Daniel MacKenzie has spent a night on the town winning at cards. When his competitors cannot pay up, they talk Daniel into joining them when they visit a medium. Violet Bastien is a fraud, but that doesn't stop her and her mother from moving around Europe, changing their names and bilking people of their hard-earned money. Daniel sees right through her, but is fascinated by the beautiful woman who seems to be able to fool everyone into believing her...everyone but Daniel, that is.

It's been a while since I read the books from the MacKenzie series. I was happy to see this book about Daniel since he was such a fun character as a boy in the previous books. Now he is all grown up, carrying on the scandalous reputation of his father and uncles before him. But Daniel is also an inventor, working on a motor car and trying to come up with a way to steer a hot air balloon. As he gets to know Violet, he sees that she is a lot like him, understanding engines and building her own inventions as part of her act as a medium.

I liked both the hero and heroine of this book. Although the ending felt a little rushed for me, it's still a great addition to the series. My rating: 4 Stars.
