What can I say...J.R. Ward did it again!!!! This is my favorite series of all time. I tried so hard to savor this book and make it last, but that didn't happen. I read it in two days, and it was amazing. We find out so much more about "V" and his past, which really brings the present into prospective. As always we learn more about the other Brothers, their mates, and some surprises are thrown in that really blows the mind. I am now anxiously awaiting the next in the series, to see what happens that is left unfinished here. If you know this series you know what to expect as far as Vishous and his sexual preferences, so if you are squeamish about that, then you may want to skip those parts. A GREAT book by A SUPER TALENTED author.

This is not the easiest book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series to read. It has some BDSM elements to it (V's sexuality) that might make some people uncomfortable to read, along with the fact that two of the main characters finally have a conversation over a sexual attraction that was only an assumption before. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and read this book straight through in a matter of hours. I wasn't turned off by the unconventional HEA but, was rather intrigued on how Ms. Ward would use and change it in upcoming books, and also how it might change the fate of some of the other characters. The secondary character development was exceptional and now I am on pins and needles awaiting the next book in the series.

This is the story of Vishous who I think is the most gifted member of the brotherhood. Vishous is badly injured and ends up in a human hospital being operated on by Dr. Jane Whitcomb. When the brothers discover where he is at, they act quickly to get him out of the hospital and take Jane with them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it in one day. Many people did not like the unexpected ending of this book, but it didn't bother me. You get a lot of secondary stories with Phury and John Matthew. A big plus is there is no point-of-view scenes from the Lessening Society. My rating: 5 Stars.

Read this in two days. I never want the Black Dagger Brotherhood series to end. J. R. Ward has done a fabulous job developing and entwining the "Brothers" stories so that the books flow easily to the next one. Just can't say enough good things about this author and series. Loved it!!

Lover Unbound is the story of Vishous. I was at a point that I didn't think anything would surprise me with this series, but I was wrong. Way wrong. At one point, I just had to walk away because something in the story just shocked me so much. That's not to say it was bad. In fact it was very good.

There are a lot of ups and downs in this book, but all are very much worth it. The ending to this book is so sweet, it almost breaks your heart. Lover Unbound is another great installment in The Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

I love all of JR Ward books but this is the best up to now. If you have not read any of the other "4 Books" Black Dagger Brotherhood books I think you need to start with the first in the series. The First book set up why the brotherhood is together in the begenning then you can jump around on the others if you can not get them in the right order.

The way that JR writes is so real, you become caught up in the emotion's and lives of the characters. In the previous novels, V has had some interesting devolpments and personally he is my favorite of the characters. I had some expectations and really looked forward to this book. The relationship between Jane and V was great and well written in the beginning. Later it felt that Jane was too rushed and the ending was rushed and tacked on. The ending left alot of questions; one I hope are answered in the upcoming novels. Still a must read; just make sure you read them in order!

I really enjoyed this book as I have all of the Brotherhood books so far. I found some parts of the story line frustrating, but it's because the brothers stomp off instead of saying what they want to sometimes. But that is the way these guys are. But the stories wouldn't work the same if they behaved any different. This book definitely ended making your drool for the next one.

I loved this book and would have given it 5 stars right up until the end where it got a little bit weird for me. I won't say why and ruin it for anyone else but for me the ending just didn't work still was well worth the read with many Yummy parts.

This author really knows how to take you on an emotional journey with her characters! Loved the relationships between the characters, but found the ending a little strange. Still it's a great read and I encourge reading the complete series.

As with all of the in the series thus far, I love the brotherhood. Each book just builds on the relationships between them all and it keeps me wanting to read more. This one's focus is on Vishous and Jane. Vishous, or V, has been a favorite of mine from the beginning and learning more about him and his past in this book made me like him even more. There are some things in the book, in relation to V that may make some readers uncomfortable, but it is what it is and I'm glad that J.R. Ward was ballsy enough to go through with his story line. In some ways I'd say that V's back story is as heartbreaking in it's brutality as Zsadist's.
I loved Jane, talk about a true no nonsense woman. Although she has been kidnapped and is scared for her life, she is still able to hold her own with V and the whole brotherhood. She's strong, intellegent and is perfect for V.
The book's secondary focus is on Phury and paves the way for book 5, Lover Enshrined.
It also continues to show the growth of John Mathews from pretrans to post change, and how his relationships continue to grow with Blaylock & Qhuinn and Zsadist, the flashbacks that he has, and his issues with Lash.

Really, really, REALLY good book. THis the first I've read of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and I'm looking forward to the rest! I liked that the story showed depth and history in serveral of the main characters, instead of just the main players. It encourages the reader to want to learn more of them by reading the books where their the central characters. Excellent read! VERY sexy, while touching and heart wrenching as well.

Th ending of this book totally sucked. It was a cop-out by the author (I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but it seems as though Ward could have fixed it in a much more satisfying way.)
And I really felt like the book was highjacked from the main characters. This is, by far, my least favorite in the whole series.
Having said that, you have to read it if you want to understand the next books in the series. LOL I can see why authors write them that way.

I'm really liking the series the more I read them. I started with Book 4 not knowing that I was in the middle so there were certain things that the authors assumes you know about by now so I got kind of lost. J.R. Ward really takes it there in regards to topics of sexuality, and cruelty like I have never read. She kept me interested. I still cringe sometimes at the dialect. There is too much unrealistic slang, and from very different social crowds. Really unnecessary at some points and maybe not age appropriate for centuries old vampires. It's almost like she is trying to fit every "cool" word in to a conversation or should I say "convo". HA! These books are really fun. Enjoy!

Wow this is the most addicting series I have read. Hot and steamy, these books are sure to keep you turning the pages at lightning speeds. JR Ward is a wonderful writer whose characters you can't get enough of. Every one of the books in this series are a work of artistry. Impossible to put down!!!

The story was okay. My biggest dislike of this book was what the author did with Jane. That just seemed unnecessary. I liked V and Jane, but I was disappointed with the ending. The ending just made no sense. I read this book first, which was a big mistake because it nearly turned me off to the rest of the series. I gave the series a second chance many many months after reading this one, by reading Dark Lover which was much better. So I may decide to continue the sries.

There is so much in the content of this book that steps far beyond what we have come to expect from the series. This is a good thing,because it keeps the series from stagnating.

The plot flows well, and it's relevant to the series. We continue to learn more about the world of the vampires, and their spiritual world as well.

I think that out of all of the Black Dagger Brotherhood I liked Vishious and Zadist the best. I fell in love with Vishous and Z. This was such a good book. Vishious is such a tormented soul that I felt for him and I could not stop reading his story.

Vishous is one of my favorite vampires from the Black Dagger Brotherhood. He is such a cunning, incredibly cerebral vampire so naturally I was so looking forward to his story. I didn't enjoy Lover Unbound that much. V should have been the main focus of the book. There were just too many subplots and too much of Phury's upcoming story in the next book. Heck, this book could have been called Lover Enshrined: Phury's Story Part I. He has that big of a role in this book. Not that I mind subplots involving John Matthew, Phury, Qhuinn, Blay, and Zsadist because I like to know what the others are doing, but the side stories really took away from Jane and V. They barely have any time together and their romance is so rushed that it's unrealistic. You don't get a real sense of their relationship the way you did with Z and Bella. That disappointed me. V is such a great character. He deserved to be the only focus of the book. I read somewhere that V is Ward's least favorite characters, and it shows.

It makes sense of course when you think about it, but wow it's such a shocking revelation. Then the book just goes off on tangents and doesn't focus enough on the two main characters (Jane and V). Jane isn't very likable. V is not like the V we know. The only good parts are the funny interactions between V and Butch and the bathroom scene with V and Jane. The bathroom scene *fans self* you have to read the book just for that scene. It's probably one of Ward's best love scenes although it's more on the dom/sub side.
By the way, this is not the book you should read to get started on the series. You should read the four other books that precede this one or you'll really be lost. So if you've read the previous Black Dagger Brotherhood books, you know that Z has some unconventional tastes when it comes to sex. Yes, there is some very mild bondage and some mild S/M, but it's very brief and completely consensual. I think people imagine it to be worse than it is in the book. I think Ward held back actually. I've read more intense BDSM scenes in other books. What she describes is pretty tame.
I was disappointed in the ending. Ward didn't have to end it like that. (spoiler) In the book, V gives Jane some of his blood and says it will extend her life. So why couldn't that have been the way to prolong her human life instead of making her what she ends up being? Also, if it's possible for Jane to become what she became, why not Darius or Wellsie?

Wow, what a let down. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series and have been reading them back to back and fast I'm so hooked. What happened here? I enjoyed V's back story and even the love story, although it was sparse in comparison to other books (Zadist and Bella are still my favorite!)and focused a lot on Phury...although I saw that twist coming a mile away! But really the ending just ruined it for me...
Let' hope the next one is better and that somehow V gets another story b/c of all the brother's he deserves an awesome one!

I enjoyed this book because it was almost all had to do with the brotherhood. It is a very easy read and introduces several new plot lines and characters. I am a huge fan of the character V and was wondering what was going to happen with him. His horrible past is explained, which is not easy to read. To be honest I skimmed over the flash backs. And Phury's personal life is brought into play as well. The only character that I begin to loath is the Scribe Virgin. I cannot say much more without spoilers.

V's Book. My absolute Favorite Character EVER!!!!! Oh, to find a guy just like him. Great, Great, Story!!! I love the conflict within him and how he overcomes it all. His relationship with Butch makes me laugh out loud every time I read it.

The best yet! Ahh V, what a complex mess he is! Convinced he will remain fixated on his best friend Butch, he continues his miserable existence until a fiesty, smart surgeon comands him to "Stay with me!" The Brotherhood is the best series out there, full of action and emotional turmoil and unexpected joy. I love a book that makes me smile, and these brothers do make me smile as they stumble around in their new-found emotions. John is growing up (literally) and Phury is still blindly doing what he thinks is the right thing. Read this book!

'Dear Virgin in The Fade' each book is better than the last! This series is the hottest stuff I've gotten into lately and I'm a huge fan of Kenyon, Moning, Shayne and Adrian so we're talking some good company. I'm going to really hate reading the final page of the final book and I'm getting there way too fast. "Lover Unbound" is Vischous' story and it's awesome. There's a lot of Butch, of course, and I just love him. We also get a lot more information getting us ready for Phury's book, which is next, and still more setting up for John Matthew's/Darius' book later. The ride just gets better and better!
LOVED IT!!!!!! The end was lacking but overall this book was great. It took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I think this is Ward's last great book of the series. From here on out Ward really changes up her writing style. Phury's story sucked and Rhevs was okay.

I LOVE THIS WHOLE SERIES AND I HOPE SHE CONTINUES WITH THE BROTHERS. THESE ARE THE BEST VAMPIRE BOOKS.
Have to hand it to the Warden on this one. V bringing me to tears, never thought it would happen and then it did and kept on doing it. The bombshells that get dropped in this book still leave me slightly spinning, and questioning how I missed all of the signs for so long in some cases. V and Butch have been a great source of interest to me in the past books and watching their relationship develop even farther has been wonderful. The book did leave me wondering when will they be dating. After all the personal and intimate moments they have been through together what will it take, cause so far they still aren't dating. I love how that statement always comes up between the two of them.
I am definitely a J.R. Ward fan, but having said that, of all the Brotherhood series I have read this one is the biggest disappointment. Considering "V"'s place in the brotherhood and his special abilities, I expected a much more substantial relationship for him with his mate. Quite a let down. As is her way there are other sub plots developing within this book and I'm certainly hoping the rest of the series isn't as lacking in "meatiness","charissma","hutz-pah" or whatever you would like to call it as this particular one is. Each of the series is good as a stand alone read, however I can safely say if I had read this one first I most likely would not have gone on to read any others in the series.
Not my favorite in the series. I love Vishous and the story between him and Butch is really deep and touching. I also like Jane and loved how strong she is with him and how they moved through his issues together. But the fact that he so easily let go his love for Butch and of course the suck ending to the book combined to make the book a bit of a downer and not the joy to read that many of the others in the series have been. There is less "lesser" action in this book, thankfully, so most of the scene interruptions are the furthering of the story of John Matthew (finally transitioned), and Phury. If you plan to read book 6, this book is a MUST for the important back story.

The best yet! Ahh V, what a complex mess he is! Convinced he will remain fixated on his best friend Butch, he continues his miserable existence until a fiesty, smart surgeon comands him to "Stay with me!" The Brotherhood is the best series out there, full of action and emotional turmoil and unexpected joy. I love a book that makes me smile, and these brothers do make me smile as they stumble around in their new-found emotions. John is growing up (literally) and Phury is still blindly doing what he thinks is the right thing. Read this book!

This was by far my second favorite of this series! I absolutely loved the story of Vishous and also of Jane. I was also happy to read more about John aka Darius. I am very excited to read Phury and Cormia's love story next!

I had no problem with the S&M stuff. I was just so bored with the book that I couldn't finish it. The beginning is really slow and it's filled with chapter after chapter of whining. For big, bad vampires, they sure do the "poor me" thing a lot. I thought Vishous naughty thoughts about Butch was actually quite hot, but then I had to read about Phury pining for Bella, and Blay pinning for Qhuinn (which actually wasn't bad), then the Chosen whining about wanting something more than her life, then Vishous whining about his mother, etc... You get the drift. And I really like Vishous in the other books and was really looking forward to reading his story.
I enjoyed all the other Black Dagger Brotherhood books with exception of this one and Zhadist stories. Ironically, both Vishous and Zhadist were some of my favorite characters in the other books. The fifth book is about Vishous (aka V) and opens with a prologue in the human world where we meet Jane Whitcomb who plays a Ouija game with Hannah, her younger sister, the night before Hannah dies suddenly.
V is very frustrated with his life. Butch, Vs roommate, has married Marissa and she has moved to live in the Pit with Butch. This has confirmed that V is never going to be with Butch (see, I knew there was this strange homophobia-like thing going on.) Plus, V has lost his visions and ability to read peoples minds.
Then, he gets a visit from the Scribe Virgin, who informs him that she is his mother and that he is to become the Primale. As Primale, he will mate with the Chosen and become the father of the future Chosen. This is something he does not want to do and the fact that the Scribe Virgin left him to be raised by his evil father, doesnt endear him to her.
That evening, he is shot while fighting with Lessers and is taken to a human hospital to recover. There he meets Jane Whitcomb, the trauma surgeon, who saves his life. When the Brothers finally find him at the hospital, he forces them to take Jane with them and back to the Brothers compound.
This infuriates Wrath, but V insists he will erase her memory and return her to the human world. V says he will do this, but he really doesnt want to. In fact, since hes met Jane, his attraction to Butch has change to friendship only. Hes going to try to find a way to keep Jane in his life. Plus, get her to forget about the doctor at the hospital, Manny Manello.
Phury continues to pine for Bella while he feeds his addiction. Hes also started to take unnecessary risks when battling Lessers and is badly injured. He refuses to be taken to be seen by Havers because he knows Bella is there due to complications from her pregnancy. Luckily, V has a doctor at the compound who can care for him. Phury also makes an offer to take on the role of Primale for Vishous.
Among the Chose, Cormia, is the one who will be with the Primale first, but she is not looking forward to this role. The Directrix is adamant that she will follow the rules. Cormia is terrified on Vishous, especially since he is the son of the Bloodletter.
Also, during this book, John, Blaylock and Qhuinn go through the transition to full-fledge vampire. Of course, John transitions pretty much last in the class. Theyve also started to hang out at ZeroSum where John becomes obsessed with the female security guard, Xhex. (Sex get it? This is where the name thing really gets annoying. What young guy isnt obsessed with sex?)
I didnt like this book as much as the last three. Mostly because I really dont like how the author resolved the relationship between V and Jane. Otherwise, the concept of sacrificing for love is still a strong theme in the stories. I do think we are going to be seeing more of Dr Manny Manello even though the Brothers erased his memory of them.
The good thing, theres still lots of sex.

This is not the place to start in the BDB series. That said, it should be read and is somewhat enjoyable. I'm not into BDSM but I didn't mind it in the book, it was a different experience for me. I honestly felt more connection between Butch & V than Jane & V. I felt like this wasn't so much V's story as it was a lead in for Phury who I'm still eagerly anticipating. I was very disappointed by the ending...LAME. Get it at the library or here but save your $$

Another in the series of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. If you haven't read any of the others, stop and go back, they are best read in order, as the story builds.
This book is centered on Vishous, but as usual you get to know the other Brothers as well. Ward continues to reveal bits and pieces of John's story, I expect a full book on him later.
I don't think I liked this as much as some of the others. Not for the BDSM (or whatever other alphabet soup you want to call it), but I think the Scribe Virgin creeps me out. And, there isn't as much fighting in this one -- yes, I'm male.

This book definitely has a conclusion, but there are also a lot of new threads started, to be picked up in subsequent books.

This was the fifth book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by Ward. The most recent book, Lover Unleashed, Book 9 came out in March of 2011. This was a decent book in the series and if you have enjoyed previous books I think you will also enjoy this one. I listened to this on audio book; the audio book was well done.
This book focuses on Vishous. In the beginning of the story Vishous is gravely wounded and the human surgeon Jane saves his life. Vishous is drawn to Jane and can't imagine living without her; of course there are problems with this. First of all Jane is human and more importantly Vishous has been designated by the Scribe Virgin to be the Primale. The Primale is supposed to only mate with Chosen to ensure the continuation of the species. The story also spends some time with John Mathews as he undergoes his transistion. Ample storyline is also given to Phury as he struggles with his attraction to his brother's mate Bella.
This is definitely not a book to start the series on. A lot of these stories are continuations from previous books. Ward continues to develop Zsadist's storyline some as well as storylines of the other males. There are a couple new characters thrown into the mix to keep things interesting. This book is definitely a paranormal romance and not urban fantasy.
I enjoyed reading about Vishous and Jane as a couple; there are some more interesting sex scenes in this book and things get a little crazy at times. Jane was the first really smart heroine we've had in this series and it was nice to see the super intelligent Vishous find someone that matched him so well. We also get more insight into the world of the Chosen and the Scribe Virgin.
Phury also features a lot in this book and it was good to see his storyline start to develop; it continues in the next book in the series, Lover Enshrined. It was also great to see John Mathews finally go through his transition. It is clever how Ward also starts developing the storylines for her next couple in the previous books; it builds suspense nicely.
I do also have some complaints about this book though. Vishous falls in love with Jane awfully fast; this series has never been very realistic about characters falling in love...but this book was particularly unbelievable. Also the Lessers are conspicuously absent the majority of the book; they play a small role in the beginning and end of the story but that is it. The result is pretty much a solid romance story devoid of action; it was a lot like reading a soap opera at times. Given that it was still very engaging and fun to read; I never come into these books expecting a whole lot more than a fun and engaging romance with some interesting characters...so if that is your expectation you shouldn't be too disappointed.
Overall not my favorite book of the series, but I still found it engaging and enjoyed listening to it. I am eager to hear Phury and Cormia's story in the next book, Lover Enshrined. These books are just pure escapism, which is fine with me. I do have to read them spread out over time because I think reading mulitple installments would get to be too much, too corny, and just boring. The stories are always similar, but if you want a fun paranormal romance with intriguing characters this series fits the bill nicely.

Woo-hoo! Shitkickers (that I remember) only used once! I enjoyed the glimpses into what is happening with the other characters. I appreciated the incite into V's childhood and his *awesome* father (and mother).
An annoyance: Phury needs to get over Bella STAT. And when you *know* he has a serious crush Bella consistently seeks him out, leave him alone!
Later when he meets Cormia, her level of ignorance is astounding.

It was a good read...BUT...I didn't care too much for the ending. I don't want to ruin it for anyone by giving the specifics, but I would have preferred a different ending. I'm still going to read books 6 and 7 and hopefully the changes will grow on me as the author follows up on Vishous and Jane's story.

Well another two thumbs up for J.R. Ward, I expected nothing less. J.R. Ward matched my expectations in this book and then some. Ward's ability to weave together a story with bread crumbs that lead to the next and future books is one of the things I love about this series. I usually have a hard time with series because of all the cliff hangers, but Ward does a good job of making each book a stand alone while at the same time setting up future books with characters you can't wait to see again and see how their storyline ends.
This book was about Vishous and Dr. Jane Whitcomb. Vishous is a Vampire Warrior with a past as dark and twisted as the rest of his brothers in the "Brotherhood". His childhood and youth makes you want to cringe. What he had to do to survive brings tears to your eyes and leaves you with nightmares. He's been cursed (or blessed, depending on how you see things) with a white light power in his hand. His hand leaves him unable to touch another living thing, unless he wants to kill them. His hand can kill with a touch or heal Butch (ironically). He's also cursed with the ability to see how someone will die and some other future events. His visions are so vague that he cannot change the future, even though he wants to.

He's vacant and seeks to fill that hole with meaningless sex and knowledge from around the world from the past and present. He's immortal and she's human and no matter what they want they cannot be together forever. Well another two thumbs up for J.R. Ward, I expected nothing less. J.R. Ward matched my expectations in this book and then some. Ward's ability to weave together a story with bread crumbs that lead to the next and future books is one of the things I love about this series. I usually have a hard time with series because of all the cliff hangers, but Ward does a good job of making each book a stand alone while at the same time setting up future books with characters you can't wait to see again and see how their storyline ends.

J.R. Ward has put a nice twist on the vampire. If your into the good guy dark vampires then you will like this series.

J.R. Ward gets it right. I couldn't put the book down. And just when you think "ahhh....this one isn't going to end well" she puts in a twist. I think I like Lover Unbound of the Black Dagger Series best so far

I love V... I think he and Butch are fine, my problem with this book, was there were too many stories going... I wanted there to be more of V and Jane... It still sailed by for me, and I will read it again, but NOT my favorite, I am still a V fan all the way!!!!

NOT my favorite in the series. I remember this from the first read. Too many stories all jumbled together almost got confusing... and how boring were the Lessers? Everytime I got into V & Jane's story the author would change to another story. And I wanted more of Phury. And what happens with Manello? I can't remember!

The story was great but the ending was horrible. I was not happy the way the author left the couple. After everything that happened how could she kill the only person that he loved and then bring her back as a ghost for the rest of their lives. They can't be together in the real sense, his friends can walk through her, no children. I so was not happy with the book. I really liked all her books up until this one, has turned me off the series right now. I have Phury's book but I don't know if I want to read it. I hope that she realizes that people would want a better ending.

Unusual twist between Jane & V - maybe a little too far out since the other characters have very solid forms & presence. But still had lost of action, albeit quick.
