I was pleasantly surprised with this story. I very much liked the characters and the whole plot. Surprise ending. I'm reading Forever Odd now with equal enthusiasm.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best books that Dean Koontz has ever written. I was moved to tears reading it. I have been reading Koontz on and off since the early 90's, and haven't been impressed with much that he's done in the last decade. This books reveals a new, improved Koontz. I couldn't put it down, and for the first time in a long time, I felt like the relationship between the main characters worked. It still has that trademark Koontz humor and quirkiness, but it's the intensity is more subtle and heartfelt. This is not one to miss.

The Odd Thomas series is a must have. Thoughtful and well written. It has to be Koontz's best book ever.
very good book keeps you interested. first in a series of three. currently working on book two. Great story and character.

I had almost given up on Koontz. A friend recommended this book based on my love of the subject matter and I am so glad she did!! The story could have been taken in so many unnatural directions or given a hokey ending (if written by any other "horror" writer), but it starts strong and stays that way through the end. I swallowed it whole, finishing it in about 4 hours. I adore this book!

I LOVE this trilogy. Read this one first and it will help you read the other two. What a great character Koontz has created in Odd Thomas!
LOVED this book. It's one of my favorite Koontz books. Odd Thomas is a very memorable character. Highly recommended!

Wow! What a way to start a new year. This is the first book I've read by Dean Koontz and I'm kicking myself in the behind for overlooking the man for some many years! After this review, I will make it a point to get my hands on a copy of everything the man has ever written.
I first mentioned this book to my husband after coming across it in the bookstore early December. Back cover seemed interesting enough but, not being a fan of Koontz, I decided to put it on my "wish list". A few days later, my husband handed me the book (God Bless The Man! *grin)and with the first words ("My name is Odd Thomas...") - I was hooked!
There are no simple words to describe this book - it is a literary masterpiece. There were times when I forgot that I was reading a book and felt as if I were reading a memoir of sorts (in fact, it is from this view that Odd presents his story to the reader). You not only get to know each of the different characters Odd encounters in his life (each unique in their own ways) but you begin to care about what happens to these people. Many times I held my breath, struggling to keep my eyes from leaping to the paragraph below to see what fate awaited a member of Odd's "family".
I've read some pretty good books in '04 but one of my biggest complaints have been that the books start off very well but I find myself rushing through the ending. I clung to every word in this book, sometimes stopping to savor a particular phrase delivered by the narrator. And the ending delivered! Man, the writing is nothing less than awesome! So simplistic and yet so genius!
Hats off to Mr. Dean Koontz for a magnificent job!

Had heard this was a good read - and yes, the story was very compelling and the main character actually named Odd was sweet. Of course, it is typical Dean Koontz so you have to suspend disbelief and reality with the first page. It won't disappoint you.

This was the first Dean Koontz novel I have ever read. It flows well and I liked the charcters. I especially liked Odd Thomas. Liked him so well that I am reading the other two in the series. If you like Ghost Whisperer and CSI you will like this book.

Loved this book and was hooked from the first page. Very surprised, and saddened, by the ending, however I can't wait to begin the second book in the series to learn what Dean Koontz has in store for the very friendly and lovable Odd Thomas.

Even thought this author has been writing for a long time, this was the first novel I've read by him. I have to say that I really liked it because his writing style keeps you very interested in the story. I love reading books that are unpredictable and this one took me by surprise a lot. Even though I hated the way this one ended, I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Wonderful book! Mr. Koontz has created an intriguing, amazing character in Odd. This story made me laugh and cry while keeping me on the edge of my seat. It has heart and soul but also plenty of suspense and spookiness. I have been a fan of Dean Koontz for many years but I believe he truly outdid himself on this one. I highly recommend this book!

This was, for me, an incredible read; thrilling; it held me in its grip. Paranormal is not a genre I usually read, but Dean Koontz changed all that for me. This book has to be one of Koontzs most challenging endeavors. Odd Thomasyes, his name is really Oddis gifted with an unusual ability to see the dead who have lingered too long in this world. Sometimes they seek him out, but always he is driven by their need to communicate even though they cannot talk. The character Odd Thomas is complex in his simplicity and as the narrator of the story his language skills make description an art form. To quote Publishers Weekly: Marvelousthis is Koontz working at his pinnacle. Loved it!
Helpful Score: 1
Odd Thomas is actually about a guy named Odd... and, well, he has the "odd" ability to communicate with the dead who are stuck here on earth for some reason. Although the dead can't talk to Odd, they lead him to help solve their problems. Odd takes on this job very willingly with the feeling that it is his duty to help since he was given this strange gift. This first book in the series has Odd trying to prevent an aspiring mass murderer from committing his deed. Memorable character. Sparse, conversational type of writing, but a page-turner with twists and turns in plot.
Helpful Score: 1
20 year old Odd has an ability to see ghosts and wispy black things that hover in anticipation of death. Not many people know of his strange abilities, but he has trusted the police chief, who loves him as a son, and his girlfriend, Stormy, with his secrets. The harbingers of death are swarming in his town and he feels the need to stop whatever destruction is coming. This was a very loveable character in this fast moving story, and I cannot wait to read more of the Odd books on my TBR pile!

Could not put this book down, totally enjoy it. Odd is an interesting young man with the gift of seeing dead people. This book gives us some of Odd's unusual family history and tells us about his "forever" love.

I love this series! Odd is a very likeable character. There is enough action to keep things interesting and it is so different than any other subject matter I have ever read. It blends the supernatural with crime. A little love story ( I actually cried.) I loved it. SO good!

A really good read.. odd sees the dead and in some cases helps them finish thier business with an unlikely group of friends...it was very well written and kept my attention throughout. The mystery and sometimes creepiness was very enjoyable! thanks koontz for a book worth reading!

This book is simply amazing! Then again, so is everything I've read by Koontz. Still, the end was simply heart-wrenching. I'm getting a slight lump in my throat just thinking about it. The whole thing was just a fantastic, supremely entertaining story. Also, a quick, easy read. I could barely put it down!

This is the book that really got me started reading Koontz. The main character is interesting, the other characters are fleshed out and are a part of the story, and of course the premise and follow through maintain your interest. So if you are interested in a well written "ghost" story then this is a good one. Note this is not a ghost story per se, except for Elvis, the evil spirits aren't people. I don't know the timelines on this, did "Dead like me" come first or this. Some of these have a similar theme so who had the original idea and who expanded/improved on it is really something I don't care about since the good ones are just that - good and to be enjoyed.
I do have a problem with authors/movies merely recycling there heroes and not being creative and doing something new. With "Odd Thomas" the second book was readable again while the third killed me off of ever buying another sequel or prequel to this.

A very well written narrative of Dean Koontz character Odd Thomas. In this book, the first of the Odd Thomas series, we catch a glimpse into the life of Odd Thomas and his special abilities. I recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of Dean Koontz, the supernatural, or anyone just curious for a good read. Despite the somewhat spooky undertones, this book is surprisingly light-hearted and thought provoking.

I didn't really like this book. The writing style was a bit slow for me, from all I'd heard of Koontz, I expected more action, more suspense, more something. All I got was more desire for the darn book to END. Then, when it did, I wanted to throw it across the room (unfortunately I was at work--in a school, and couldn't). It was frustrating, sad, and not worth my time.

Liked it alot.
What's not to love? Odd Thomas is so endearing and interesting that it's hard not to get emotionally involved in the story.
Odd Thomas is easily the most likeable character I've ever found in a Koontz book. The sarcastic every-man, he has a heart of gold and actually tries to do good in the world, with his gift.
There are very few booths that can take a ghost haunting a person and turn it into a funny story. That is the case with Odd I actually laughed out loud at some points. While the whole books isn't laugh out loud funny, there are times when it is. In this story you have ghosts, love, mysteries and Elvis! I really enjoyed this book it was a light fast paced read.
I'm not generally a huge fan of sci-fi or books about the fantastic, but this one was surprisingly engaging. I read it in just a few days. Even with its supernatural elements, it's so clearly written and so well developed that it still seems -- oddly enough -- realistic.
This was a great book! I can't wait to read the next book!!! if you liked the movie "the Sixth Sense" you will like reading this book!
If you read nothing else this year, the Dean Koontz "Odd Thomas" series is a do NOT miss!
A riveting read from start to finish.
One of my all-time favorites by Koontz. Odd Thomas, a nondescript short-order cook at the Pico Mundo Grill, is an unlikely hero with a gift. Odd's charming self-effacing humor is engaging and the dialog throughout the book is cleverly written. The contrast between Odd's honesty and purity and the evil he often faces was dramatically defined. Odd Thomas is an impressive introduction to a remarkable character and well worth the read. Odd's character is so palpable, I never wanted the book to end!

If you are not already a fan of Dean Koontz, you will be soon. His books are thoughtful, well constructed, intelligent, with likable characters and unexpected twists.
Odd Thomas is no exception. Probably one of his most likable characters to date, and that is saying a lot. Although I enjoyed the book from the beginning, I don't think I became emotionally invested until somewhere in the middle. It creeps up on you. Then all of a sudden you find yourself scared that something bad will happen to Odd, or to one of his friends.
I can't really comment too much on this book without giving something away, which I abhor doing. Once again Koontz takes us out of the mainstream, and makes up his own rules along the way. Read it for yourself, but make sure you have the other 2 books ready to jump into when you are done.

Typical Koonz with a twist.
The first Odd Thomas book. Good read.
Odd Thomas, who narrates, is odd indeed: only 20, he works contentedly as a fry cook in a small fictional California town, despite a talent for writing. The reason for his lack of ambition? A much rarer talent: Odd sees and converses with ghosts, the lingering dead who have yet to pass on, a secret he has kept from nearly everyone but his girlfriend, an eccentric author friend and the local police chief, whom he occasionally helps solve terrible crimes. Odd also has the ability to see bodachs, malevolent spirits that feast on pain and whose presence signifies a likelihood of imminent violence. The proximity of bodachs to a weird-looking stranger in town, whom Odd dubs "Fungus Man," alerts Odd that trouble is brewing; breaking into Fungus Man's house, Odd discovers not only hundreds of bodachs but a shrine to serial killers that helps him deduce that somehow Fungus Man will wreak widespread havoc very soon-so Odd is caught in a classic race against time to deter catastrophe. As with Koontz's best novels, this one features electrifying tension and suspense, plus a few walloping surprises. But Koontz fans know that the author has recently added humor to his arsenal of effects, and this thriller also stands out for its brilliant tightrope walk between the amusing and the macabre; one of the dead with whom Odd interacts frequently, for instance, is Elvis, still pining for his long-dead mother, Gladys. Above all, the story, like most great stories, runs on character-and here Koontz has created a hero whose honest, humble voice will resonate with many. In some recent books, Koontz has tended to overwrite, but not here: the narrative is as simple and clear as a newborn's gaze. This is Koontz working at his pinnacle, providing terrific entertainment that deals seriously with some of the deepest themes of human existence: the nature of evil, the grip of fate and the power of love.
Another awesome Dean Koontz Series. Odd is another warm and colorful character. Koontz pulls you right in.
Odd Thomas, can see dead people, which makes his life very interesting. This is a good read, a first in series about Odd Thomas. The third book is currently in hardback.
Loved this book !! Can't wait for Brother Odd the third in the series to go to paperback, hardcover is a little out of my range (price wise) I would list Forever Odd but I have that in audiobook.
Great read quick (2 hours for me) Stephen King / Brian Lumley mix.
You'll fall in love with Odd

Very fun read! Makes want to pick up the other two books in the series.
suspense on every page
I do not normally like Dean Koontz. I end to think of him as a bit of a ...hack. I was pleasantly surprised by this book though. The first person Odd's narrative voice, gives this a different/better tone.
first of the Odd books. I loved it, had to run out to get 2 and 3.
Odd Thomas is a very engaging and page turning book. Odd Thomas is a recluse interesting young man, that works at a local diner in town. He is a simple man, wears the same thing every day, like things in a certain pattern and loves his girlfriend. Odd also has a gift, he sees the dead and helps them cross over. When Odd's day starts he sees a you girl, and she leads him to her killer. Odd confronts the killer and the day starts rolling! I really enjoyed this book and though sometimes Koontz can get long winded in explainations, this is a excellant book.
Good read! Kept me on the edge of my seat.
This is one of my favorite Koontz books. The main character is very likable and sweet and the book, though horrific, has a deeply spiritual feel to it.
Great book! I have read all of the Oddie books except the last one and am re- collecting them since the April 2011 tornado. These are books I can read over and over...
This book sucked me in from page one and didn't let go! A must read!
I read Brother Odd first not know that it was the 3rd book in the Odd Thomas collection. That kind of ruined part of the ending of this book for me. I felt like it took a long time to get to the excitement, but it is a well written book overall.
Love, love, love this book. Now I'm hooked on the series. Very good storytelling!
Without a doubt ,hands down , my favorite Koontz book to date, this trilogy is soooooo good, I wish he would write book four. If you like Koontz ,you won't be let down after reading this series..Great characters, sucks you in from page one.
My first Dean Koontz book ever read. Good read!!
Koontz delivers again with this thriller!
My husband says, "This was a good book."
My first Koontz book. I was impressed. I'm not a horror fan but someone impressed on me the need to read this book. If his stuff is all like this, I'll read more.
Beautiful. I laughed, I cried, I wet my pants... ok, so I made up that last one. This is definitely one of Koontz's best books. Highly recommended to Koontz fans and those who have never read him.
Suspence and humor by Koontz.
This is a great book, I couldn't put it down. I had Brother Odd before this without knowing the background and it filled in the gaps of the story for me. There was enough excitement to keep you turning the pages without being gruesome. It could have been written differently where more attention was paid on the gruesome detail I think I would not have enjoyed it.
A good book for the true Koontz fan. I personally thought it could have been better and it was different from what I am used to reading of his novels.
I've only read three Dean Koontz books & two of those I didn't care for. However,in this book I liked the main character & enjoyed the story as well.
loved this book and felt more real like i was there with the characters and watching them up close instead of reading it.
Great book in typical Koontz style.
I enjoyed this one, I consider it The Sixth Sense with an adult character
Good book!!
I recommend this book to anyone who ever read one of Kontz's suspense novels. This one is a little different, but then, Odd Thomas is a "little different" from most heroes. Read his story and discover his gift.
Wonderful book. This is the first in a series of three. This follows Odd Thomas as he goes about his life for about a week. Very riviting and encapturing. A definate Koontz must read.
Um Yuck! I have never read a Dean Koontz, nor will I ever again. It sounded right up my alley, kinda other worldly but this book was boring.
Every time it started to take off the author would reign it in and drag you through a totally different story line that seemed to have nothing to do with the action of the book, and in the long run didn't. So you read pages and pages of just story that doesn't answer any questions.
On top of that I felt that he wrote in a "bloated" fashion. Trying to sound smarter than he really is...
And lastly and most annoyingly, any and all questions he posed were not, i repeat NOT answered. And let me tell you there were quite a few of them.
I did discover that this is the first in a series. I will not be reading any more even if they answered all the unanswered questions in the first.

I haven't read anything else from Mr. Koontz, but this one was a page turner from cover to cover.
NOT MY CUP OF TEA. WAS A LITTLE TO "FAR OUT" FOR ME. ONLY REASON I WANTED TO READ IT, WAS I SAW THE FILMING OF THE MOVIE WHEN I WAS IN SANTA FE, NM IN SEPTEMBER 2011.
Currenlty reading Odd Thomas and really am impressed by the character development. This is only my second Koontz book and I must say I am enjoying the Odd Thomas the character more than I ever thought I would. Quick read, especially since you know there is more Odd waiting in books to come.
Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Couldn't put it down. Odd Thomas is a wonderful character. I have already read Forever Odd and Brother Odd and recommend all 3 to everyone.
Odd is one of the coolest characters ever created. Original idea, very touching.
This is the first of the 3 books about Odd Thomas. It is suspenseful as well as funny. I personally love all 3 of the Odd books. I think they are some of Koontz's best work.
Not too scary, interesting characters. Some surprising twists. A love story that explores the nature of evil, with the ghost of Elvis.
Koontz is one of the best horror writers. keeps you on the edge of your seat. thsi book was great
Having already read both book 2 and book 3 of this series - both very good, by the way - I knew the fate of the characters, but still found myself wrapped up in the lives of Odd Thomas, Teri, Stormy, Chief Porter, and Little Ozzie and his cat.
The ending was surprising and not something I could have seen coming. I can't wait to continue my reading of the series.

The first in a series by Koontz about a boy with a strange gift. One of my fav's by this author.
I've neveer thought of Dean Kootnz's novels as literary masterpieces, but they were nice little 'sitcoms' for me. Easy to read with action to keep you engaged, but this is one book I didn't finish. Lost interest about 100 pages in and couldn't continue. Very rare for me. There are many others out there that will enjoy this book.
Dean Koontz with his natural aplomb keeps you going throughout the book. Put on some coffee or tea, this will keep you up late.
One of Koontz's best books. By the end of the books I was so caught up in the story that I physically felt bad for the lead character. Very well written (as are most by Koontz) and definitely keeps you engrossed in the story throughout. I am so glad there are more books available in this series (& more still to come). If you even slightly like Koontz or are looking to give him a try, this is the book you should read.
Interesting story line, but I like better character development. I will be reading others to see where it goes.
this is a good book
Very interesting book. I had a hard time getting into it at first, but once I did, Iwa hooked and couldn't put it down. It made me a real Koontz fan.
I LOVED "Odd Thomas". The character is hilarious and the way the story flowed kept me with it the entire time. I read this book in one "sitting". Highly recommended for Koontz fans and for weirdo-sarcastic-goofy people like me. ; )
Odd Thomas (talk about killing your parents for naming you weird things!) sees dead people and has strange psychic abilities. He might be odd but apparantly his girlfriend, Stormy, is gorgeous. Go figure! Anyway, his home town is inundated with evil shadows (bodocks) which spike his weird meter and sets Odd on a mission to find out what is going on. This is typical Dean Koontz - way out there but enjoyable nonetheless. I usually like Koontz's writing and this was no exception. Odd is a quirky guy but also loveable, caring and kind. There is a few murders in it but no really graphic details. Even the squeamish should be able to read this one. The ending is very sad and I admit to having tears in my eyes when it was done. Book 2 - Forever Odd should be interesting.
The first book in the Odd Thomas series. Dean Koontz lite.
Such a wonderful story...well written, entertaining, hilarious and, at times, quite touching. Koontz has created an excellent series with this book being the first of the series. Odd, a 21 yr old fry cook, sees the dead and...well...the fun ensues! This will be a quick read because it is so well written and I recommend this book to everyone I know!
This is a great book. I had not read any of Koontz's work before, so I was a little nervous about this. But it is great. Hard to put down! My husband, who is not a strong reader and doesn't like to read much, loved this book too. He finished it faster that just about anything he has ever read.
bored me to death. I didn't even finish it. A friend recommended it and I was sure I would like it but no go. I think the tone of it turned me off. I felt like the characters were talking down to the audience.
great character with unusual abilities. great suspense and a red herring or two to keep you turning pages.
Odd Thomas is just a great character! I love these books!
I'm sorry Dean but this one just didn't make the grade! Too much detail in too many subjects will bore a reader to death! Now I am a huge Dean Koontz fan and I've read lots of his stuff. This one just couldn't hold my interest. It was literally overkill with detail. Still, in my humble opinion âWatchersâ is my favorite book of all time. I could read or listen to the audio book over and over with that one. Some of my other favorites were the Bad Place, Strangers, Midnight, Door to December and The Voice of the night. It seems that the newer books are missing an element that the older books have. Come on Dean! You can do much better than Odd Thomas!
Another GREAT book by Dean Koontz - evidently he writes nothing bad.
Odd Thomas is a very interesting Character -- Koontz was right in making a series out of him. All 3 books are terriffic!
Very good book by Dean Koontz, easy read once the story gets started. I loved reading about Odd Thomas and his knack for seeing dead people.
Another excellent Koontz novel. I laughed, cried and sat on the edge of my seat while reading this book. I enjoyed it immensely.
From the cover - 'Sometimes the silent souls who seek Odd out want justice. occasionally their otherworldly tips help him prevent a crime. But thi time it's different. . . .Aided by his soul mate, Stormy Llewellyn, and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n Roll, Odd will race against time to thwart the gathering evil. . . .'
I enjoyed this quirky Koontz book and will certainly look for the sequals and gobble them up as well.

Very 'odd' book, but interesting too. Creepy, thrilling, and catching. Will keep you and not let you go....a great Dean Koontz!
Very creative fantasy/horror story. Good characters.
I love Dean Koontz! Odd was out to save those who could be saved! Even the King tried to help! You have to pay attention or you'll get confused but Odd is there and he'll help!!
Great Book!!!
Great Book!!!
KOONTZ IS AN ARTIST WITH WORDS BUT WILL HIT YOU WITH A HARD SURPRISE ENDING
Thomas sees dead people, but they don't talk to him. He is a very endearing character.
Very interesting...suprise at the end.
Fantastic reading. I love Odd Thomas.
Thoroughly entertaining. My favorite Dean Koontz book I've read thus far...
Great read from Koontz! Cool concept and I love Odd.
One of Koontz's better books. Nicely entertaining.
Very entertaining!
Great story, with Koontz' typically elegant use of words.
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down.
I haven't read a Koontz novel since HS and thought I might see if his writing was still appealing to me. I noticed a line of "Odd" books and decided I'd start at the beginning.
For a book that is more mystery than horror, this book scared me. Well, it gave me the creeps. I couldn't predict any of it. I enjoyed the main character and found his relationships fun to explore.
The story itself was interesting and page turning. The ending was suprising and harrowing. I'll definitely read the next one to see where it goes.

I really enjoyed this book, amusing(his imaginary friend is Elvis),keeps you interested with the suspense of it all.
My favorite of all the Dean Koontz titles. Odd Thomas and his girlfriend, Stormy, just leap off the page as fully realized personalities.
Odd Thomas, a short order cool om a small desert town is contacted regularly by the dead. Sometimes they seek justice; other times their tips help him prevent a crime. But this time a stranger has come who threatens the small community- can Odd Thomas help stop the gathering evil.
A good story. Isn't one of his best though.
Dean Koontz is a great author - The dead don't talk, but they do try to communicate with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Excellent book.
As most of Koontz's books...this one is strange, but the main charactor is very interesting and funny. Kept me going and I finished it quickly. I highly recommend it!
One of the best Dean Koontz books I've ever read. It's got action, suspense, humor, and a love story thrown in. Oh, and lot's of ghosts.
Very interesting reading. One of Koontz's best. Nice ending for a change from him.
Awsome book, quick read. Koontz at his best.
I loved this book. It is very Odd...but a great read.
Sometimes the silent souls who seek Odd out want justice. Occasionally their otherworldly tips help him prevent a crime. But this time it's different. A stranger comes to Pico Mundo, accompanied by a horde of hyena-like shades who herald an imminent catastrophe. Aided by his soul mate, Stormy Llewellyn, and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Odd will race against time to thwart the gathering evil.
This is my favorite Dean Koontz book so far!
Very enjoyable book about a lovable character who has a very odd talent. A must read for Koontz fans.
Engaging book -- easy reading. Great characters. Good intro into Koontz' books.
I enjoyed this book with the twist at the end it was a good read after getting tired of reading so many Koontz books. I would suggest it for any Dean Koontz fan.
The first of the Odd Thomas series--I read it third, but still liked reading about the events "Oddie" alludes to in the other two books.
This is the start of a great Koontz series. Odd Thomas can see (but not speak to) the dead, and he sometimes just KNOWS the right thing to do. He's a young man who has given himself over to just that, doing the right thing to help both the living and the dead. His particularly endearing character is funny, self-critical, and spiritual in a sort of down-to-earth way; after all, the dead are just people that aren't alive anymore, to him. If you like anti-heroes, he's not it. He's a kind of old-fashioned hero we don't see that much anymore. Any moral ambiguities are more in his head, due to his self-questioning, than actual. Two scenes that stuck in my head may give you a nice sample: Thomas, hard at work as a fry cook in a popular diner, trying to get his orders straight while not betraying the fact that the diner is suddenly swarming with evil shadows that followed a customer in - because if they realize he can see them he'll have a fatal accident within seconds. Later in the book, Thomas chooses a baseball bat as his weapon and goes striding off without hesitation to try to stop several gunmen. I immediately ordered the next two books after I read this one.
This is a great book and 1 of 4 in the set. Paranormal with humor. Great for teens too.
What a great character!! Thankfully he stuck with Odd for the benefit of all of his admirers!! Thanks Mr Koontz!
I love this series of books! Can't get enough Odd.
I loved this book. Dean Koontz just gets better and better. He writes with sensitivity and humor at the same time. This is a great book.
If you liked the movie Sixth Sense, you will like this book. It was a fast, easy read. Very entertaining.
I've read a good 20 books or more of Dean Koontz and I always had a good read, but this was the BEST!! I was on my toes at all times and had a hard time putting it down. Wonderfully written and an easy read. I never felt like I HAD to read to get to the end, I enjoyed every minute of it.
Very good book. Couldn't put it down!!! Loved it!!
Odd Thomas - a book, as I usually do on airplanes, that I picked up to read during a cross country flight. After a few out there kind of weird books from Dean Koontz, he comes back to his roots with Odd Thomas. Thomas is sort of like a psychic superhero who can see evil, and events that might happen. And, oh yah, he can see the dead Elvis. Any book with dead Elvis ghosting around in it is worth checking out. This book has it's villains, has a hero, has a tragedy, and has a great conclusion. Kind of a sixth sense type feel to this book, worth reading.
"The dead don't talk, I don't know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Meet Odd Thomas, the unassuming young hero of Dean Koontz's bestseller, a gallant sentinel at the crossroads of life and death who offers up his heart in these pages and will forever capture yours.
I've read almost every Dean Koontz book. This was another great read.
Loved it!
Great Dean Koontz book. A bit of a departure, but a wonderful story.
The blurb tells you most of it, but it doesn't tell you that when you read this book you will laugh, and you will cry...and you might just look differently at some of those marginal people who hang around the fringes of acceptable society.

From Publishers Weekly-
"Once in a very great while, an author does everything right-as Koontz has in this marvelous novel.
Odd Thomas, who narrates, is odd indeed: only 20, he works contentedly as a fry cook...The reason for his lack of ambition? A much rarer talent: Odd sees and converses with ghosts, the lingering dead who have yet to pass on, a secret he has kept from nearly everyone but his girlfriend, an eccentric author friend and the local police chief, whom he occasionally helps solve terrible crimes."

Absolutely, positively WONDERFUL!!!! Another Koontz great!
COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!! Koontz rocks.
Great book. Typical Dean Koontz novel.
one of dean koontz best
Excellent!! I think this is Dean Koontz best yet, and as long-time fan, that is saying a lot.
This is the first in a series and was very good; am looking forward to the next one. It is written in the first person. You get to like the character but have a sense of impending doom as he moves through his days.
I've read a lot of Koontz' books. This is one of his better ones. It' quite heartwarming. I'm waiting for the sequel.
Enjoyable
Great story....fast read....
I absolutely loved this book. I had stopped reading Dean Koontz a long time ago because I felt his books were all the same. This book blew that out idea out of the water.
Great Story! I rarely buy hardcover books, but when the sequel to this came out I just couldn't wait!
Odd Thomas talks to dead people and sees evil spirits...what could be more Dean Koontz than that? This is a good story, not too scary with characters that you root for. I'm back to being a DK fan.
A likeable average guy is communicating with dead souls as they try to warn him of impending evil. A surprise ending.
This kept my attention way past bed time. I miss the young man named "Odd" a bit. He has a gift, & lives to tell about it.
Koontz is an amazing writer.
Koontz is an amazing writer.
Great story! Koontz always delivers.
Really great read, twists and turns around every corner, very hard to put down
anyone who likes Dean Koontz will love this one.
One of Koontz's better ones, although there is always the feeling, with the matchstick-sketch characters Koontz draws, that one has read it before. A good read.
This book was haunting. It pulled me in and didn't let go until I had finished it. It is a really good read.
I really live the TV program Medium so this was a hit with me.
Odd Thomas is a Dean Koontz book, good vs. evil, easy read, poignant characters that you care about.
Strange but good. I really enjoyed.
Excellent story, chilling with a little bit of humor and romance. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down.
Very creepy and funny book.
The first of the Three Odd Thomas books, and what a great read it was!
Classic Dean Koontz - once you get going can't put it down.
Excellent thriller!!
I was sent to the book after viewing the film. I enjoyed both. Odd Thomas is an interesting character and I enjoyed the tone and premise of the book.
First book in a series of three Odd Thomas books (so far). The third book was just published (Brother Odd - November 2006).
1. Odd Thomas
2. Forever Odd
3. Brother Odd
This character is one that Dean Koontz likes and likes writing about.
Dean Koontz: "When I wrote ODD THOMAS, the title character came to me fully formed, as if he were a real person whom I had known all my life. No character in any of my previous novels led me through his story with such grace, with his voice unfailingly strong in my mind's ear, making revelations about himself and his family that were surprising even shocking in some instances yet seemed inevitable to me the moment they were made."
I forsee more books in this series.
Odd Thomas is an easy, entertaining read, one of Koontz's best eforts.

Classic Dean Koontz. Great story.
Odd is a very likeable charactor. Its a good story, fun to read. Its a sort of ghost story, a little creepy. I liked it.
Ordered for my son at his request. He liked it.
Good story with good characters.
Classic Koontz
eerie, weird, but good
Loved this Koontz book.. very different.. very riveting! Excellent Read.. as is Forever Odd as the character is continued.
A must read. Odd is unlike any other character Koontz has concocted. Very different; very good.
You will be addicted to Odd.
The dead try to communicate with title character Odd Thomas, only they don't speak. They try to help him stop evil from happening. Very fast paced book. I could not stop reading once I started.
Odd Thomas was a book that lived up to it's hype which I rarely ever say about a book. Usually when I read a book that everyone tells me is so good I find that it's commercial in the aspect that it caters to a general audience and is below my standards.
First we meet Odd; the main character in which the book is named for. Koontz did a superb job of making him seem like the most normal boy you'd ever meet. He lives a quiet life, works as a fry cook, and lives in a 2 room garage apartment. Usually not the type of material that you write a book about, which in the same sense, you get a feel that's the reason he wrote a book about Odd.
Odd, for a lack of a better phrase, sees dead people. Odd sees everyone from a 12 year old girl that was raped and murdered to Elvis. Yes, Elvis Presley. In his little town of Pico Mundo, California the King lives on, yet when Koontz places Elvis on Odd's life, it's far from cheesy. In a strange sense you feel that not only does he add to the story, he belongs in the story.
We are introduced to Odd's gift in the beginning of the book when he sees 12 year old Penny Kallisto. Penny was raped and murdered by who we shortly find out is Odd's high school acquaintance Harlo Landerson. Odd in the past has solved several cases like this, which in return as earned him a close relationship with Chief Wyatt Porter, a sort of surrogate father to him.
His girlfriend/fiance Stormy Llewellyn is the next main and second most important character as Odd's life is defined and shaped by her. Stormy is well written and towards the middle of the book, you really feel the bond between her and Odd and why they consider themselves soulmates. The author did an excellent job of having them add to one another's role in the story instead of her seeming like space filler like so many authors tend to do when adding a "supporting cast" to their books.
The readers are introduced quickly to "Fungus Man" who we can identify as an antagonist. Odd gives him the nickname because of his fungus yellow hair and completion. Even though he brings no element of surprise, he does leave you in suspense as to what his role really is. It's made clear through hints throughout the book and in Odd's own words as he is narrating the story that something terrible is going to go down in Pico Mundo, we just don't know exactly what for a few chapters.
A little further in, meeting Odd's best friend Little Ozzy only completes the unusual cast. Little Ozzy is a writer, an art critic, a 400 lb man with 11 fingers, and the keeper of a 58 year old cat named Terrible Chester. Ozzy demanded that Odd sit down and write his tale to help him cope with what has happened to him in all the events of the book and to deal with reality.
The fateful event that takes place doesn't last long in the sense that it's drawn out for chapters and chapters and is rather short and sweet with plenty of curve balls thrown. Even in it's brevity it doesn't disappoint and since I never give anything anyway, I can't really critique it too much but know that it was well written and something you won't walk away from feeling let down.
Through the lingering dead, a satanic cult, normal (and not so normal) life of a 20 year old boy, grief, tears, and love this book is amazing and possibly the first in a series Dean Koontz will be most remembered by.

Interesting book. A New York Times bestseller. A young man communicates with the dead to seek justice. Like the show "Medium" with a classic Dean Koontz flavor.
One of Koontzs' less scary books. It is actually a very interesting story and good reading (even before bed).
Loved the book and the characters. Can't wait to read Forever Odd.
Different from what I expected.
I don't know why it's taken me so long to read this book. The subject matter kind of had me a little standoffish. Oh my. This is a wonderful book, in fact, the library opens in 14 hours and I will be there when the door opens for the next one. You KNOW the book is special, when you have to re-read the last few chapters in total shock, and can't stop thinking about it. The characters are all so loveable. I can't say enough about this book!
Wow. I loved this book! It was a great story!
My whole family loved this book. It is a great read. We all fell in love with Thomas. This is not a typical Dean Koontz book. It is highly interesting and very sentimental.
Awesome Read by Dean Koontz, one of my favs he has written to date, has a very good sequel now also called Forever Odd
Odd Thomas is among Koontz's best work.
Great book. I could not put this down until I finished. His best yet.
One of my favorites!
Oddly Satisfying!
Very different and intertaining book.
Excellent read. I'm enjoying this series.
I very much enjoyed this book. I am a medium who does talk to ghosts and I found this fictional story very realistic.I've noticed that they have made it into a graphic novel. I'm giving up my copy of this book so I can have a spac e for the graphic novel.
Love this book and the whole series. Odd Thomas is a character you can really love. The characters are interesting and the suspense is good. Overall a great book.
Odd Thomas just never drew me in. It wasn't my cuppa story. The character of Odd felt gimmicky and the narrative was too rambling, it lacked focus. I'm still yawning.
I will give the next book Forever Odd a go because it's already in my TBR pile, but my expectation for enjoyment is pretty low.

I read this books years ago and just realized that 3 more "ODD" books followed. Reread it to catch me up on who is who. Enjoyed it much the 2nd time around also. Good, fast easy read.
I loved this book! Normaly, I really don't bother with anything like this. However, I was fascinated by the story of a short order cook who had psychic (spelled wrong) powers. I look forward to the sequal.
Odd Thomas is great, keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Really like Odd.Will be waiting for another
Sometimes the silent souls who seek Odd out want justice. Occasionally their otherworldly tips help him prevent a crime. but this time it's different. IT WAS 0K NOT ONE OF HIS BEST WORKS
Sometimes the silent souls who seek Oddout want justice. This time, a stranger comes to town accompanied by a horde of hyena-like shades who herald an imminent catastrophe. Odd races against time to thwart the gathering evil.
i don't know how a story with such an odd premise of the dead speaking to a fry cook in Mojave can also be so beautifully written but somehow Dean Koontz did it. the story was disturbing to me is why the lower rating than normal for this book from me. Maybe it's supposed to be. You judge.
First book that I've read in this series and it didn't disappoint. Excellent character development, you really get inside the head of the main character, especially. Keeps you intrigued all the way to the last page -- doesn't just 'drop the ball', as so many novels do, to rush the ending.

Odd Thomas is a simple young man, who works as a short-order cook in Pico Mundo, CA. He doesn't have a fancy house or car. One thing he does have is the unique ability to see the dead. It's this ability that leads him to discover that a local man is planning to launch an attack agains the citizens of Pico Mundo. Stopping it won't be simple, though, and Odd must keep his wits about him if he is to prevent harm from befalling this quiet desert town.

Truley another excellent read!
Truley another excellent read!
i don't know. i could not get that into it. if you are on dean koontz' meat than you will probably love this. I thought it wasn't that original. it bored me.
I read this after a lot of people told me it was great. I like Dean Kootz, but for some reason, it was really hard for me to get through this one. I liked it once I finished it, but it was a slow read. I heard the second one was better, looking forward to reading it.
Great story! Easy to follow. Good continuity!
Dean Koontz wrote another winner. The characters are well developed, the story line is nail biting - on the edge of your seat type of read. I just couldn't put it down. I heartedly recommend it to thriller/horror readers. The "Odd Thomas" series is excellent, worth re-reading time after time. No re-post here, this book is a keeper.
Let me preface my review by saying that I saw the movie a few years ago and enjoyed it very much, so I fully expected to enjoy the book. And I did. However, I couldn't stop picturing Anton Yelchin as Odd and it made me very sad. That being said, the movie was a pretty fair representation of the book. Minus the parts with Odd's insanely bad parents. OMG they were terrible, horrible people!
The story is told by the protagonist, Odd Thomas, who can see the dead...and other otherworldly things. He lives a life of simplicity as a fry cook in a small town and wants nothing more than to settle down with his soul mate, Stormy and maybe get a job selling tires...eventually. He does his best to help the dead settle whatever business they still have on this plane so that they can finally cross over to the next.
But that all changes the day the Fungus Man comes into the diner where Odd works. This man is the precursor to the tragedy about to hit Odd's town. Odd is then in a race to figure out what horrible thing is about to happen in his town, learn what the Fungus Man has to do with it all, and keep as many people safe as possible.
Having enjoyed the movie so much, I kind of expected the book to blow me out of the water. It did not. It was good, very good even, but not great. The story was very sad really. Learning the way Odd and Stormy grew up, the burden of his "gift", the ending. I'm a little hesitant to continue with the series, but really, I need to find out what happens to Odd next.
Even though it didn't knock my socks off, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's into the supernatural.

I absolutely loved this book. I can't wait to read the next but I'm going to pace myself so I can't have some delayed gratification.
"The dead don't talk. I don't know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn."
"Maybe he has a gift, maybe it's a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd's otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo's sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it's different."
"A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world's worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd's deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15."
"Today is August 15." In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares - and a testament by which to live sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.
I loved this book -- it is very intriguing!
