I so badly wanted to like this book, but I couldn't finish it. As he warns you at the beginning, Trebek enjoys using foul language. Four-letter words are sprinkled liberally throughout. I couldn't reconcile the gentleman I saw on television with the trash-talking one in this book.

Crazy lady raises a coyote pup expecting that she can keep the wolf away if only she pours enough time, energy and love into the relationship. And she justifies it by posting it online, to the cheers and adulation of social media. I read wondering not whether the coyote would survive, but whether she would. Finished it feeling disappointed.

This book has received many accolades and it stands up to them all. More than a thousand pages and I didn't want to reach the end. Previously I had known Grant mainly as a Civil War hero, but in reading this biography I found it even more riveting to learn the responsibilities thrust on President Grant as he had to put the nation back together post Civil War. The mind and heart of this man equalled or exceeded Washington's and Lincoln's.

This book is my first choice when reading aloud a Nativity story to the kindergartners in our Lutheran school. It is told from the perspective of a sassy, self-centered camel whose heart softens and fills with love at the sight of the Christ Child. It is a humorous story up until you are nearly moved to tears at its tender, poignant ending. As a bonus, the illustrations are outstanding. Highly recommend. NOTE: My review is for the paperback book. I see the one I've reviewed here is a board book, which likely is abridged and may not be as good (but I hope it is).

The wonderful news that this book delivers is a bit tarnished now that this celebrity pastor has been removed by his megachurch from the pulpit. I'd advise anyone contemplating reading this book to first research the author.

This book is described as a modern retelling of the Parable of the Prodigal Son; however, this is subtle and does not "ruin" a complex plot. Music lovers and guitar players will enjoy the author's knowledge and descriptions of guitars, songwriting and the music industry. There is a scene about three-fourths into the storyline that is dubious, but it's my chief complaint. Also, the main character interacts with an "angel-like" being (though he is never plainly identified as an angel) that would not stand up to biblical scrutiny. Otherwise, this is a good book for its excellent writing and likeable characters.

Read the Bible like a Lutheran with this edition that centers on Jesus Christ by identifying passages that either point to him or reveal him. You will come to see how the Bible is not many stories but ONE story; it's all about Jesus.

If you love Max Lucado's inspirational writings, you will enjoy this book, his first attempt at a novel. It centers on a coffee shop that draws crowds of people to what apparently is its wireless connection to God. I enjoyed the charming characters, particularly guardian angel Manny. Just don't expect a deep theological message; instead, this is a light and delightful read.

Tedd Arnold is known for his "Parts" series of books but I think this one is even funnier and more creative. It's about a boy who sails his bathtub in a flood that cascades from the top to bottom of his apartment building. At every floor along the way, he meets neighbors who are swept up in the current and sail along on various objects (including a potty chair). As the list of names grows longer on every page, the chaos includes putting out an apartment fire. Our boy is a hero by the time he gets to the street! The rhyming text is delightful and the illustrations -- in true Tedd Arnold style -- are bursting with color and action. Every time I read this book I see something new. It's a "read again" for both kids and adults, and that's the best kind of children's book.

Great read on many levels. First, for the author's efforts to track these elusive owls and deal with frustrations related to imperfect tracking technology. Second, for his descriptions of the wildlife, nature, and weather in this remote area of Russia. Finally, and most unexpectedly and yet very enjoyable, for his adventures being immersed into the local culture and adjusting to rustic living conditions. It was much more of a travelogue than I anticipated.

Caution, not your typical Christian fiction. I loved it despite myself. This is a retelling of the book of Hosea, set in the Old West, with the prostitute as the central figure and narrator. There are scenes that still make me blush.

The author's determination to succeed as a steelworker is admirable and has the reader cheering her on -- when you are not fearing for her life. It's a raw look at the inside of a modern steel mill and the potential dangers that workers still face on a daily basis.

This book is eye opening and even frightening. It describes how China's Communist government controls and silences its citizenry through strategies such as public shaming. The goal is to get people to police themselves, their families, and their neighbors, so that the government gets maximum impact with the least effort. Technology has made it easier for surveillance and for the imposition of consequences, i.e., "bad" behavior ends vacation plans because you can't buy plane tickets or reserve a hotel room. This is a book that will have you appreciating freedoms you didn't even realize that you could lose under a repressive government.
