Any good legal thriller is full of misdirection and surprise plot twists and this one is no different. Defense attorney Mickey Haller plays prosecutor along with his ex-wife Maggie McPherson, from the DA's office and investigator, Harry Bosch, LAPD. With all these wonderful characters and a crackpot defense lawyer, the roller coaster ride to justice is spectacular. Though the judge did get on my last nerve allowing the defense such leeway. I don't think he would have gotten away with most of his stunts in a real courtroom.

Either way, I plowed through this in one day. I just had to know how it ended. A surprise ending that wasn't really a surprise as it was setup early on if you were paying attention.

I was a little disappointed in Connelly's book - not as good as his others. Very slow through most of the first half, then a rushed consclusion.

Bleah! Really looked forward to another HB thriller. What I got is Harry taking a backseat to Mickey Haller, written in a confusing first/third person narrative and lackluster characters all around. Most of the Amazon reviews loved it, so, go figure...

Harry Bosch and his half-brother Mickey Haller team up to bring a killer to justice. Excellent story, combining two of my favorite Connelly characters. Told from the vantage point of both main characters in alternating chapters, the drama and suspense keeps moving throughout the book. So much so that you don't want to put it down for wanting to know what's going to happen next.

Another home run by Michael Connelly. Book 3 in the Mickey Haller series Connelly does a masterful job of writing, using first person when the chapters are more about Mickey, and third person when the chapters focus on Harry. This style works quite well. As the story progresses Harry calls in the services of his old girlfriend Rachel Walling, who blends into the tale quite nicely. Haller tries to use his own experience as a defender to anticipate all the moves of his opponent in court and most times is quite correct in his assumptions.

The plot is intriguing, the court scenes realistic and entertaining, and the characters are vividly portrayed. The surveillance details were informative and educational. From the opening scene to the final scene, the book held my interest and made me want to keep turning the pages to see what else happened. There were some places where the tension was very high and I thought I knew what was going to happen, but then something else happened instead. I would never have guessed the ending.

Definitely a book to read in one setting. You won't want to put it down.

I loved it, but then I love all his books. I loved the way he brought both Bosch and Haller together so well.

Connelly continues to treat his readers to great stories. I read it in 3 days. A must read for mystery fans.

I really enjoyed this book because of the story and focus on the personal and professional sides of the the prosecution team led by Mickey Haller. The pace and flow of the trial keeps you interested and makes it difficult to put the book down.

This fine novel by Michael Connelly brings together half-brothers Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch on the same side of the case. The LA District Attorney convinces Mickey to move to the prosecution side as a special prosecutor in a 24+ year-old case. The California Supreme Court has reversed the 24 year-old decision; instead of dropping the conviction (for time served), LA decides to retry it.

Haller decides to go over to the dark side in the second trial of Jason Jessup partly because he can name his own team. He decides on his former wife, Maggie McPherson (a deputy district attorney), as second chair and Harry Bosch, as their investigator.

Jason Jessup has been busy in prison those 24 years, trying to get someone to listen to his cries of innocence through his motions and appeals. Jessup was convicted of abducting and strangling a 12 year-old girl, Melissa Landy. Finally, Jessup gets the interest of the Genetic Justice Project, a group of lawyers (who run DNA tests and find that there is no trace of Jessup on the girls dress --DNA evidence predates this case).

The characters are well-drawn, the dialogue is on-target and the mystery is suspenseful. The story was so compelling that I couldnt put it down. This is an exceptional, tension-filled story.

Another excellent book by Michael Connelly. This one if full of twists and turns, keeps you reading FAST! I enjoy how the court room portion is not too technical or long and the ending, although not what I wanted appeared somewhat more realistic than some authors nice little unrealistic endings.

Michael Connelly can write an extremely good book! Sometimes an author can make a courtroom scene so boring and so long you just have to skip most of it, but Connelly hit this one right and you just want to keep reading because it gets better and better

Defense attorney Mickey Haller is approached by the district attorney and asked to work a case on their side, going after a previously-convicted child killer who has been released due to new DNA results. Even with misgivings, Mickey jumps on board, provided his ex-wife, Maggie McPherson, sits as his second chair. Mickey is still his bad-ass-attorney/detective self, but I was actually a little disappointed with this book from Michael Connelly this time. Detective Bosch works to help Mickey Haller and I did enjoy his portions in the book and while it did have a surprise ending, I felt it left the reader hanging, which of course could have been the author's intent, or it could have been the way this copy was abridged, then again, it could have just been the way the story was written. All-in-all, it was a good story, just not quite up to Connelly's previous excellence.

Longtime defense attorney Mickey Haller is recruited to change stripes and prosecute the high-profile retrial of a brutal child murder. After 24 years in prison, convicted killer Jason Jessup has been exonerated by new DNA evidence. Haller is convinced Jessup is guilty, and he takes the case on the condition that he gets to choose his investigator, LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.

Together, Bosch and Haller set off on a case fraught with political and personal danger. Opposing them is Jessup, now out on bail, a defense attorney who excels at manipulating the media, and a runaway eyewitness reluctant to testify after so many years.

With the odds and the evidence against them, Bosch and Haller must nail a sadistic killer once and for all. If Bosch is sure of anything, it is that Jason Jessup plans to kill again.

As with any Connelly novel, I was immediately sucked into the story and finished it pretty quickly. Harry Bosch takes a secondary role in this one, but I enjoyed thoroughly. Loved it and highly recommend.

In 1986, Twelve year old Melissa Landy was snatched from her front yard and later found dead. Jason Jessup was convicted of her murder. Now 24 years later, DNA from a semen stain on the little girl's dress points to Melissa's stepfather. Jessup's conviction was overturned and a new trial is ordered. Defense Attorney Mickey Haller is asked to cross the aisle and work for the prosecution on this case. He chooses his ex-wife, Maggie McPherson, to be second chair, and his half-brother, Harry Bosch, to be the lead investigator. When Jessup is released pending trial, Bosch makes sure there are eyes on him 24/7. Mickey and his team work to make sure Jessup doesn't get a chance to kill another innocent child.

This is an excellent addition to both the Harry Bosch series and the Mickey Haller series. The story is told by both men in alternating chapters. The story pulled me in quickly. I had a hard time putting this one down. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

Twenty-four years ago, every parent's nightmare comes true----a young girl is abducted and murdered. The man convicted of the crime uncovers new evidence that secures his release from a life sentence in prison. The District Attorney, however, is not convinced by this new evidence. He persuades Mickey Haller, well-known defense attorney, to cross the aisle' and accept the challenge of retrying the killer. The addition of Haller's half-brother, Detective Harry Bosch of the LAPD, to the prosecution team brings two of Michael Connolly's greatest characters together in the fight against an evil killer as he attempts to make fools of them all.
Throughout, I enjoyed the courtroom drama that unfolds as defense and prosecution lawyers argue their cases. Tension and a sense of urgency builds as it becomes clear to Detective Bosch that Jason Jessup, probably a serial predator, is planning something nefarious that could have serious repercussions. Bosch's tenaciousness in not relaxing his vigilance in his search for the truth contributes the crucial deductive element that ultimately brings it all together at the end.
