Not as strong as the previous books in the series. While I appreciate Churchill's bringing in new characters, she is losing control of the essential element of Point of View, and doing a lot more telling than showing.

I hope this isn't a signal as to where the series is headed.

Grace and Favor has been booked for a meeting of a mysterious group, but when the leader of the group gets murdered, everyone learns that he was a controversial traveling preacher. The investigation turns up many suspects. Robert and Lily also get part-time jobs as substitute teachers when the regular teacher takes leave for surgery. And a new boarder takes up residence in Grace and Favor house.

I enjoyed this book, and believe that Churchill has maintained the high quality of this series.

A light Depression-era mystery featuring a brother and sister, who have lost everything but a mansion that they must live in for a certain period according to the terms of the will.

A Grace and Favor mystery. While Ms. Churchill has been compared to Agatha Christie, and while she does have talent, and while I have enjoyed the other books in the G&F series thus far, I didn't like this one as well. However, it was a spellbinding read.

I like anything Jill Churchill writes and I wish she were still publishing her books. This is a gentile mystery series set during the Great American Depression and chronicles the trials of a brother and sister who are barely able to eke out a living. Inheriting a distant relative's estate is a blessing even if they must leave New York and live in the house in a small town to reap the monetary benefits. Nice cozy mystery series with likable characters.

I have been reading this series completely out of order but in this series, it isn't crucial to do so. In other words, you don't feel like you have missed out on some key character or whatever if you read one later in the series then one of the first 3 or 4. In this story, Lily and Robert are substitute teaching at the local school. Plus, they rent out the 3rd floor to a mysterious group at a price they could hardly turn down. Unfortunately, the "boss" of the group is found dead in the bathroom and it seems that the only thing he meant to his team was money not fondness for him. He had one fan and he too became disenchanted when he found out that the preacher didn't walk his talk. Chief of Police Howard Walker has his work cut out for him finding the killer. There are some seemingly unconnected characters to the story but Ms. Churchill wraps it up quite nicely and I was pleased with the book. A light who-done-it that you will enjoy.

This was a quick easy read. I love the time period and the characters and I will read more of this series because of that. However, the writing feels a bit stilted and there was one issue that was never explained. The bad guy denied doing it and everyone just shrugged it off as "Well they're lying." There was never a motive given for this particular act or any kind of explanation.

Love is series of "light-hearted" mysteries.

I love this series. This one is another good entry in the series. I'm enjoying it so much that I'm keeping these books to read again sometime when I need a fun comfort read. The characters are all very likable ... except for the villains, of course.
