After the Liberators: A Father's Last Mission, a Son's Lifelong Journey
Review Date: 5/18/2006

Rare, hard to find first person narrative about a son who seeks details of his navigator father's war death during WWII. If you are a WWII buff, or a veteran, this personal memoir is quite moving and interesting. Inscribed by author, inside front cover. Many photos in the book.

American Indian Poetry: The Standard Anthology of Songs and Chants
Review Date: 7/20/2006

Excellent book for those interested in Native American culture; original was printed in 1918, reprinted in 1934, then in 1962, so these really are authentic chants and poems reflecting all Native American peoples in the North American continent.

This hardbound book discusses both slaveholders and slaves -- origins, Colonial Era, American Revolution, Antebellum slavery, slave life, the end of slavery. The author is a professor of history. Good book for American history buffs, students and teachers of African-American studies or American history.

This is the memoir of an American officer who was captured during the Invasion of Sicily in 1943 (as my own dad was). It tells just what it was like to be a POW of the Germans. The author ended up in a POW camp in Poland, then at the war's end, in Russia. If you like true narratives of WWII, don't miss this one. (My dad escaped, declining to be a guest of the German govt., and walked/fought his way across Italy to Switzerland. Glad he didn't have to go through what this man did for the next two years!)

Fortunately, this book was published in 1986, when many of Bergman's friends, family members and associates were still living. This is an excellent, well-balanced biography of a very complex woman. Great actress; lousy mother. I couldn't put it down!

The Awakening, and Selected Stories (Modern Library College Editions)
Review Date: 5/4/2006

"The Awakening" is one of my favorite short stories! Here's a chance to read more of her work, too. Kate Chopin was a feisty feminist writer long before the Women's Movement. Good summer reading and also great for students, teachers, or just for an addition to your permanent bookshelf.

Behind Rebel Lines: The Incredible Story of Emma Edmonds, Civil War Spy
Review Date: 10/31/2008
Helpful Score: 3

When I ordered this book from our book swap group, I didn't realize it was for ages 10-14! Nevertheless, being interested in the history of women who served during the Civil War, I went ahead and read it. I would rate this book as more appropriate for 12, 13 and 14 year olds. Most younger children would not have the historical background on Civil War battles and issues to hold their interest. This book would be good for young women, 12-14, since it focuses on a strong female role model, and for any young person interested in Civil War history.
