I've not seen the movie, but the novel is complex and rewarding. It does address some of the tough issues surrounding incarceration and the death penalty. That's okay, the issue is addressed from many sides and is enlightening.

Better than the movie. I am not much of a Steven King fan, but this book I did not want to put down.
Helpful Score: 1
I've read a few Stephen King novels and this was my favorite, by far.
Helpful Score: 1
Im not to sure how I feel about this book. I only read it because I really loved the movie. I enjoy reading the books that movies I love are made from because I like to get all of the extra details. This book really sort of mirrored the movie and most of the added elements are things that I really could have done without. Still I am glad I got the chance to read it.

The year is 1932, the place is E Block for convicted killers on death row.
This is one of Kings Best Stories, and I'm sure there are very few who do not know it.
It's about the guards and inmates and a mouse called jingles. A huge black man called John Coffey with special powers.
If you haven't seen the movie you must read the book, I read it after I saw the movie. This is a must read.....

One of the greatest books I have ever read. You love the charcters or you really hate them, but you feel something for every charcter involved, including the loveable little mouse Mr.Jingles.

This is an AMAZING book and probably one of the few that the movie brings it to life. You feel for every one of the characters that the author brings vividly to real life.

Stephen King, not quite as creepy as he usually is.
I'm a Stephen King lover and I rate this book in his top five. I cried.
Powerful book. Not typical Stephen King.
I've yet had time to read this book, and won;t since I don't read Stephen King much anymore. This book is nearly new, with just a little shelf wear.
excellent read
Excellent book.
awesome read, but then again it is the master SK so you know it will be good.
king at his best
This book speaks for itself!!!! WOW!!!!
I love this book. All of the short stories are together in this book.
I haven't even watched the movie yet because I don't want to ruin such a great book!
The book is so much better than the movie, there are scenes in here that just add so much to it, and give it so much more substance.
I could not put this book down! The surprises came at each page turn.
An intersting fantasy. I found only one mistake in this book, and it is probably an arguable one. It has to do with the crime scene in the prison near the end of the tale.
So well-written! King is a master story teller.
Excellent book. Well worth reading
Better than the movie.
Very unusual book by Stehpen King. If you like King you will like this
but I had a hard time getting into it.
but I had a hard time getting into it.
One of Stephen King's best books ever. I read it when it came out in the serial version. I loved it!
Great book, well-written. I highly recommend this book whether you're a Stephen King fan or not - it's a great read. My husband who is NOT a reader, even enjoyed this book!
Better than the movie.
Love this book. Actually the only one of Stephen King's books I was able to read. The movie was good, but all in all, the book is always better.
This book was fantastic, I was surprised it was Stephen King, given that it isn't his usual scary stuff. I loved this book
The 6-part boxed set novel that sent chills down my spine the first time I read it. John Coffey is about to walk the Green Mile to the electric chair. Did he really do it or was he in the wrong place at the wrong time?
The book is perhaps more suspenseful than the movie. The charters are more fully drawn and every book is harder to read as you are drawn more fully into the horror of The Green Mile.
Great book!
"I first read this book as the chapbook series back in the mid 1990's and found it a pleasure and very easy to read these small books mainly because of their size (about 80 pages each) but very hard to put down.
...I found myself watching in almost disbelief as to how closely the movie was made to the actual book. Everything described in the book was almost the same image on the silver screen as to what appeared in my head when I was reading the chapbooks...
...this book is a must read even if you...have disliked Stephen King novels in the past as it is a big step sideways for this author and has an appeal to an even greater audience." amazon review

outstanding!
I really enjoyed the story. Couldn't put it down. Just the right amount of creepy and strange.
"The Green Mile" is one of my favorite books. Though it's only the third King novel that I've read, I think it's safe to say that this is one of his best works. I've read "Carrie" and "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon," and both are great reads, but "The Green Mile" is my favorite King book so far.
The story runs the gamut of emotions. From the sick feeling when the reader finds out about the grisly deaths of two young girls, to the sorrow you feel when you realize what might have really happened and the joy experienced when an old friend is revealed near the end of the story. There are some great characters here as well, fleshed out to perfection so that the reader feels the emotions of each character. We are introduced to Paul Edgecombe, who is writing this serial, the enigmatic John Coffey, Brutal, Dean, Percy, the psychotic Wild Bill, and, of course, the simple Cajun man, Delacroix, and his best friend, Mr. Jingles.
As the story unfolds, you can't help but feel for the characters. I don't want to give away too many details, since most folks have probably read this book already or at least have seen the movie. All you really need to know is that these are some of the most emotion-laden characters you'll ever meet. For instance, you'll instantly feel sad for John Coffey and his tear-filled eyes as he asks Edgecombe if there's a light kept on at night because he is afraid of the dark. You'll also hate one particular character and probably rejoice when he gets his just desserts via a set-up partially pulled off with the help of Coffey.
Pick this one up if you want to read a great story. It isn't scary, which King is most known for, but it's just a wonderful tale that will move even the hardest heart to tears.
Highly recommended.

Brilliant story told only as Stephen King can.
There is a reason why Stephen King is so popular. Sure, he's had a few missteps but when King is on top of his game, he is quite simply one of the best. He has an uncanny ability to create characters who live and breathe. Even when I dislike the overall plot lines, I am drawn to King's works because the characters are so inviting and the experiences they have are so human. King makes this look easy, which I'm sure it isn't...I highly recommend it to fans and non-fans alike.
Great book! one of the few that, when turned into a movie, i still liked it! Of course, the book is always better. Definitely worth reading.
Really good, explains a lot more than the movie, the description of the characters and how humans react in certain situations is very interesting.
I love this book. I have actually read it multiple times and would read it again. There are not many books that I can do that with. It is definately worth the read
King does a great job with characterizations in this one, especially that of the giant Coffey.
GREAT BOOK, BETTER THAN THE MOVIE.
A thoroughly enjoyable King tale that draws you into the circumstances and makes you feel like you know the characters.
The Book version of the well known movie. Read and see how they are alike and how they differ.
Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E block. COnvicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keeping a date with Old Sparky, Cold Mountains electric chair.
The book is even better than the movie.
Big hit as a movie; if you're a Stephen King fan.....
Excellent book! This is actually a collection of short stories which makes up the novel. It reads more like a novel though.
One of my favorite Stephen King books.
One of King's finest.
you wont be able to put this book down
I liked this Stephen King very much. It was not a horror story like his others, but very very compelling nonetheless.
The setting is the small "death house" of a Southern prison in 1932. The Green Mile is the hall with a floor "the color of tired old limes" that leads to "Old Sparky" (the electric chair). The charming narrator is an old man, a prison guard, looking back on the events decades later.
Not your average Stephen King. I loved the book! So much better than the movie!
A very good story. I remember waiting in great anticipation for the next installment when this book was originally published as a serial.
AWESOME!!
I like the story. I would have rated higher, but I found the profanity and crude language quite distracting.
I was very impressed to see that the movie was pretty much exactly like the book. There were a few more details in the book but overall, I enjoyed the book.
There is so much feeling in these pages, that it is hard to describe. You will feel lots of emotion while reading this book. This is a book about the supernatural, as opposed to straight-up horror. True to King's style are the characters...you love them or you hate them. You always care about his characters one way or the other. There is no indifference while reading a Stephen King book and this book is probably the best example of that.
A good read.
Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary the worn men of block E. Convicted killers all waits his turn to walk the Green Mile, keep a date with "Old Sparky" Cold Mountain's electric chair. Prison guard Paul has seen oddities in his years working the Mile. Paul is about to discover the terrible, wonderous truth about coffey, a truth that will challenge his most cherished beliefs.
King became too wordly in many of his books, but not in this one, full of suspense and a really great read, a movie was made of this but the book is better!
King really shows his chops as a great storyteller in The Green Mile. I loved this book and all of its little, intertwining stories. A great read, start to finish. King might be a "horror" guy, but this book is just great American literature.

OK, slightly out of character Stephen King. Too long, like so many of his.......
