I know this book has been reviewed to death, but I'll give it another kick. Stephanie Plum is the consumate bounty hunter noir. Sam Spade, Travis McGee and Mike Hammer now have competition...in pantyhose.
She lost her job as a lingerie buyer for a discount chain, and, when her life began to scrape bottom, her mother suggested she visit her cousin Vinnie, the bailbondsman, for a filing job. Unfortunately, that job had just been filled. But there was always skip tracing -- tracking down clients who have jumped bail.
Not being very shy, and needing money desperately, Stephanie takes the job. And, since finances were the driving factor, she decides to start at the top -- tracking a murder suspect, who happens to be a cop, who grew up in her neighborhood, who she once ran down in her fathers Buick, on purpose.
Anyway, Stephanie gets a crash course in bounty hunting, and picks up her share of scrapes and bruises along the way. And, though she continues to find her jumper, she is having a heck of a time bringing him in.
And then there is Stephanie's grandmother...
My wife nagged me to read this book, and I finally gave in. It is well written and entertaining. Every page is filled with action, and there are lots of light moments to keep the reader afloat. I enjoyed it very much, despite the moderately high estrogen levels. Since I was told the series gets better with the second and third novels, I guess I'll have to continue. I won't tell her I'm looking forward to it :o)

This book grabbed me from the first page and never let go. Stephanie Plum is one sassy, hysterically funny woman! I instantly connected with her. She isn't afraid to say what's on her mind and she'll get the bad guy if it kills her, which it almost does. The other characers are wonderfully three dimensional as well, and the one liner banter between her and Morelli can only make you wonder where it will all lead to.
She's a character you wish you could go out and have a drink with, because you know you'll be laughing all night long!

My aunt has been trying to get me to read this series for years. I joined PBS and saw these books referenced everywhere. Book 13 in the series came out so I figured, "Wow, must have a huge following." With a build-up like that, I expected to be let down when I finally caved in to read this. And I finished this book in one day. I absolutely loved it! Evanovich has a great way of being descriptive without making the reader's eye glaze over. The characters are so vivid and distinctive. Stephanie is a great lead - flawed, funny and real. Can't wait to read the next installment!
The first of a number of hilarious, entertaining books by Janet Evanovich. Stephanie Plum is the most interesting character I have come across in a long time. I highly recommend this and all the rest in this series.

Having grown up in the "Burg", I have to say I LOVE this series. Stephanie Plum is the quintessential "burgerbite" and, trust me when I say, the cast of characters including Grandma Mazur are true to life. I laughed out loud reading this book because Stephanie's family is exactly like I remember growing up. This series is a great read and once you start you'll be hooked.

Stephanie Plum is so smart, so honest, and so funny that her narrative charm could drive a documentary on termites. But this tough gal from New Jersey, an unemployed discount lingerie buyer, has a much more interesting story to tell: She has to say that her Miata has been repossessed and that she's so poor at the moment that she just drank her last bottle of beer for breakfast. She has to say that her only chance out of her present rut is her repugnant cousin Vinnie and his bail-bond business. She has to say that she blackmailed Vinnie into giving her a bail-bond recovery job worth $10,000 (for a murder suspect), even though she doesn't own a gun and has never apprehended a person in her life. And she has to say that the guy she has to get, Joe Morelli, is the same creep who charmed away her teenage virginity behind the pastry case in the Trenton bakery where she worked after school.
If that hard-luck story doesn't sound compelling enough, Stephanie's several unsuccessful attempts at pulling in Joe make a downright hilarious and suspenseful tale of murder and deceit. Along the way, several more outlandish (but unrelentingly real) characters join the story, including Benito Ramirez, a champion boxer who seems to be following Stephanie Plum wherever she goes.
Janet Evanovich shares an authentic feel for the streets of Trenton in her debut mystery (she developed her talents in a string of romance novels before creating Ms. Plum), and her tough, frank, and funny first-person narrator offers a winning mix of vulgarity and sensitivity. Evanovich is certainly among the best of the new voices to emerge in the mystery field of the 1990s.

I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting from this book. It seems like such a popular series. I won't say that I 'loved' it. I liked it. I found Stephanie to be a little annoying at times. I know she's supposed to be this bumbling crazy lady, but I dunno... It was a really easy read, read it in two nights and it's mindless reading, which was definitely welcome after the insanity of the past week or so. It's a worth a read if you need something read at the beach or on an airplane. If you want something with teeth, skip this one for now.

Stephanie Plum is a lot of fun. Try her out as a companion for an evening and you will chuckle all the way through the book as Stephanie bumbles through her new career as a bounty hunter. The book seemed a little slow and dragged on some. I also didn't enjoy Stephanie Plum particularly. Her vocabulary was too rough for me. I guess it would be believable for a bounty hunter. The book was recommended to me, but I don't think I'll continue in the series.

Normally I read suspense and mystery thrillers. I'm not much into light reads but this book literally made me laugh out loud. I would bust out laughing and start a new page and just bust out laughing again still thinking about the previous page. Stephanie is one funny, clumsy, airhead klutz with a funny kooky grandmother and neither should be allowed to hold a gun or drive a car. I had to hurry over to my box of books page and quickly order every single Janet Evanovich book ever wrote.

What a fun-loving quirky series. Enjoyed Evanovich's entire Stephanie Plum series and can't wait until #16 comes out. Stephanie gets into so much trouble because she is not a good bounty hunter. However, she still seems to figure out who "done it" in spite of herself. It took me a bit to get into her character since most of my mystery reads are from more serious crime writers. Evanovich's Plum series gives you a more light-hearted mystery. Fun read.

I am sorry that I procrastinated in starting to read this series. I so thoroughly enjoyed this first book - it had me laughing out loud several times. I finished the book in record time and immediately started the next one as I was so involved with the characters and wanted to see what happened next. The main character and the writing style reminded me a lot of Kinsely Milhome in the Sue Grafton alphabet series books. I've read number 6 of this series and laughed out loud, so decided to find out how it all started.
The beginning of this book hit me wrong (when she was a young girl), but once some of the characters started interacting (especially Stephanie Plum's grandmother and the introduction of Lula), I found a place to smile and even laugh again. So I'm going on with the next. They're a quick read with improbable and unforgetable situations. If something goes wrong, you know Stephanie Plum is probably involved. She's good natured, has a pet hamster (gotta love that!) and the worst luck with cars - but nothing stops her from doing what she sets out to do (even if it involves a number of u-turns).

This book was so funny I laughed out loud in several places. The ditzy stephanie is a joy to read, but I think my favorite character is her grandmother. The whole dinner table scene had me laughing so hard I almost cried.
This is the first in a series about a Jersey girl out of work who blackmail's her cousin into a job as a bounty hunter. She bungles everything but manages some success through it all with the help of fellow mysterious bad boy bounty hunter Ranger. Her bungling and not-so-smart choices provide great comedy. I couldn't stop laughing. This is not a romance novel.
I had been meaning to start the series a while back and I could kick myself for waiting so long. Now I'm addicted.

My Wife and I have been looking for this one for quite a while. Living in New Jersey and running Friends of the Library Book Sales, we have had no shortage of people looking for the beginning of this series, and recommending the series to us.
I would say this isn't the height of literature. It's gritty, course and quite disturbing in parts (though not too graphic). The comedy is in Stephanie Plum's character. New Jerseyans like the series for its geograpical references and realistic descriptions of life in the state.
It's certainly both an easy read and quite a page-turner.

This book was cute and it held my interest, but I probably would have liked it better had I read it in the mid-90s... it was pretty dated so many of the funnier entries fell sort of flat.

In this book, the first of the Stephanie Plum series, we meet Stephanie Plum, a lady who is looking for a new job since she lost her old job as a lingerie buyer. Unable to find any other job, she ends up in her cousin Vinnie's office. He is a bail bondsman and she becomes a bounty hunter.
She's got no idea how to do the bounty hunting gig but she has no money, loses her new car to repossession and has started to hock all her small appliances to stay afloat. She finds out there is a large reward for Joe Morelli, with whom she has a small history that started in his father's garage and resulted in, many years later, her running him over with her father's Buick. Now he's back in her life as a bail jumper and she's ready to bring him in. Except she's not sure how to do it. In the mean time, she is learning the ropes on small time jumpers and getting tips from Ranger, another bounty hunter. She's also run afoul of the local boxing champ, who turns out to be a crazy psycho who gets his kicks from hurting and degrading women. So, she's chasing Morelli while she has look over her shoulder to make sure the boxer doesn't get her first.
It was a funny read. Some of the humor seemed a bit forced. But there it was still enough to keep me turning the pages and there were a few times I'd laugh out loud and get strange looks from my husband. Stephanie seemed "real" and I could relate to her. I didn't get her connection to Morelli. The chemistry just wasn't happening for me. There were a few times in the book when I was just like "MACE HIM ALREADY!!" But alls well that ends well. She collects her "body money" and solves the crime at the same time. The ending was a not as predictable as I thought it was going to be. On to book 2.
This book made me laugh out loud in so many parts. My family thought I was nuts! It got me hooked on the series.
This was a book that I just had to keep so that I could re-read it. Even after a second time, it's still quite funny. It was nice reminiscing over scenes I forgot from the first time around, but I don't think I laughed as hard as I did the first time that I read this book. Still, it's something that definitely must be read once.
The characters in this book are funny and real. You can picture each of them in your mind. I laughed so hard at times I had to put the book down and then I couldn't put it down. For all her stumbling you can't help cheering Stephanie Plumb. Sometimes not knowing how to be a bounty hunter may be the best way to get your man.
Very funny and suspenseful.

My new obcession!! I can't get enough of Stephanie, her crew and their antiics! This is a total departure from what a normally read and I can't read fast enough.
When Stephanie is up against a wall newly divorced, unemployeed and broke she finds a way to make ends meet, bounty hunting. If that isn't enough her first assingment, a guy from her past, Joe Morelli. Hot hunk of Italian stud who took her virginity and broke her heart and she's never forgotten. Trying to bring him in wasn't easy and lead her into a mystery envloving some shady characters. She and Joe end up working together to prove his innocense before he surrenders to her so she can collect the bounty.
Couldn't put it down had to know how Steph was going to get her man! It was seemed pretty unlikely wtih her help, Grandma Mazur. The electicity between Joe and Stephanie was pretty hot. Loved it!

I really enjoyed this book. I originally read it as part of a anthology. Fell in love with Stephanie Plum and Janet Evanovich with this book.
Light, easy to read mystery. Stephanie Plum, a new bounty hunter, is an interesting character. Charming humor.
Very good book. She makes me laugh. I didn't start with #1 but from here out I am going to read them in order.
This book was entertaining from beginning to end! Now I'm hooked on Stephanie Plum!
Too funny- what a great bunch of characters. I found myself falling for Morelli!
An excellent and funny book.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to continuing with the series. It is easy to read and full of comedy while also including situations that are scary and suspenseful. The main character is easy to relate to with her sassy, stubborn attitude.
Fun book.
I very much enjoyed this book, I read it in one sitting. The pace was quick and light although there were some serious parts. Easy and enjoyable reading
I enjoyed this book more than I expected. Very fast paced, funny and suspenseful.

Great summer read!
I thought this book was just ok...after reading so many good reviews of how funny it was, I guess I expected a really good read. I did find it amusing at times, but nothing that kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to read more...like you do with a really good book. I continued to read it hoping to find out what everyone else was raving about, but sadly, I can not say that I found it.
This is the first book in a great series by Janet Evanovich. This series is about a young woman from New Jersey, Stephanie Plum, who becomes a bounty hunter. Janet is a great writer, and all her books are very funny and enjoyable to read!
LOVE Janet Evanovich and Stephanie Plum! You will fall in the with the characters, and laught out loud, plus read the reast of the 15 or so books in the serious. Easy Read!
What an engaging book! If it wasn't for having to work, I could have finished it in one sitting! Evanovich has a delighful balance of comedy and suspense. If you like Charlaine Harris books, you will most likely like Janet Evanovich books as well!
This is a hilarious series of funny storied books.
Unfortunately Janet doesn't know how to turn on the heat for the romantic side of her stories.
I read one book and then had to find them all.

The original Stephanie Plum novel. Stephanie loses her job, and decides to work for her cousin as a bounty hunter. Her first job is to track down her ex-boyfriend who is now a cop on the run. But, Stephanie gets her man, with a lot of help.

For all you Plum fans out there--this is the book that started it all!
Every book that Janet Evanovich writes is excellent. I have read all of the Stephanie plum series that has been out and they are so good.
A tough Jersey girl becomes a bounty hunter to make money. Her first case, a cop that she has a "history" with. Can she find him before the cops do?
Always a FUN, quick read; soon to be a movie in 2012.
Great read. Can't wait for the next audio book to come in. Nice carry on story line.

Love Love Love the series. A co-worker and I quote the characters often.
This is the first in the popular Stephanie Plum series. Stephanie is a ditzy, lovable young woman without many marketable skills who decides to become a bounty hunter in Trenton, NJ. This hilarious romp is an entertaining read that will keep you turning the pages. Stephanie makes up for her lack of bounty hunter skills with a determination and perseverance that will quickly endear her to you. "One For The Money" will leave you laughing and looking forward to the next in this series by Janet Evanovich.

Great first Plum novel.

So funny. Loved it.
A really fun, light read. It's a little dated, but to the point that it's kind of kitschy cool. And the story and writing hold up, of course. My first Janet Evanovich book, but I'll read at least one ore two more in this series.
Fun read.

What a great book. Stephanie's escapades had me laughing.
Fantastic!
i have devored every one of the books in this series. LOVE THEM!!
A nice, quick read with some good laughs.
This is where it all began. Stephanie Plum fans first fell in love with this bumbling bounty hunter as soon as they read this book (Or in this case, listened to it). CJ Critt is excellent at distinguishing voices for each character. Not recommended listening while driving ebcause you will laugh too hard and may end up all over the road! ;)
My wife claimed these books were "laugh out loud." I did on occasion and, despite being an easy read, I did enjoy the book. Stephanie is a great character that I look forward to following in the future.
Funny...strong language
Very funny - especially the grandmother!
First in the series about Stephanie Plum. Very humorous!
A friend of mine suggested the Stephanie Plum series to me and gave me her copy of One for the Money, which was given to her by her sister, which was given to her by her boss, and so on and so on. The mysteries may not be as in depth as some other series, but the characters are truly captivating and Evanovich's style keeps you turning the pages.

This book went fast! I'll certainly be reading the rest of this series by Janet Evanovich, the next one being Two for the Dough. I love the main character, Stephanie Plum. She's just so... normal! I like that. And she's tough, too. She kind of had to be strong in order to make it through this book in one piece! Because of her money troubles, Stephanie signed up with her cousin, Vinnie, (gee, that makes me think of a certain movie!), to be a bounty hunter. The only problem is, the guy she's supposed to be looking for is an old crush, and he's just as charming as ever.

First in the series about Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter. The characters are wonderful and the suspense of wondering if Stephanie was going to make it thru yet-another misadventure kept me reading long into the night. Great series.
Just starting this author with this series and what a great book! Funny and fast - keeps you involved! Can't wait to get through the other 11!
First novels this funny and self-assured come along rarely; dialogue this astute and raunchy is equally unusual. The gutsy heroine introduced here is Stephanie Plum of Trenton, N.J., a recently laid-off lingerie buyer who has no job, no car and no furniture. She does have a hamster, a deranged grandmother, two caring parents and several pairs of biking shorts and sports bras. Finding work with her cousin Vinnie, she becomes a bond hunter and scrounges money enough to buy a gun, a Chevy Nova and some Mace. Her first assignment is to locate a cop accused of murder. Joe Morelli grew up in Stephanie's neighborhood. Possessed of legendary charm, he relieved Stephanie of her virginity when she was 16 (she later ran over him with a car). In her search, Stephanie catches her prey, loses him and grills a psychotic prizefighter, the employer of the man Morelli shot. She steals Morelli's car and then installs an alarm so he can't steal it back. Resourceful and tough, Stephanie has less difficulty finding her man than deciding what she wants to do with him once she's got him. While the link between the fighter and the cop isn't clear until too late in the plot, Evanovich's debut is a delightful romp and Stephanie flaunts a rough-edged appeal.

This book was loaned to me by a co-worker and I am SO grateful that she did!! I used to be an avid reader when I was younger, but getting married, having kids and all that goes with the daily grind of life put that love of reading on the back burner. My co-worker knew I would love this book (and series) and this book is what actually rekindled my love for reading! I couldn't put this book down until it was done. It is definitely a series that you will want to read in order if you intended to read them all, but any one of the books are a good stand alone read.

I was a schooldbus driver at the time and when you are sitting waiting for the kids to come to the bus or take a school trip, you can't be without the next one!

Well worth the hype. I was caught up from the very first page. This is a great story with a great, spunky main character. There was never a dull moment with Stephanie. Can't wait to read about all her other exploits. Ms. Janet is a great story teller who sprinkles thrills and comedy throughout to keep the reader entertained. I was thoroughly entertained.
A very great mystery with lots of laughs!
Fantastic book - the Stephanie Plum series is wonderful. Funny and refreshing - you won't be dissapointed.
Stephanie Plum is a heroine you can root for. It's easy to relate to her plucky, very girly, take charge attitude. I will definately be picking up more books from this series.
The first in a series by Janet Evanovich, I was hooked from the beginning.
Most enjoyable book. Evanovich is a humorous writer. I liked the way she writes.
The first in the series of Stephanie Plum(bounty hunter)novels. Great read.
This is the first book in the Stephanie Plum series. She becomes a bounty hunter for her sleasy cousin Vinnie. She takes the case of finding her old lover. This book is more humor than mystery, but hooks you on wanting to read the rest of the series.
The Stephanie Plum Novels are a quick, fun summer read. I started this series and wasn't able to put them down until I had read them all! They are addictive!
Start of a great series.

Excellent start to a great series, I think this one is still my favorite.. it got me hooked
Funny, witty, great characters, fast-paced. The female protagonist is a bounty hunter. There are lots more to read in this series.

Stephanie Plum is a hoot. Amateur bounty hunter, former lingerie buyer. Meet her kooky family in the story that started it all!! I LOVED this book!
The first in the Stephanie Plum series, and it's a real hoot! I'm a Jersey girl (although not from Trenton, or "the burg" as Stephanie calls it), and I think Ms. Evanovich gets the kick butt tone just right (and the humor is dead on, too).
Great read!
Great read!

So glad that I took everyone's advice and ventured outside my normal genres and read this book. I loved it. Funny and fast paced. It was awesome. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Watch out, world. Here comes Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey. She's a product of the "burg," a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six. Now Stephanie's all grown up and out on her own, living five miles from Mom and Dad's, doing her best to sever the world's longest umbilical cord. Her mother is a meddler, and her grandmother is a few cans short of a case. Out of work and out of money, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty, Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin, Vinnie, into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, fearless bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook. Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli is also the irresistible macho pig who took Stephanie's virginity at age sixteen and then wrote the details on the bathroom wall of Mario's Sub Shop. There's still powerful chemistry between these two, so the chase should be interesting. It could also be extremely dangerous, especially when Stephanie encounters a heavyweight title contender who likes to play rough. Benito Ramirez is known for his brutality to women. At the very least, his obsession with Stephanie complicates her manhunt and brings terror and uncertainty into her life. At worst, it could lead to murder. Witty, fresh, and full of surprises, One for the Money is among the most eagerly awaited crime novels of the season.

Trenton native Stephanie Plum is out of work, out of money, and her car is in repo-hell. She starts working for her perverted cousin Vinnie as a bail bondsman. Funny with characters that will grow on you as you proceed through this series.

This book was great. It had a lot of humor and a lot of suspensful moments. Had a lot of everything really! Stephanie Plum is hysterical, but at the same time one tough chick! You think she has no idea what she's doing, but totally surprises you with her actions.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
This is a GREAT series to get into!! It is funny, witty and sometimes sexy!
This series of books was recommended to me by a friend. I had never read any of this author's books, but I had heard she was very good. I enjoyed this book. The main character, Stephanie Plum, is experiencing life in an unusual way. She's having to sell off her belongings in order to keep her head above water...and then the adventures begin and she can handle them all because she's one tough cookie!
Evanovich turns the mystery/detective novel on its head. This is one very funny book. The grandmother alone is worth the price of admission. I've now read Two also, and I believe Evanovich is pretty consistently entertaining. This is light summer reading, and will have you laughing out loud.
Definitely good to read this one before the others in the series.
If you like mysteries with a bit of humor you have to read this book. It's the first in a series that is up to number 11.

THis was the first of the series, and I enjoyed it. Onto the 2nd one!!!
It was an okay read. I guess I was a little disappointed after hearing how many people love this series. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I didn't start it with such high expectations. It was a quick read, and I'll probably try the second book in the series.

Stephanie Pulm is not your average bounty hunter, she is very clumsy, she acts before she thinks and she does not have a "normal" family life. That is what makes her so funny. It took me a while to get into the story, but once I did I could not put the book down. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next in the second book in this series.
Nice change of pace from your larger than life detective and mystery novel - a little more grounded / real.

Out of work for months, with her savings gone and her car repossessed, Stephanie Plum is desperate enough to ask her cousin, Vinnie for a job. But the filing job had already been filled, so she decides to try her hand at bounty hunting. How hard can it be?
It turns out to be very difficult. Most of the criminals won't come when asked politely. And she did target Joe Morelli, a cop on the run trying to prove he was framed. Still, that huge paycheck and a shared past keep her focused on Morelli. But when boxer Benito Ramirez starts dogging her trail, she begins to suspect she's in over her head. Can she survive long enough to bring Morelli in?
I've heard a lot about these Stephanie Plum books but have never read one. I'm glad I did. The writing style is engaging and the pace fast. I had a hard time putting the book down and when I did I couldn't stop thinking about. When I finished it, I ordered the second in the series to see what would happen next to the main characters.
I now see why this series is so popular. The characters and storyline make for quick, light reading. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Fun little mystery. Nothing life-changing, but a pleasant way to while away a few hours. The main character is a riot and the whole tale strikes just about the right balance between ass-kicking and funny. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Be forewarned that starting to read this book could start a serious addiction. I found myself at the library checking out every book in the series just so that once I finished one book, I could start on the next.
The situations that Stephanie Plum finds herself in are too comical. My favorite character has to be Ranger. Janet Evanovich must knows someone like this in real life to be able to portray this character so well.

This is a fun romp -- an interesting new character in the cozy mystery genre. Stephanie Plum is likeable, human, imperfect and a pleasure to "follow." Just enough peril to keep it interesting, without being a horror show. Pleasant fun, with a satisfying "tease" of more to come.

Very funny, quick read. Can't wait to read more in the series.
The Stephie Plum novels are the funniest books I have read in a long time. Just gotta love Grandma Mazur - Stephanie lands a gig at her sleazy cousin Vinnie's bail bonding company. She's got no experience. But that doesn't matter. Neither does the fact that the bail jumper in question is local vice cop Joe Morelli. From the time he first looked up her dress to the time he first got into her pants, to the time Steph hit him with her father's buick, Morelli has spelled TROUBLE. And now that hot guy is in hot water....wanted for murder.
I love this book. The Stephanie Plum series is great. I would recommend this book to anyone. It has some great laughs and provides a wonderful mystery.

My first book my Janet Evanovich and I am hooked! This book was such a quick, fun read!
I couldn't put it down. This was a great read!!!
I love this series! Stephanie Plum, bail bondswoman extraordinaire, always seems to find herself in situations with her men, her grandmother, her friends, etc. that lead to danger and hilarity. I can never put one of these down until I've finished reading it. This is the first of the series, and I guarantee you will be hooked after you read it.
I never considered myself a mystery reader. That was until I read this book! You will laugh out loud at this book as well as double check the lock on the front door before you go to bed! It's a great book and easy read that will have you saying, "Oh, just one more chapter!" I am looking forward to following the series.
Stephanie plum is a laid-off lingerie buyer. She is divorced. She is 30 years old. She lives in Trenton, New Jersey. Her car was repossessed and to make rent she has been selling her furniture if she doesn't find work soon she will have to move back with her parents. She convinces her cousin Vinny to hire her as a bounty hunter in his bail bond business. She is given one week to bring in bail jumper Cop Joe Morelli. He disappeared after shooting an unarmed man. The bounty is high 10k and it helps to want vengence on the man who took her virginity behind the eclair counter at the bakery. He never called and wrote a poem about on the bathroom room.
Stephanie knows nothing about bounty hunting but stumbles upon Joe, but doesnt know what to do with him when she finds him. So Stephanie enlists the help of one hot mysterious bounty hunter called Ranger. Ranger is amused by Stephanie and agrees to be her mentor. When Ranger asks what she did when she found Morelli she said I asked him to go with me to the police station but he refused! Ranger works in the gray side of the law but helps Stephanie purchase a gun and mace so she will be prepared next time.
So during the story she borrows Joes car since he is on the run and it is bombed and she is stocked by a pysco prize fighter. There are a lot of unexpected and funny turns through the book. You will chuckle if not laugh through the book. The books are keepers.
A friend borrowed the first book and promptly came back and borrowed the other 13. She is willl buy the 15th herself. The characters are solid with a lot of chemistry. I havent read another book where all the characters jump off the page and are all likeable. You will be entertained through the book. No thinking or pondering allowed. I would recommend this whole series.
Beware: even if you do not like donuts be prepared to crave them. I actually had to purchase tastey cakes but they sounded so good.they werent. Stephanie is able to eat anything she wants and not gain an ounce so she eats a lot in the books.

My Rating: B-
This first novel in the Stephanie Plumb sereis is a quick and easy read. The author is witty (though I didn't find the book to be as laugh out loud funny as I was told to expect). The way the characters interact with each other is easy and doesn't seem forced. The dialogue seems quite natural.
Often throughout the book I found that the dangerous situations that Stephanie got into were magically fixed. They almost always felt set up. Also towards the end of the book I felt that the author simply skimmed over important parts. As if the ending were rushed.
I do recommend this book to those who like something light and easy, just a little something to get your mind away from the everyday.

Yawn! One would best be from 'Jursy' (Jersey) to appreciate this book. Hey, I'm not a feinting type, but I got tired of the crudeness where it really wasn't necessary. Too easy to figure out plot and inept chicky-poo exploits not all that believable. The movie Midnight Run did this better. Hard to believe this was made into a movie with Katherine Heigl no less - BIG mistake.
Welcome to Trenton, New Jersey, home to average Joes, small-time hoodlums, and Stephanie Plum. Stephanie is a Jersey girl through and through, who sports a big attitude and even bigger money problems. She used to be a lingerie buyer for a department store, but ever since she lost her job, money is tight. Stephanie needs cash - and she needs it fast, so that means she must do the previously unthinkable: swallow her pride, and turn to her family.
As the last resort of the truly desperate, Stephanie lands a job with her sleazy cousin Vinnie's bail bonding company. She has zero experience, but that doesn't mean anything. Vinnie gives her a week to catch his latest bail jumper: one Joseph Morrelli. The name doesn't mean anything to Stephanie, really...it doesn't. Neither does it matter that the bail jumper in question is actually local vice cop Joe Morelli.
Nope...It doesn't matter one bit to Stephanie that from the time they were children, Joe Morelli has caused her nothing but headaches. From the time he first looked up her dress to the time they first slept together to the time that Stephanie hit him with her father's Buick, The name Morelli has meant nothing but trouble. And now this hot guy is in some seriously hot water - wanted for murder.
Abject poverty may be a remarkable motivator for learning some new skills, but being stalked by a seriously deranged prizefighter can provide a much needed incentive as well. Being taught a class in the school of hard knocks by people like Benito 'The Champ' Ramirez doesn't rank very highly on Stephanie Plum's latest to-do list. Still if Stephanie can nab Joe Morelli in a week, she'll make a cool ten grand. All she has to do is become an expert bounty hunter overnight - and keep herself from getting killed before she gets her man.
I have heard so many good things about this series, but have never actually read any of the books in it. Janet Evanovich is a new author for me, but why did I wait so long to read anything by her? I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; it was an intriguing mystery and I really appreciated the thread of dry humor that ran through the story. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future and give this book a definite A!

Good book. Lots of characters.
Trenton native Stephanie Plum is out of work, out of money, and her car's in repo-hell. So who does a hardly working girl turn to when the going gets tough? Meet cousin Vinnie, bail bondsman. Stephanie figures it's nice work if you can get it--shagging bail jumpers for $10,000 a pop. So she joins up.
Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. There's also a cranky ex-prizefighter dogging her and a nasty habit she has of leaping first and looking later. If Stephanie doesn't wise up fast, the first dead body in her future could be her own.

Fun read. Light with humor, and a look at life in the "Burg".
Just started reading the Stephanie Plum series. Love this book. Will get more.
Great read! It really made me laugh. Can't wait to start the second in the series.
great book!
Okay read.
Fun summer read!
I really enjoyed reading One for the Money by Janet Evanovich!
Imagine jumping into a job where you stick out like a sore thumb, you fit in nowhere, and it's pretty much learn as you go. Well Stephanie Plum as just done all this and more after being canned as a discount lingerie buyer.
Hard up for cash and about to be evicted, Stephanie takes a job as a bounty hunter, and gets landed with Joe Morelli, the gorgeous, seductive, possibly murderous cop who once boinked her beside some eclairs!
I love the love/hate relationship between Plum and Morelli!
The book is written from Stephanie's point of view and it's one you can believe and maybe even see yourself in.
On her mission to find and capture Morelli and in turn collect her $10,000, Stephanie runs into some questionable and downright evil characters! I personally LOVE her Grandma Mazur! I imagine Betty White mixed with the grandmother from the Wedding Crashers!
All in the name of making a buck...what's a girl gonna do?
All in all, One for the Money is a great book and a great start to what I hope will be a great series!
For witty banter, delicious characters, and situations you can only laugh out loud about, this book is it!
If I HAD to find anything to complain about...I wasn't fussed how it ended so quickly. This is probably because it's part of the series and Janet Evanovich is leaving me wanting more. So, if this is why, it totally worked because I now can't wait to read the second book in the series, Two for the Dough!
