Since other people have given a synopsis of the book I want to tell you how a reader might react. It is a Good book. The writing style is different than what I've usually found in this genre, but that's not a bad thing at all. There are books that are good and even though you still can predict a little of what is/will be happening they are books you give a positive review. There were three spots in which my mouth just fell open -- and the friend I was sitting beside said:
1. The characters can't hear you talk back to them.
2. Do you realize how dumbstruck you look?
It's nice to find a book that can knock you for a loop in a wonderful way.
Having read as many books as I have (thousands), and in so many different genres, it took talent to throw me that much. But the twists in the plot worked well, very well.

This was the first time I had ever read a Lisa Gardner book and afterward, I was hooked! She captures the deception of the killer, the determination and fear of the wife, and the hard work of the police and others involved in the plot of the story.
I have had to then purchase every book she has written thus far and read them as well and I am happy to say that none of them have been a disappointment.

Lisa Gardner writes a very good procedural novel which her lengthy acknowledgements pages make clear is due in part to a great deal of research of at least the interviewing variety. Couple that with a skill at wrenching every conceivable emotion out of her characters and you have a roller-coaster experience and then some. The only flaw here is that some situations are just a litle contrived.

Once I started reading, I couldn't put this book down. Something was continually happening and made me want to keep reading to see what was next. A good procedural and it also delves into the lives of the people involved in tracking the serial killer and attempting to stop him before he is able to achieve his ultimate goal.

Lisa Gardner's thriller debut is an impressive one. Young bride Tess weds a local cop, who quickly turns abusive. When she suspects that her husband Jim Beckett may be responsible for a series of violent murders, she goes to the police for help. The police apprehend her husband as he makes an attempt on Tess' life, but after Beckett escapes from prison she knows that she and her young daughter will not be safe until her husband is dead.
Tess turns to a former marine turned burned out mercenary in hopes of learning the gun and combat skills necessary to protect herself. In Iris Johansen fashion, her story melts the heart of the hardened soldier, and he becomes her protector as she and the police hunt down Beckett.
While the plot suggests that this book will be typical thriller fare, Gardner's writing makes it stand out from similar books. She finds a good balance between making sure the action does not let up, while still allowing the reader to get to know and understand her characters. The major players all have interesting back stories, and Jim Beckett is very, very scary. Gardner distinguishes herself from other romantic suspense authors such as Mariah Stewart by not shying away from violent scenes and grisly descriptions of killing. If you are a Karin Slaughter fan you will likely become a Lisa Gardner fan too after reading The Perfect Husband.

To me The perfect husband was a perfect book. It had non stop action, the plot was awesome and it was awesome in the fact that it let you know who the monster was at heart. I think the "scenery" depicted of the serial killer was just as important as the good points of the book. The violence just showed you the personality of the antagonist and in most boooks you don't get to know the antagonist that well. I think her descriptions of bloodshed brought the killer alive. It's my favorite out of all the books I've read so far. Not because of the violence but because of the honesty and realistic nature of the killer. It was like she painted a potrait of not only one person but everyone involved with the killer over shadowing everyone else. I absolutely love this book. Kind of like the movie the Dark Knight. I loved it because of the personality it brought to the Joker. The perfect husband does the exact same thing with it's antagonist. Easily my favorite novel by her so far. Now I'm reading the Survivor's club.

This is my first Lisa Gardner novel, and I have to say I'm impressed. Others have given a synopsis, so I'll tell you what I think makes this novel different from others in this particular genre. I like that there's a little gore but not an over-the-top description of exactly what takes place. Very suspenseful and the shock factor was there for me. A really good action packed thrill ride. I'm just glad there wasn't a step by step of the killer's actions. I hate that--I want mystery not horror! Thanks Lisa keep em' coming!

Throughout this book I felt very confused. After I read the back of the book and ordered it, I was under the impression this was another thriller by Lisa Gardner. As I kept reading, it felt more of a romance novel with mystery thrown in. The first 200 pages or so seemed like nothing but feuding and sexual tension between The main characters, J.T. Tess and Marion. I almost stopped reading because I am not a fan of romance novels. The book did finally kick in with the mystery and thriller part but I was so let down that I only finished the book because I had already read so much.

After a lifetime of fear, Tess will do something she's never done before. With the help of burned-out ex-marine, J.T. Dillon and FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, she's going to fight back. Really enjoyed the book, looking forward to the second.
I'm sorry to say I was disappointed with the plot. I need to read of characters in a book that are somewhat based on reality; some of these chacters almost had a comic-book "super hero" aspect to them. Perhaps if I had finished the book, I might have changed my opinion, but I lost interest.

A non-stop, page-turner of a suspense novel. It is not a who-done-it, since you know who the killer is right from the start. Even with revealing who the bad guy is from the beginning, Garder still manages to throw in a few surprises. I am not a big fan of serial killer books, but I could not put this one down. Excellent writing, excellent charaters.
Where I did enjoy the hero and heroine, and their scenes DID jump off the pages, I found the scenes following Jim, the antagonist, as well as the officers following the case disgustingly overboard and slow respectively.
Oddly enough, too much of the violence left me skipping the grotesqueness half way through the read and I didn't miss any plot. I still knew enough of what happened through the characters reiterating memories or whatnot to finish the book.
My first Lisa Gardner book. Yes, I'll read another. I just hope she doesn't feel compelled to "show" in such graphic detail, her antagonists work. Ugh.

Good book, kept me interested from the very beginning.
I enjoyed the storyline but deducted points for the explicit sexual content. Otherwise it's a good suspense story.

Started slow, but picked up. It was a good, suspenseful book!! I will read number 2.
Excellent book! Crazed psychopathic serial killer targets the person who turned him in .. his wife. I have enjoyed all Gardner's books ...I thought this one was exceptional!
Not her best work but still a good read.
Naive Tess married a decorated cop, thinking he was her savior from an abusive, controlling father. With no comparison, and a two year old daughter to think of, she assumes her flawed marriage is 'normal.'When it becomes painfully obvious her cunning husband is a serial killer, she helps put him behind bars. When he escapes, Tess needs to overcome a lifetime of fear to protect herself and her daughter. She enlists the help of a burned out marine turned mercinary to teach her survival skills, but he has baggage of his own, too. And her husband still has an agenda, and revenge is part of it.
The book is gripping, from start to finish.

After a lifetime of fear, Tess will do something she's never done before. With the help of burned out ex-marine JT Dillon and FBI profiler Pierce Quincey, she's going to fight back. As the largest manhunt four states have ever seen mobilize to catch Beckett, the clock winds down on a terrifying reunion between husband and wife. And Tess knows that this time, her only choices are to kill -- or be killed.
Why I liked it: It was bad as far as thrillers go. I like the concept of passive wife takes action against evil husband. I really liked the character Marion, JT's sister. The only non-predictable event in the book involves her.
What I didn't like: Alot of the dialogue fell short. I had a hard time believing in the character JT Dillon...he just wasn't all that 'tough' in my opinion. The ending was predictable.
