This was an unexpected delight (as fiction, not as theology). May hears the recitations of sins of those who are dying and eats the foods that represent those sins so that the dying will be absolved. The mystery comes in when the foods prepared do not match the recitations. May is not allowed to speak or interact with anyone outside of her duties as sin eater, and yet she manages to be part of a community, find comfort, and solve a mystery. I will be thinking about her character for a long time.
