Summer Sisters is an adult read about two friends from young through adult, Caitlin stays on Martha's Vinyard every summer with her father and has invited Vix from Santa Fe to stay and this becomes an every summer happening. Vix becomes a part of this privileged family through these summer visits so the family pay her Harvard education while Caitlin is the wild one who chooses to live the lavish life in Europe instead of school. It is a good fast read.

I loved this book; I did not want it to end. It starts out rather slow but after a few chapters it picks up nicely. It made me laugh and made me cry. I wish Judy Blume would do a sequel to it.

I didn't really care for this book. I thought that the way the book was written was confusing. At least Judy Blume puts each name at the top of the pages so that you can following who is thinking and saying what. I thought that there were too many characters to keep track of - I kept getting them mixed up with who belonged to whom. I really didn't like the way the book ended - to much like a television series finally (never really tied up the loose ends).

Since this is the first "adult" novel I have read from one of my favorite childhood authors, I was ill-prepared for some of the mature content, and found myself blushing, especially near the beginning of the book (this book is NOT intended for the audience of "Blubber!") However, Blume's writing style has changed very little from her young adult novels, making this an easy read, and I absolutely loved the story of two girls tied by a childhood bond, yet struggling through their relationship as they matured. Victoria's character is especially authentic and relatable, and my heart went out to her as she dealt with the betrayals of a friend she loved dearly.

This book is my all time favorite book. It reminds me of one of my friends and me growing up. The book discusses two friends and their lives throughout the years, how they intertwine and grow apart from each other. The girls learn from each other's mistakes and betrayal of the friendship. I usually read this book once or twice a year because it is a very intriguing book. I usually don't like books that switch off from the past and back to the present, but this book has a natural flow that doesn't confuse or frustrate the reader.

Growing up a Judy Blume fan, I was sure she was the only woman alive who truly understood how it felt to be a fourth grader. Later in life, I was convinced she was the only "young adult" author who knew just what it was like to be a teenaged girl on the verge of womanhood. Now, I have no doubt in my mind that Judy Blume understands being a woman better than any writer, any artist, and she has shown us this in the pages of Summer Sisters.

Typical story about the relationship between two girls who were childhood friends, but something happened so they went their separate ways and reunite as adults. Judy Blume does an awesome job of filling in the details. Heartbreaking at times. I didn't know Judy Blume had any "adult" books, and this one pleased me as a grown-up just as much as her "Fudge" books did as a kid.

A really good book, no doubt. But I'm not sure if there is anyone who is so flat as a character as Caitlin in real life. She's sort of like how someone would draw a bad girl, if they had never actually known (or been) a bad girl themselves. And this question kept popping up in my head throughout the book: why did Victoria stay? That also seemed out of character.
Anyway, this is a review, not a character discussion. And as a review I highly recommend this book. I did thoroughly enjoy it. Would love to see the movie adaptation some day!

This novel was excellent from the beginning page until the end. Caitlin, a wild child, invites Vix, who is more conservative and quiet, to Martha's Vineyard for the summer. Summer after summer the girls return to the vineyard and as a reader, you literally are apart of their growth into woman hood. They experience new things together, first love, development of their bodies, and even "The Power" which they use on one another.
The story opens in the present day, with a phone call from Caitlin asking, more like telling, Vix if she will be the Maid of Honor at her Wedding. Then the story goes back to Vix and Caitlin's summer days, and all the events leading up to Caitlin's Marriage.
As the two girls mature to woman hood their differences tear them apart, especially when it comes to dating boys. Caitlin knows she is intimidating, and she uses that to her advantage. Vix; however, is the complete opposite.
Caitlin becomes too wrapped up in herself, and selfishly ruins Vix's sixteenth birthday party. Vix, devastated and hear-broken, leaves to live on her own, breaking off her friendship with Caitlin. Or so she wishes.

This was a very fast and enjoyable read. However, I was not as impressed by it as I remember being by Blume's young adults books as a young adult. Those challenged the reader (many of them were banned), while Summer Sisters doesn't stand out.

My first Judy Blume novel, and I'm not sure if I liked it or not!! The premise of the story is good, two friends, how they change and grow from the sixth grade to adulthood. How to explain Caitland... I can't, even she can't explain herself, and I guess that's the part I didn't like. She really not a very likable person, but Vix [Victoria] just keeps putting up with her. I don't think I could have.

I read this over Thanksgiving on Martha's Vineyard. I too worked my college summers on the Island and met my husband of 37 years while working there. Before that I'd lived in Colorado in a trailer park working with my former school roomate at an inn.
Our eldest son was overdue or else he'd have been born on the island. He taught high school across the sound for ten years and many of his students came from the island. I LOVED this book.

Great book... We all have to make choices, some are good and some are bad, but in the end you have to live by them. It is a story about love, life and friendships and learning to cope with day to day struggles of them all! Judy Blume is a great author and Summer Sisters is a must read!

I read this book a while ago, but I remember tearing through it. It was a quick read and very much a "Judy Blume" book for adults. If you liked her stuff growing up, or her adult stuff, then you will similarly appreciate this.

I loved this book and have reread it many times! As the book follows the two friends throughout their lives, the reader really feels like you get to know them. However, my only complaint is that Vix is written as the "all good" character while Caitlin is "all bad", with no shades of gray. With that said, I would still highly recommend this book.

It's Me Margaret (1972). Her latest effort, although published as an adult book, could just as easily have been on a YA list. It is, after all, the story of a teenage friendship between two girls, one rich, one poor, and it traces what happens to them as they grow up and eventually grow apart. The majority of the book covers the summers the girls spend together from ages 13 to 18 on Martha's Vineyard. Blume remains a pithy writer. Her dialogue is realistic, and her plotcoming-of-age slathered with jealousymoves right along through family troubles, boyfriends, college, and eventually, marriage. But Blume has also covered much of this materialmenstruation, masturbation, first sexual affairsin her books for young teens. Clearly, this book (which begins in the 1970s, Blume's heyday) was designed to welcome her now grown-up readers into the world of adult fiction. The problem is, most of them probably arrived there a long time ago. What we have here is a marketing ploy: the YA novel masquerading as an adult book in order to widen its audience and capitalize on the author's name. Her dialogue is realistic, and her plotcoming-of-age slathered with jealousymoves right along through family troubles, boyfriends, college, and eventually, marriage. But Blume has also covered much of this materialmenstruation, masturbation, first sexual affairsin her books for young teens. Clearly, this book (which begins in the 1970s, Blume's heyday) was designed to welcome her now grown-up readers into the world of adult fiction. The problem is, most of them probably arrived there a long time ago. What we have here is a marketing ploy: the YA novel masquerading as an adult book in order to widen its audience and capitalize on the author's name. Ironically, though, the audience who will most appreciate the trials and tribulations of friends Victoria and Caitlin as they try to grow up are the very people Blume seems trying so hard to get away from--teenage girls.

Judy Blume is an excellent author. I was incredibly excited when I saw she had adult novels. I adored her children and young adult books; unfortunately, I found her adult novels to be depressing in stead of hilarious. Well written, but not the "fun" read that I'd been expecting.

The story of a rather one-sided friendship is told in Judy Blume's SUMMER SISTERS. Victoria (Vix) meets Caitlin as young schoolmates, and for some reason although the two of them are worlds apart, Caitlin chooses Vix as her guest to summer with her family on Martha's Vineyard. Vix has always been the quiet one, and Caitlin is the wild and crazy one. And despite their differences, Vix seems to be attracted to Caitlin's life, including her family and Caitlin's' rather eccentric ways.
The story opens in the present (1990), with Vix receiving a call from Caitlin, saying she's inviting Vix to her wedding. The brief prologue sets the stage, with Vix a bit perturbed by the phone call and torn between being angry with Caitlin, but also thinking "summer sisters forever". It is obvious that there is a love-hate relationship between the two, or at least that is how Vix feels about her long time friend Caitlin.
Their summers together on Martha's Vineyard are full of fun and laughter. But as they get older, Caitlin's selfishness starts to show. Vix however takes it all without too much complaining, always finding reasons to forgive Caitlin. I got about 1/3 of the way through this book and chose to close it without finishing it. I've read many of Judy Blume's books and usually enjoy them. While I would never be called prudish, I found the amount of sexual conversation between two girls too young for those kinds of conversations inappropriate and disrespectful. I suspect the storyline may have been a good one further on, but the continual main theme of these types of conversations between these two girls was more than I wanted.
Judy Blume does not disapoint with this one.

I love Judy Blume's young reader books, so I was anxious to read her adult novels and started with Summer Sisters. What a waste of time! I'm not sure I want to pick up the others. I was disappointed three pages in. This is a depressing book about selfish people fixated on their own desires. If you want a happy ending, avoid this one. If you care about the characters you're reading about, don't be disappointed when you find no one to love in this book.
This book had a lot of sex in it, I must say. Perhaps that was the reality of the 70s and 80s ... not sure.
All in all, the book kept me reading, curious to find out what happens in the end. However, I can't say I liked any of the characters. Its 1977, Victoria (Vix) Leonard and Caitlin Somers arent best friends in school and we definitely from different socio-economic backgrounds. Vixs parents were married and they struggled to make ends meet. Having a child with a disability one of her brothers had Muscular Dystrophy didnt help the family situation. Caitlins parents were divorced and her family had money. Her mother was still living a bit of the hippy/love child lifestyle and she spent each summer with her father and her brother on the east coast at a beach house.
Every summer, Caitlin invited one of her classmates to spend the summer with her at her fathers home. This year, she chooses Vix. With much persuasion, Vixs persons agree to let her go and Vixs world is changed forever. She learns about her sexuality and first love while spending the rest of her summers with Caitlin at the shore.
Throughout their friendship, Caitlin often betrays Vix and now its years later and Caitlin has asked Vix to be the Maid of Honor at her wedding. And, despite some of the past betrayals, Vix agrees to this but she now has to work her way through the betrayals and what happened in their last summer together at the beach.
I really liked this coming-of-age story. Vixs loyalty to Caitlin despite her betrayals is sometimes hard to understand and but at most times easy to understand.

I'd been meaning for awhile to read one of Judy Blume's adult books, so a little bit ago I picked this one up at Costco. I finally got to reading it this weekend, and I have no idea why I waited so long! It was a great book â I laughed, I cried, I felt like I grew up with these girls.

A wonderful book!
I recieved this book as a gift from the author when she was staying at a hotel I worked at she signed it for me and left it at the front desk for me as a thank you for helping her during her stay. I tried numerous times to read it but it seemed too slow to get into after holding on to it for years when I got married it was one of the books I let go of to downsize and fit in our new apt, now after reading all the reviews I regret it and wish I had stuck it out and read it.
