This book should become a MUST READ for all college curriculums. It's premise is ageless. It encompasses the entire experience of being black in the South as well as Jim Crow Laws and being white in the South. Richard Wright tells his story in a personal way while giving historical information about a time that our country should not be proud of, but must not be forgotten lest it be repeated. Whites should come away with more sensitivity to the struggles of todays blacks. (Using Mr. Wrights terminology for ethnicity.)

There are lots of characters in this book, nevertheless, I could not put it down. Dobyns really keeps one drawn in to the story. I read this in one afternoon. Nice surprise ending.

Wow, this book was great. It's really got not so much to do with color as with relationships one has with one's past, present, and future, as well as one's family. This guys mom teaches him about history and getting past people's ignorance and about forgiving your parents and how important it is to know where you come from no matter what. She was amazing. She probably just felt exhausted raising 12 children but this is a great read for anyone trying to figure out their relationship with their parent and/or their past. It's amazing.

Truthfully, I really got very little out of it. No specifics are given. I'm pretty well-read in philosophy and Eastern religions and this is not written from that perspective although it's advertised that way. It has some good points, but it's one mans account of his journey and a good night's read.

I'm reading all of Ms. Rendell's books. This is the best one so far. Her characters are so vivid you feel you know them as your neighbors. The crime is random for the characters but well thought out by the author. She leads us to this crime, baiting us along the way with well informed reasoning. It was an excellent read I could not put down.

Fantastic! Not normally my kind of read, but a friend said I would like it and I really did. Funny, witty, but not silly or childish. Not your normal romance novel. Smart and charming with real chracters. Good story and great writing!

Rudyard Kipling is not for everyone. He is a man of his time. As had been said by critics he is a fascist and discriminator to anyone who is not a white male, BUT there is no mistaking he ability to weave a story line, his ability to make a story come alive in your head, and that is why he is still a pertinent author today. His prose is delightful if taken from his angle and his terminology is unbounding. It's hard to find an author with the use of the American language that Kipling has. For history and literature, Kipling should be read.

An absolute must read for everyone. Tony Morrison is one the most skillful writers of our time. Color, race, ethnicity means nothing. She is a must read for her skill as a writer and what you will learn without realizing while reading fabulous stories that though fiction are undoubtably true for some. We will all grow through her "fiction".
