumps off the pages and lands right into the heart of the reader.

Overall: This book leaves you enraptured from the very beginning. You are left sucked in to Angel's life as a child and the tragedy that sends her on a downward spiral. It's a hard book to put to down. You're left thinking about the story even when you're not reading it. And you can even begin to see traces of it in your own life.

This is my ALL-TIME favorite book EVER. I am not a fan of fiction books but i could NOT put this book down BOTH times I read it (i just started reading a third time). WOW. As I read this book I saw within the lead character sooo many girls and women that I know. So many women who have been sexually abused and thought that they have no value. So many girls who believe that they are "dead" inside and don't deserve to be happy. So many girls who have been abused and now see sex as a way to control or have power over men. I cried for this girl in the story who represents SO many women that i know. It reminded me to give GRACE towards women who prostitute themselves whether they are not out right being paid or not - women use sex to get things they want - attention, money, nice things. These women - what has happened in their lives to get them to that point? What has happened to them to make them so numb to this? This book tells the story of one girl and the man who set out to love her regardless of her past. Its the story of the book of Hosea in the Bible but told during the gold rush era. God tells this man that she - this prostitute - is to be his wife. This man has saved himself for his wife only to find out the woman he has been saving himself for has been with hundreds of men. But he loves HER anyway. Not her body... HER. He seeks after her, he redeems her from that life, and he seeks out to love her unconditionally. Just as Christ continually seeks after us no matter how many times we walk away. Every woman was once that little girl who was hurt and abused... but every woman is a child of the king and deserves to be treated as such.

I must be the only person who hated this book. I found it to be poorly written and blatantly plagiarized. Half of the characters are directly lifted from Steinbeck's "East of Eden." The whole Godly-man-loves-self loathing-hooker thing was done better in a sappy LaVyrle Spencer book. Parts of it even reminded me of the old John Wayne movie "North to Alaska" right down to the names. Overall, a load of unimaginative, unoriginal, boring crap that would only appeal to you if you actually watch Lifetime movies... Blech. Go check out "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" while you're at it.

I read the "redeemed" version, and I couldn't really get into it. Somehow, the characters didn't seem real. They seemed...stiff. It wasn't until later that I realized that there was an original version. I managed to find a copy, and WOW! It has become my favorite book. It is the same story, but somehow it seems so different. I did like this book, but perhaps my expectations were just too high because it was a little dissapointing for me. I expected a more realistic story. I like Christian literature, but I want it the characters to be "real" and Michael Hosea, in my opinion, was not. Nor was the Altman family. A little too perfect, a little too charmed, a little too . . . .ideal.

Not quite the book I expected. Time would have been better spent with another.

Such an amazing book. Some pieces are a bit harsh, and hard to read, but life isn't always so happy either. It shows some of the worst things that can happen to a person, but also how no matter what's been done to or by you, God still has "redeeming love." It took me a while to decide to post it, and I only do so to help spread this to others. This also got me interested in the story of Hosea and Gomer and brought it much more to life in my eyes.. All in all, a wonderful book, that any Christian, or believer struggling with their past should most definately read. Powerful!!!!! <3<3<3

O...MG! The book Redeeming Love isindescribable. Its on a shelf all by itself. I never thought I would read a Christian love story and say it was one of the best books I ever read, I need smut and alphas mixed with a little emotional angst and then more smut and that is a good book or even a great book to me. RL had zero smut although definitely adult themes such as rape, prostitution, adultery. The hero Michael was godlike with a gentle forgiving heart, no rake-like qualities in sight. There definitely was lots of emotional heartbreaks, by page 40 my chest ached from the huge lump in my throat, I had no idea how I was going to get through the next 430 pages, but the story is so incredible and inspirational that it will stick with me for a long, long time. It was thought provoking, heart wrenching, and deeply moving.

The heroine, Angel, went by many names throughout the story depending on her reactions to her life events and trials. Angel has a life that is worse than hell, her father wishes she was aborted, her mother dies at a young age causing Angel to be sold into prostitution at the age of 8. She is so degraded, she rejects God, feels she is an empty shell and wants to die by the age of 18. Enter Michael, a human angel, sent to her by God to give Angel his unconditional love, marry her and show her the way back home. He was so perfect that every time Angel made a stupid decision you wished you could shake some sense into her because Michael loved her so passionately and didnt deserve all the pain Angel caused him.

Though it is a religious story and there are a lot of references to the bible I did not feel it was preachy, just tender and beautiful. The last 50 pages did get a little deeper in the religious undertones, but I was okay with it because the moral of the story was so great and uplifting. I cant recommend this book enough, dont let the Christian theme turn you off, and this is coming from a person who loves erotica and bodice rippers.

I was so riveted by this story, I could not put the book down until I had read it entirely. The plots, characters, etc. are so wonderful. This book has given me a different outlook on people in my life, myself and also a deeper appreciation for the unconditional love of God.

Francine Rivers took timeless bibical themes and beautifully portrayed them and brought to life these unforgettable characters. Formost, she portrayed the unconditional love of God. This is truly a powerful work.

This book is the best, and most thought-provoking, book I have ever read. I recommend it to both male and female readers, no matter what their preference for genre. This is a beautifully-written book, and it has a most profound effect on all those I know who have read it. I have a friend who was so enamored of this book that she read it three times, one right after the other, and has since read it again.

The storyline would be beautiful as a standalone, but interwoven, as it is, with deep symbolism makes this a book you will never forget - nor will you wish to. This book will forever sit at the top of my "keeper" shelf. I have an extra copy which I will loan out to others.

I don't like romance novels and I'm still unsure why I even cracked opened Redeeming Love, especially with a title like that, let alone continue reading but I found it to be a beautiful book and well worth the read. Its set in the 1850's and based loosely on the biblical book of Hosea.

The novel follows a young girl as she grows from small child to adult. Her father hated her before she was born and left her and her mother - her father's mistress, to fend for themselves in a cruel and unwelcoming society. That pain carried throughout the heroine's life; she was sold into child prostitution and subsequently into her marriage.

If you're open to it youll go on a journey that delves into pain, loss, guilt, forgiveness, finding oneself, and the heartache that can come from judging others.

I was captivated from the beginning and couldn't put it down. The book cover might be corny yet the story itself was anything but. I was definitely moved, so much so that I still think about it days after finishing the last page.

Caution, not your typical Christian fiction. I loved it despite myself. This is a retelling of the book of Hosea, set in the Old West, with the prostitute as the central figure and narrator. There are scenes that still make me blush.

This was by far the BEST book I've ever read!! Even if I wasn't a Christian I am sure I would still love this book. I put off reading this book (due to the size) for months, even after it was recommended to me by several different people. Then after I finished reading it I found I was still wishing their was more!! Not bad when you consider this is a pretty large book (at least for me) What a Beautiful repesentation of a story from the Bible! Highly recommend!

I'm 14 and I LOVED this book. It brought out so many good points that I had never thought about before. I was enthralled by Michael's devotion to Angel, but especially to God. Michael did so much for Angel, but he still put God before her. "Redeeming Love" may be fiction, but there are many lessons that can be easily applied to life today.

I just love this authors writing. She makes the bible come alive so vividly, while telling these amazing stories that pull you in and break you down, make you cry, make you look inside yourself and turn to God, and then build you back up again. This particulary story tells an amazing tale about a young women who has survived unspeakable horrors and gets an unconditional chance at love and redemption, ultimately bringing a sense of hope.

This is by far one of the most amazing books I've ever read! The horror and tragedy suffered in the life of the main character since she was a small child will leave you in tears. You heart will ache for the evil that she endured, and then continues to allow herself to experience due to her lack of self worth. Even more amazing is the true love that is offered to her and the incredible second chance that she is given. I have given a copy of this book to every incredible woman in my life ~ my grandmother, my mom, my sister, and my girlfriends! This story has changed our lives! This is a fictionalized"retelling" of the story of Hosea and Gomer from the bible. It's a beautiful love story reset in the west during the Gold Rush.At times it seems to go a little slowly but the story itself and most of the people you meet in the book are well worth the read. There are parts that are not pleasant to read, peoples inhuman treatment of others etc. but not done for shock value, but rather that's how it happened to many.I would recommend it to friends .... in fact I did. Our Book Club is reading it this month and from the feedback I've heard from friends they love it.

If you haven't read it yet.....What are you waiting for? The author did a wonderful job in making an old story new and relevant. If you're not familiar with Hosea then I suggest you sit and read that book first. I highly recommend this book and I hope all of you who read them enjoy them as much as I did. "Redeeming Love" is a story of restoration and forgiveness -- the kind that has to take place not only on a spiritual level, but also on an intrapersonal level and within one's self. It's also a lesson on judgment.

Note that this edition is what the editor refers to as the redeemed edition, and much of the sex has been removed. So do not be turned off by reviews that refer to this book as pure smut.

I rarely give a book 5 stars, but this one held my interest so much and I love it so much it gets all 5. This Christian fiction novel is meant to parallel (in many ways) the book of Hosea in the Bible. It's a story about a man who marries a prostitute and remains faithful (in spite of incredible odds) to helping her heal from the damaging things that have been done to her - from childhood on. The twists and turns it takes never cease to astound. It's heartbreaking, insightful, and inspiring. This story is a beautiful analogy of all that we're told in scripture about God's capacity for forgiveness and His desire to redeem the broken and lost. I highly recommend this book. My only caveat is that it may feel a little too obvious to some readers in its Christian message - and that is likely to come across as preachy to some. While that kind of book normally turns me off and costs a star in my rating, this one gets a star for tackling a tremendously tough subject - not because others haven't tackled it, but because it is honest, brutal, and yet treats its characters with dignity. Christians are seen as the falable people they are, and yet they are also the instruments that bring healing to a broken woman who is incapable of saving herself from her past (incapable because of what has been done to her from a very young age). I suspect if you can read the "Christian-speak" in the context of real people living out their faith (as opposed to thinking it is preaching at you), the story will very possibly mesmerize you as I did me.

I didn't realize that Rivers published a cleaned up version of this story. In reading other reviews I'm pretty sure this one is not the "redeemed" or cleaned-up version. While I wouldn't recommend this version to a teen (necessarily) I whole-heartedly recommend this version to a mature reader. It is the tough subject matter and exposure of dark and damaging things that makes this story what it is - a book about redemption.
