Written by Kenneth Giggal and illustraed with original paintings by the celebrated Dutch artist Cornelis de Vries, this book was a delight to read. DeVries's ship portraits are exquitite in their detail and provide an accurate representation of the original ships. The text is filled with tales of each ship and their place in history. I found it to be most intereting. This is a large book that will fit nicely on your coffee table but not in your bookcase.

This is one book that I started and could not put down. I read it all in one afternoon. It deals with tragedy and grief, with the horses as a background theme. I was introduced to a number of very interesting characters through a series of flashback memories as the story unfolded. I liked the fact that the action was unpredictable. I never knew where the story would lead next.

The Literary Horse disproves the notion that horse stories are only for children. The writing is excellent, proving that horses and serious literature are compatable. Do not buy this book for your 12 year old. But, do enjoy it yourself.

I read this book years ago and thorougly enjoyed it. It is a collection of real life stories recorded by Federal Writers Project fieldworkers in Nebraska in the 1930s and 1940s.
The book will be of interest to those interested in horses, forklore and American history. In here are tales of men who made a living supplying horses at a time when horses were a major source of power and transportation in the American west. I was amazed at some of the antics that went on in those days. Some of these guys make used car salesment look like angels in comparison.

This is an exceptional book written by an exeptional man. I really enjoyed hearing about the dog, but also enjoyed learning about the family who adopted him. It is rare to read a book about a fully functioning family where people love and support each other to this degree. The two adopted sons grow up with this dog to become fine young men. This is a book that restores ones faith in humanity.

This is a book of short stories and abundant, incredable illustrations. I enjoyed it immensely because I delight in beautiful artwork. The book was published in 1978 so all of the artwork is dated, which adds a sort of charm to the book. And, I even learned a bit about ships and those whose lives are enriched by the seas. All in all, it is a lovely, large coffee-table art book.
