Is it sad that I'm just sticking with reading this series because I want to know what's going on a little better (or going to happen) with the television series? Probably. If you have more patience on wanting to know what happens next, I'd suggest just watching the television series, because this is on of those books that was made better by going to the screen.
That said, this series reminds me a lot of Laurell K. Hamilton's "Anita Blake" series, but with less talent on the part of the author. It's very vampire-lite and the author is a bit all over the place with her plot, which is very weak. Of course it didn't help that the "answer" to the crime in the beginning of this book wasn't really addressed much until the story was nearly over and then the way in which the criminals were dealt with was a bit corny and convenient.
The characters are all fairly shallow in their development as well, and it's really hard to "bond" with any of them like you could in a well-written series... well, you could, if you're desperate.
Most of the time, I'm just not liking Bill, and Sookie is a bit pathetic since she lets her man drink of humans when he doesn't need to because he can get all his nutrition out of a bottle of synthetic blood. Since the whole biting someone else is quite enjoyable for the vamps, it's like he's cheating on her every time he does it. Yet, he wants her to be loyal to him while he continues to enjoy the thrill of tapping into someone else when he know she doesn't like it. I truly wanted to like him, but he's such a sleeze sometimes that it's easy not to. It's driving me crazy that Sookie's character likes to play-tough, but it seems she's so hard up for this guy she'll look the other way so she can keep going back to him.
Overall, the books are okay, but not a series I'd normally stick with if it weren't the the show on HBO. Luckily, the books are quick reads so the pain is minimal.

Well, I gave this book a chance after not really loving Dead Until Dark. I just cannot get into this series. I don't feel invested in the storyline; the characters just don't do much for me as I feel very detached while reading through this. I will admit I read 230 pages and skimmed the last 50 just to finish the book. Sorry for the negative review, but that's what they are here for!

This is the second in the series, and every bit as good/better as the first one. It's a series that makes me feel like I can't wait for the next one because I'm enjoying them so much. Different take on vampires, that's for sure!

Second in the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire series, this book takes Sookie and Bill deeper into vampire territorial politics as Sookie is loaned to the Dallas vampires to help investigate the disappearance of one of their group. Another fun read. :)

Sookie Stackhouse is still dating Bill the Vampire. Eric, the master vampire to whom Bill owes allegiance, has asked Sookie for a favor - and she cannot refuse. He wants her to go to Dallas to use her telepathic skills to aid the vampires to track down one of their missing "brothers". There is also the mystery of the murder of the cook at the bar where Sookie works to solve. This was a fun murder mystery to read. I liked the additional shapeshifters and other non-humans in the story.

I have to disagree with Daedelys' comments, I have found the Southern Vampire Series a wonderful treat. I came to these books after slogging through the first 3 books in the Twilight series...ugh. Sookie's stories have been a funny, clever and suspenseful turn on the vampire genre. I can see how Laurel Hamilton readers would find them less appealing but for those of us who want some fun diversions, this series is it.

Just because the True Blood is on the market doesn't mean the Vampires have sworn off humans entirely. The tension in the relationship between Sookie and Bill makes it less predictable (especially when Eric enters the picture)and moves the plot along nicely.
I suggest you snuggle up with this one and enjoy a good read :)

Another book that I could NOT stop reading...As I stated in a previous review of Dead Until Dark...I LOVE Harris' campy style and Sookie evolves into a very lovable character...She REALLY needs a good health insurance policy but she is lovable...VERY much recommend!!!

Living Dead In Dallas was much like the first of the series (Dead Until Dark) for me: lackluster though entertaining. Most of my enjoyment was garnered by the introduction to new characters (Eric) and the fact that it was based in Texas, which is my home state.

I wasn't wild about this series after reading the first book but I had invested in getting the first 7 after my Mom recommended this series to me. I didn't love the first book but I liked it enough to keep reading and I enjoyed this one more than the first. I've never been one to read romance novels but I do like a little romance. There isn't a whole lot of that in this book but there is some pretty exciting intimate scenes that don't leave a whole lot to the imagination. On a totally different note, I feel like I am getting to know Sookie more with each book and she is totally growing on me. If you liked the first one you will like this one as well and if you loved the first one, well I'm not sure why you are checking out reviews before reading this one. I just finished the third book (Club Dead) and it is my favorite so far.

I was completely hooked by the end of book 1 i couldn't wait for book 2. When I did read it I was not as thrilled, I almost did not read book 3. But I have to say i am glad that i did because I really love this series.
I think book 2 was just alittle confusing...it started in one place then went on to something totally different and then came back to the begining at the end. No biggie I'm still reading...I am on book 7

I love the writer. And I love the fact you don't have to of had to watch the series True Blood or read the books in order to know what has happened. In fact I read them out of order and was completely surprised by the ending on each. I love the romance triangle Sookie has going on. I love the writers way of making you smile in all the adult only parts. She brings every story to such climax's and them always brings you back down to love and romance...well as good as it can be with a the undead....Love it!

Sookie Stackhouse isn't phased by much but when the body of a dear friend in found in the parking lot Merlotte's and she is asked to go to Dallas to help out the local chapter of the vampire guild, things seem to get a bit out of hand. Especially when you throw in a bar loving maenad.
Arriving in Dallas with Bill at her side, Sookie sets out to find a missing vampire and bring him back to the nest. Sounds easy especially with her gift but of course she finds herself a captive of a church/fanatical group called the Fellowship of the Sun. Their main purpose is to destroy all vampires and those that are associated with them. Well, obviously, this puts Sookie in a difficult situation.
This book actually has two storylines, the first being the Dallas part and the second being back home in Louisiana with the investigation around the death of Lafayette a cook from Merlotte's. Since Lafayette is found dead in the back of Andy Bellefleur's car, and Andy being a local policeman, things aren't looking so good. But true to Sookie's word of taking care of things, she is once again thrown into the middle of things and learning a whole lot more about her fellow neighbors of Bon Temps. But that fun loving maenad is there to help and Sookie may not be so judgmental if the raving mad woman can help her.
A little bit more is discovered about the main characters. Harris does a wonderful job in slowly developing her characters and letting the reads know just enough to keep them coming back for me.

I read all of these books before the HBO series, and there is a different vibe from the books versus the show, which is much darker and scarier.
Sookie is trying to live her life in Bon Temps, trying to stay out of others thoughts, and trying to understand why Bill acts the way he does.

I am ejoying seeing Seeing Soakie's character grow as the series continues. but Im disappointed at how her & Bill's relation ship "progressed". All in all, still a fun read.

I love this series! The books are so well written that you feel you know the characters personally & really care about what happens to them. I have read the first two books so far, but both have had fascinating, fast moving plots that made for books I could not put down!

I liked this book better than the first book in this series (Dead Until Dark). It had quite a few humorous moments and the plot moved quickly. I liked it enough that I'm going to read the 3rd book in the series. Dang, I think it's sucked me in!

This was a great 2nd book. I think I liked it better than the first. Sookie is getting more comfortable with her disablilty and we meet more supernatural creatures. It was very fast paced. I read it very quickly. Highly recommended!

I find that enjoy books in a series. This book did draw me further into the Sookie Stackhouse line. I read the beginning thinking I may only be reading it to get to the next book. By the middle of this book, my perspective changed. I have a deeper understanding of the content, a more intense and personal view of some characters. By the time I completed this book, I was hooked and planning for events I hope might occur in the next book!
As with the first book in this series, I find the characters and plots intriguing, all with the exception of Sookie. Sookie, to me, is an annoying woman with terrible people skills and this idea that she has a right to do and say whatever she wants whenever she wants. She is constantly "snapping" (the word used for her angry retorts) at people about things that are no big deal and even comments on how she "rarely loses her temper". After reading both the first and second books, she has lost her temper more times that i can count over the more insignificant things imaginable. If she were a real person, she would not have any friends outside of the her family which has to love her. Sookie is in dire need of a personality makeover.
A fun read. Book 1 was more interesting but I've already started Book 3 so I am not complaining. This is an easy read for entertainment only--and I love the True Blood Series on TV.

This book is when things really start getting quite a bit different from the TV series. Actually, as someone that loves the show, I had a lot of fun reading a different version of the events in season two. It's a good and fast read, perfect for during those little breaks while you're on the bus or waiting in line somewhere. The story and characters are fun, and it actually got me a bit hooked after a little while.

I enjoyed the whole series, all eight of them. This one, as each of them is exciting and humorous and the story of Sookie only gets better with each book. This author has a tremendous imagination and the characters are believable. You won't find my copies up for trade, I'm keeping them!

I enjoyed the first book and was ready for the 2nd. I turned out to be just as fun as the first. I just love the main character Sookie Stackhouse. She is a trip! She's a refreshing treat from a mundane day. Having two good-looking vampires (Bill & Eric) doesn't hurt either. In this book there is actually two mysteries going on. One takes place in Dallas. The vampires there need Sookie's mind reading skills and Bill goes along for her protection. Before they leave for Dallas though, a co-worker and friend of Sookie's is murdered and someone she knows is innocent is framed for it. And to top all of that off, there is another supernatural being for them to deal with. This book is non-stop fun and excitement. I will continue on with the series and highly recommend anyone who liked the first one to stick with it.

I really enjoyed the second installment of the Sookie Stackhouse series. I am really starting to like her alot--she is definitely not as much of a prude as she was in book one. I would like to see her with Eric, though, instead of Bill.

I am new to the sookie stackhouse phenominan but I love them so far. I cant wait to read the next one and find out what happens. A must read for anyone interested in the supernatural!
For those of you unfamiliar with this series, this book is the second (the first being Dead Until Dark). I would highly recommend reading this, and all the books in this series, in correct order because they do build on previous volumes.
If you are contemplating getting this book and are only familiar with this series via the "TrueBlood" HBO TV series, then you will be a bit confused, since the books and the HBO series differ quite a bit in plot and action. However, that also happens to be a plus: I loved the HBO series, and it inspired me to get the books to fill the time before the next season starts. To my delight, I find that many of the same characters are there, but the story line is different so it ends up being a BONUS because now I have the written adventures of Sookie Stackhouse AND different television adventures of Sookie Stackhouse! There is enough simularity between the written and TV versions that you can see where HBO got a lot of their material, but the bottom line is that if you were hesitating about getting the books because you've already seen the first couple of seasons of TRUEBLOOD then go ahead and get the book because it's definitely worth it.

Once again, the mix is that of vampire romance and murder mystery. The storyline holds something for everyone and keeps your attention. In some ways, the plot is thin and predictable with a "could have seen it coming" brand of humor. Nonetheless, I'm ashamed to admit I'm enjoying these books.

Okay, so I was looking forward to this one... but, it so many kinds of let me down. I don't think I can even read the other ones now. I don't know if it was because I watched the second season of True Blood before I read this one, but it just didn't live up to the first book. I feel like this one just didn't have as much of a good story as the first one--which was about equal in length, I believe, and had a much better plot.

Great! Having just finished watching the 2nd season of True Blood, they changed a lot of things from the second book. Both versions are great! I'm just waiting for Sookie to kick some butt and really be able to defend herself, without the help of vampire blood. We'll see. Have fun reading and let your imagination run wild!

I love Sookie Stackhouse. What a great book.
Loved it
Awesome! I loved how Eric is starting to become more involved in Sookie's life. The ending with Bill was great to see how he really is connected with others in Bon Temps. I really love the book story much more than the True Blood story line but it is neat to put a face with the characters!

Really liked this one with the intro of the werewolves. I'm anxious to see how the story unfolds on the HBO series and how much is changed/similar to the books.
Loved this book. As with the entire Sookie Stackhouse series, it is a light and funny story with a bit a gore and spookiness for a delicious shiver. I'm reading the whole series as I've added all Ms. Harris' works to my list of favorites.

If you are a fan of true blood the tv series on hbo the books just do not follow the series all that well but both are fun and enjoyable. Lets face it you are not reading thses books for thier literary value but for fun and escapism right? and that is what Charline Harris gives us in Sookie and her cast of "Supe" friends and humans. You want fun and fantasy a bit of horror all wrpped around a passionate love story well then read this book!

I enjoyed this book better than the first. I found this book to be a quicker read. Plus, it gets more into the shapeshifter and vampire culture, which makes it more interesting. The first book took too long to get into all of that. At times I still don't like Sookie and at times still I don't like Bill. Overall, it is pure escapist literature.

This is book two in the Southern Vampire series. The series is a twist on the vampire craze. Vampires are now mainstreaming into society, although the adjustment isn't easy. Sookie Stackhouse is a telepathic human who falls in love with Bill the Vampire in book one. In book two, we get to meet more vampires (who I personally find more interesting than Bill), as the vampires use her abilities to their advantage. This is a fun, quick read.

2nd book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. The True Blood TV series has me curious.... but I'm surprised that this book series is popular. The writing is terrible. The plot jumps around, several sentences don't make any sense in the context of the story, but the characters are rather interesting. And so I will read on... very strange.
The tv show is good but as always the books are better. On the plus side they are enough different that whether you read the book or see True Blood first you do not ruin the other.
Our favorite cocktail waitress is back again for another adventure. Living Dead in Dallas introduces us to the various political goings on in the vampire world. Sookie and the Vampire Bill have been invited to Dallas. The Dallas Vampire's need Sookie's telepathic skills and she is drafted by Eric, the Viking vampire sheriff of Area 5 to help them. Sookie feels obligated to Eric as he has recently saved her from a very nasty creature with a venomous bit. Off to Dallas she and Bill will go.
Of course things are not as they seem. With a very scary group of religious nuts and a suicidal vampire, Sookie is soon overwhelmed with all that is happening. To complicate life even more, back in Bon Temps one of Sookie's co-workers meets a grisly end. Life will never be simple for Sookie and Bill, but Sookie never expected this much action.

I really enjoyed this one! It was quite exciting and very interesting to see Eric's character develop more - I am starting to really like him! From the episode of _TrueBlood_ that I saw, I doubt that the next season will be much like this book, but I certainly enjoyed Sookie's adventures - as well as the introduction of more supernatural creatures (yay, werewolves!)! The only disappointing thing was that Sam was hardly in it... I am looking forward to reading the next book!!

This is the 2nd book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I love Sookie's attitude & straight forwardness. Another good book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. At first I had my doubts but as the plot grew the story became more and more interesting.
Ok, so I watched True Blood on tv and had never heard of Charlaine Harris. I started this series out of boredom and read the whole series straight through in less than a week. Can't wait for the next one. All of the books are a tad repetitive on the character description (how many times do I have to hear about Sam's halo of strawberry blonde hair or Eric's Nordic good looks?) but very entertaining, light hearted and thoroughly addictive. You won't be sorry.

As and an excellent read. Charlaine Harris' sounthern Vampire mysteries are a wonderful blend of mystery and paranormal, with just a smidge of romance on the side. A very satisfying and compelling read , even those who might have missed the first book "Dead Until Dark" won't be unable to be up to speed quickly and enjoy the book. But beware, you can't read just one, once you've visited Sookie's world, you'll feel the need to read them all.

Fun read, couldn't put it down! I read the book the night I got it, and finished it in a few hours. It's entertaining, and I really like the characters. There are some typos in this printing, but that's okay, the story still moves along just fine. A great 2nd book in the series! I look forward to reading the others.

I enjoyed this one as much as I enjoyed the first one. It was more violent and full of more sexiness, but that just made it better! Sometimes you have to wonder how one girl can get into so much mess, but then you have to suspend reality when reading these books anyway because of the whole vampire/shapeshifter/etc thing. Moreso than the first one, you come to see as a reader just the sort of discrimination that vampires face. It's strikingly familiar to anyone who watches the news today, which is full of people declaring hatred for lifestyles and people that they understand little about. Sookie first investigates the murder of a friend, which leads her to an interesting sex party. It's not for people with delicate natures, but I found it a lot of fun. But be warned, this one is extra bloody and extra violent. After solving one mystery, Sookie is sent out on loan to help a vampire coven in Dallas find a missing member. This storyline makes clear that vampires, while making many mistakes in line with their nature, also make very human mistakes. I found the idea of a vampire wanting to die very... sweet. But, I do have a history of Anne Rice and her vampires are the most angst-filled in the genre, by far. Did I like this second installment in the Southern Vampire Mysteries? I LOVED it.
This was a great book, I've read most of the series already and this was one of my favorites ones!

Life with vampires is difficult for Sookie. She used to spend all her time trying to stay out of trouble, being one of the most seemingly boring people you could meet, until a vampire walked into Merlottes bar one day. And everything changed. Now Sookie cant seem to stay out of trouble. I swear, every time you turn around, theres Sookie in trouble again!
The second book in the series, like on True Blood, takes place mostly in Dallas where Sookie is helping to investigate the disappearance of a vampire. And while the show does operate in parallel with this book, there are enough differences in this one that it kept me much more entertained. There were times during the first book that I thought I was going to fall asleep because the TV show had mirrored it so closely. The second one did not suffer from this problem, and I liked it a lot more because of it.

The second book in the series, like on True Blood, takes place mostly in Dallas where Sookie is helping to investigate the disappearance of a vampire. And while the show does operate in parallel with this book, there are enough differences in this one that it kept me much more entertained. There were times during the first book that I thought I was going to fall asleep because the TV show had mirrored it so closely. The second one did not suffer from this problem, and I liked it a lot more because of it.
