The characters are interesting and mostly likeable, though they had many flaws. This novel is about the present day crumbling estate of Wharton Park which has been in the Crawford family for many generations. A dairy is found and you are taken back to the 1930's, where many secrets and lots of suspense about the families are revealed. It was an interesting read and I thoroughly enjoyed it, staying up late to the satisfying end. Despite some bad reviews, I recommend this book.

Very interesting book, lots of suspense, lots of tears, but a very good book.
Lucinda Riley has written an exceptional romantic novel; secrets were kept within the Crawford family, to unfold later through the discovery of a diary. Julia Crawford seeks out her grandmother for the truth behind a love affair that nearly destroys Wharton Park, in England. Julia's grandmother reveals stories of the Crawford family, as well as others who were involved; some having lived at Wharton Park, as well as others who were involved during World War II in Thailand. Secrets kept, were revealed telling of love, passions, lies, and war. An exceptional, page-turner read
A nice love story with a sad beginning and a beautiful unexpected ending.
