I have really enjoyed his books so far...he has an engaging writing style and his characters are very believable. This story has lots of twists that kept me guessing til nearly the end of the book! One of the main characters made a mistake in his college years that landed him in jail and it changed his life completely. He has spent his life trying to separate himself from that and the story revolves around what happens when his and his wife's pasts both come back to haunt them. GREAT READ!

A great story. Events continue to change as you get deeper into the book. By the last third of the book you don't want to put it down. Another great Coben thriller!

Matt Hunter breaks up a fight, accidentally killing a man. When he comes out of prison, changed, and is buying a new home in his old neighborhood for his pregnant wife, things began to happen. While entertaining writing, I found the ending of the story, where everything usually pulls together nicely...a bit too much unreal and complicated. Judge for yourself!

I like Harlan Cobens books. Tell No One and Gone for Good were two of the best thrillers I have ever read. So I was really looking forward to this one, and Coben doesnt disappoint. His trademark twists, turns and betrayals abound. The story loses half a point for too many coincidences in the conclusion, but basically a roller coaster ride is what is served up here.
The bare bones of the story, because there are so many plot twists I am afraid to give anything away:
A nun is assumed to have died of natural causes, but when the coroner discovers she had implants suspicions are arisen, and it becomes clear she was murdered. Matt Hunter is a man who has served time in prison, for involuntary manslaughter, when he was a senior in college. He somehow becomes implicated in Sister Mary Roses death. In addition it appears that his is having an affair; and her lover is sending Matt incriminating videos and pictures of their assignation. Throw in an adopted girl searching for her birth mother, some strippers in Vegas and the FBI and you have the ingredients for a rollicking tale.
A very fast read, I finished in a couple of days. My biggest complaint is that there were so many twists, a few times I got lost and had to go back and reread, but still a very enjoyable suspense tale.

Totally Coben. This is a very intense drama -- I couldn't wait to get to the next page; I hated to see the book end. Wonderful story -- wonderful characters. Harlan Coben just keeps getting better and better -- he latches on to you in the first few pages, and never lets go. Highly recommended!

Another great mystery and story by Coben. Scott Brick reads this one and I never had any issues with being able to tell which character was speaking. All of Coben's characters are flawed in some way, but he proves once again that doesn't mean they (or any of us) are beyond redemption just because of something in the past. Suspenseful, fast paced, and exciting - I never wanted to turn it off! Highly recommend.

Some mistakes can change you life forever. The horror of one night is forever etched in Matt Hunter's memory: the night he innocently tried to break up a fight--and ended up a killer. Now, nine years after his release from prison, his innocence long forgotten, he's an ex-con who takes nothing for granted. With his wife, Olivia, pregnant and the two of them closing on a house in his hometown, things are looking up. Until the day Matt gets a shocking, inexplicable video call from Olivia's phone. In an instant, the unraveling begins.
A mysterious man who had begun tailing Matt turns up dead. A beloved nun is murdered. And local and federal authorities--including homicide investigator Loren Muse, a childhood schoolmate of Matt's with a troubled past of her own--see all signs pointing to a former criminal with one murder already under his belt...Matt Hunter. Unwilling to lose everything for a second time, Matt and Olivia are forced outside the law in a desperate attempt to save their future together.
An electrifying thrill ride of a novel that peeks behind the white picket fences of suburbia, The Innocent is at once a twisting, turning, emotionally charged story and a compelling tale of the choices we make and the repercussions that never leave us.

Some mistakes can change your life forever. Matt Hunter is learning this lesson as he innocently tried to break up a fight and ended up a killer. Nine years after his release from prison, he is now an ex-con who takes nothing for granted. His pregnant wife, Olivia, goes to Boston on a business trip and Matt receives a shocking video call from her and his life begins to unravel. Soon Matt is a wanted man after a mysterious man ends up dead and a nun is murdered. Matt and Olivia are forced to run in a desperate attempt to save their future together. The plot was twisting and emotionally charged. The characters were believable and well-developed. Coben is an excellent writer and tied everything up in the end. I have read all of his Myron Bolitar books and enjoyed them very much. I look forward to reading another standalone next and would recommend this book to those who like mystery/thrillers.

"Stocked with fascinatingly creepy characters, Coben's keeps-you-guessing mystery is terrifying. The tension does not build slowly, it snaps and crackles right from the get go... The only plausible reason for setting down this book is to make sure that your front door is locked and double-bolted." Torn cover is the way the book was sold to show the title. It is done by design.

Harlan Coben writes a compelling story; for about the first half of the book I was wondering what in the heck was going on, then he began to slowly drop clues. The book is written in 3rd person with some annoying switches into second person. I enjoyed it. For Harlan Coben fans, this is NOT an Myron Bolitar detective book, but a free-standing thriller.

GREAT Harlan Coben thriller!
Very good read - lots of twists and turns and intertwinings
The trouble with Coben's book is that they are hard to skim, too many twists and turns, someone always returns from the dead or turns out to be at the crucial scene 20 years ago.
I "found" Mr. Coben quite by accident a few years back, and after reading the first book I've made it a priority to read anything else he has written. I truly love his "voice"....
Excellent, heart-rending thriller as only Coben seems to do consistently!!
Good read
I couldn't put this down! Everytime I thought I had it figured out, I didn't!
great book, always left you wanting more. Also kept you wandering what was going to happen next. Very well written. Loved it so much i read it twice...
Don't plan anything! Fast paced..gets you from the start and won't let you go.
this was another very good thriller by Harlan Coben. It is not a fast read, at least the first half as it has alot of characters to introduce along with alot of material, the second half goes much faster as you are hooked and need to know what is going to happen. Sure it ties up neatly at the end (don't they all) but still it twists right until the end. Very good
Exciting. Surprising. Fast paced. Loved the characters. This was a first for me from this author. Has me looking for more. Intense.

Nine years ago, Matt Hunter was convicted of killing a man in a fight. Now, he is happily married with a baby on the way and a great job. However, his world starts to come undone when he gets a strange picture message on his new camera phone... it's his wife with another man. This is only the beginning of this fast paced, read-as-fast-as-you-can mystery. Coben does a great job weaving together so many memorable and interesting characters who are not always what they seem. I have not read a book yet, written by Harlan Coben, that I have not loved. He is an amazing writer and Scott Brick an awesome narrator.
I found Harlan Coben just last year and have read every single book he has on the market. I love his writing and the way he builds his characters. It is an absolute pleasure to read his books in order and see their progression.

You can't put this book down. It seems like there's a twist and turn with every chapter. A must read!
I thought the story was pretty good; it moved along well. The only thing that bothered me was the name of one of the main characters-Cingle whatever it was. I thought that was a pretty lame name to give a character. Wow.
Excellent book. Great twisting plot. I enjoy everything I have ead by this author.
An exciting, keep-you-guessing kind of story! Matt Hunter's past comes back to haunt him when all the signs from three murders are pointing to him. But not before he begins to question his own wife, Olivia, after receiving odd photos from her cell phone of her with another man. Lots of twists and turns, this was a suspenseful book that kept me involved all the way to the final page.

not the best i've read by coben, but STILL awesome!
Unlike some of his others, I figured this one out early. Still really good, though. Coben has a great way of creating a flawed protagonist, putting him in an unbelievably difficult situation with no way out, and somehow making the ending sweet and redemptive.
good book; somewhat predictable ending but still a good read.
Excellent Fast Pace book excellent highly recommended book
Another great Harlan Coben Book. They just get better and better.
Wow - this was a real page-turner! I love Harlan Coben's thrillers and this was one of the best yet.

I'm a big fan of Harlan Coben. Love his books and this one doesn't disappoint at all.
This is a very fast paced, page-turning thriller by the author of the Myron Bolitar series. This is a stand-alone.
As usual a great read in the end. I had a difficult time figuring out all the characters at first. Not my favorite Coben book but I always enjoy his books.
Two people, both with pasts that are shameful to them, and yet both of them are great people. Their lives take a turn when the past comes back to haunt them and the mystery is on! What a great story and a really enjoyable book.
Wow! Couldn't put this one down. Twists and turns in the plot kept me reading non-stop.
fairly decent, undersands use of language
The author is Harlen Coben. What more can I say?
What Coben does best is take readers into his characters' hearts and minds. His protagonists are just common folks, minding their own business when--bam!--they are drawn into a terrifying world of sordid crimes and mayhem." (taken from back of book)
Classic Coben. Good story, great mystery, unpredictable ending!
It was easy and fast to read but I didn't think the story was that great. Somewhat unbelievable when the author had one of the main characters running around and fighting with broken ribs and it didn't even phase him.
I really like this author the more I read him!
One night, Matt Hunter tried to break to break up a fitht- and ended up a iller.
Lots of twists and turnes in this fast moving story. One drink too many and a fight sets this guy up for future grief. Good read that I enjoyed

Another very excellent "Harlan Coben" suspence thriller.
A page turner, it kept me reading quickly. Lots of twists and turns in the book. Great book, as are all of his books.
Nine years ago, Matt Hunter innocently tried to break up a fight and instead became a convicted murderer. Now a free man, he takes nothing for granted, especially his wife and their expected baby. A shocking, inexplicable phone call to Olivia's cell phone is all it takes to shatter Matt's life once again. This is an exciting read with lots of unexpected twists and turns that spotlights how the decisions we make along our journey in life have repurcussions that we would never guess. I don't typically read action/adventure books, but I enjoyed this as much as my husband did.
Such a great book! It keeps you guessing with a lot of twists!
Matt Hunter made a mistake when he was 20 years old and paid for it with a four-year stint in prison that left him with a determination never to be locked up again. Finally, his life is back on the promising track he was taking before he accidentally killed a man: He has a good job, a newly pregnant wife he adores, and is about to close on the home of their dreams. Then he gets a couple of bizarre photos on his cell phone that seem to show his wife in a compromising position with a black-haired stranger. But before he can sort out who sent the anonymous pictures and why, he's running from the law--especially from the cop who was his best friend in grade school, and a sharp young detective who's stepped right into the middle of an FBI investigation spurred by the discovery that a dead nun who wasn't who she claimed to be is somehow mixed up in Matt and Olivia Hunter's life. Coben deftly wields a complicated plot involving a missing stripper, a dead gangster, an incriminating videotape, and a couple of agents who aren't quite who they seem to be, while Hunter manages to hold onto his faith in Olivia despite her clouded past and uncertain future. Like all Coben's protagonists, (including the hero of his popular series starring sports agent turned detective Myron Bolitar) Hunter is a nice, middle-class New Jersey boy who's still the innocent of the title, despite the miscarriage of justice that sent him to prison. Or was it? That's the moral question at the heart of this tightly constructed thriller, which will no doubt shoot directly to the top of the bestseller list, and deservedly so. --Jane Adams
Harlan Coben as always is a great read. Not one of his best, but enjoyable none the less
Very good thriller and well written. Mystery lovers will enjoy this book!
Another twist-filled book from "the modern master of the hook-and-twist"--Harlan Coben. In this case, Matt is a good middle-class suburban kid who, while in college, gets in a fight and accidentally kills another kid. He tells the truth, trusts the legal system and winds up in jail for 9 years. Upon leaving he finds the love of his life...Olivia.
From there on, it's all about Matt's love and belief in his wife. However, he learns that her whole past is based on the series of lies and cover-ups, and his happy, serene life begins unravelling very quickly.
A good read. You can't ever really guess what's going to happen in Harlan's books. But, he doesn't leave anything hanging. It's all in the story FOR A PURPOSE. At the end, you slap your forehead and say, "Why didn't I think of that?????"
In this book, too, he leads the reader to really sympathize with Matt. And, even tho it's a work of fiction, this story is a good reminder that unconditional faith and trust between a man and a woman might actually exist.

Latest Harlan Coben mystery. Good read.
A good book for when you are in the mood for some escape and light reading. It captured my attention throughout the entire book.
A paralegal, devoted husband and soon-to-be father, Matt Hunter has a not-so-secret past: when he was 20, in an attempt to break up a fistfight, he killed a man and served four years in prison for it. He's been out five years, living in his New Jersey hometown, and life is pretty good. But when his beloved wife, Olivia, goes away on a business trip, he receives 15 seconds of digital video on his camera phone showing her in a hotel room with another man. Meanwhile, Loren Muse, Essex County homicide investigator, is working on an unusual case: an autopsy of a nun reveals breast implants, which hint at a previous, not so holy life. After the FBI is called in, evidence links Matt to the nun killing. Like all of Coben's stand-alone thrillers, this is a long, extremely complex tale with plenty of gunfire, betrayals, late-night chases and good people forced to go on the lam. All the characters have extensive, interesting histories, which makes their actions believable under the extreme circumstances that engulf them.
A real page-turner.
Excellent read. Wonderful author!
these audio books help me with my long drives to work-comes in original box
Brimming with unnecessary and unnecessarily-named characters, this book exudes mediocrity. As a result, it receives a mediocre rating. The story fell from twisty to gnarled to hot mess and as astute as I usually am about guessing characters' motives and secrets, I couldn't; I blame that solely on a story too big for Coben to have thought out before his deadline came due. The compelling parts drove the novel and made me want to read on but the more I did, the more characters popped up out of thin air. It was like a Dickens novel with the number of people milling about. Was it really necessary to name Adam Yates' kids? They never even made an appearance! I found it difficult to keep up with who was who and consequently, couldn't keep an attachment to any of them. I suspect Coben had promised a fan or two he'd mention them in a book at some point and just wanted to get the whole thing over with.
Despite the above, this book is not a waste of time. Matt Hunter's story and fairytale romance with Olivia remained cute and pure throughout and I kept up with their predicament (albeit more out of curiosity than fondness). Mostly, I kept reading to find out where the crazy train stopped. Not bad but not good.

I love this author and this is one of his best books, ever! The Innocent was one of those can't-put-down stories for me. For one thing, the author had a way of making the end of every chapter a 'cliffhanger', which made me just HAVE TO read the next chapter to see what was going to happen. The twists and turns the story takes make it that much more interesting and suspenseful.
Everything is interwoven so well that you are immersed in the lives of every character.

This book was another well-written book by Harlan Coben. I LOVE his books. Can't wait for the next one!
harlan coben--always good
Though I finished this one, I didn't like it much. It was just very OK for me.
This is the second Coben book and I can't say that I'm in a hurry to pick up any others. His books seem very convoluted. That's the best word that I can come up with. I thought it of Just One Look and I thought the same thing here. He's definitely good with twists! As the reader, I never saw them coming and certainly couldn't predict any because there were to many.
Where I tend to look for and enjoy well developed characters, I don't get it from Coben because there are too many other things happening. The plot line was good and something different, but I'd have liked to know more about some of the key players. I never had that feeling of being in the characters shoes, or in their thoughts. It's that part of a book that suck me in give the book depth.
Overall, not good, not bad. It was a super slow read for me because I just couldn't get completely into it.

My copy has a different cover that PBS shows, mine being all text, mostly orange with a little black. Matt Hunter is a man who makes mistakes or innocently gets into various messes. Luckily, there are people like prosecutor Loren, who help to keep ex-con Matt from sloppingly being put back in jail due to chaos arising from his wife's past life. This has a different flavor than the Bolitar books.
