Love the MacKenzie family and it was wonderful to revisit them. Glad that they had more than cameo appearances and yet didn't overshadow Daniel and Violet's relationship. Adored (actually, it was rather swoon worthy) how Daniel cherished and defended Violet and avenged her past. A very solid romance and good read. 4 stars.

We first met Daniel in book 1. Now he is all grown up.
I think this is another "it's me, not you" scenario. I was a bit disappointed. I liked Daniel. I liked Violet. But I just couldn't "get" the romance.

Daniel MacKenzie has spent a night on the town winning at cards. When his competitors cannot pay up, they talk Daniel into joining them when they visit a medium. Violet Bastien is a fraud, but that doesn't stop her and her mother from moving around Europe, changing their names and bilking people of their hard-earned money. Daniel sees right through her, but is fascinated by the beautiful woman who seems to be able to fool everyone into believing her...everyone but Daniel, that is.
It's been a while since I read the books from the MacKenzie series. I was happy to see this book about Daniel since he was such a fun character as a boy in the previous books. Now he is all grown up, carrying on the scandalous reputation of his father and uncles before him. But Daniel is also an inventor, working on a motor car and trying to come up with a way to steer a hot air balloon. As he gets to know Violet, he sees that she is a lot like him, understanding engines and building her own inventions as part of her act as a medium.
I liked both the hero and heroine of this book. Although the ending felt a little rushed for me, it's still a great addition to the series. My rating: 4 Stars.

Yes, it's a good romance & enjoyable.
But...it sure had a lot of flaws!
Poor Daniel; 18 for 4 yrs (several books) & in just 1 yr, he's aged 6 more! The changes in the children's ages just didn't seem to mesh...timeline seemed off.
Appreciated Daniel's patience...though disappointed by lack of foreplay when finally consummated...her fear would have left her dry & therefore led to the pain she was afraid of. Felt like an aborted effort, like the author didn't know how to move forward.
Disgusted with the revenge/avenge portion...after nearly dying it simply doesn't make sense to risk one's life again before healing. I would have been livid & not appreciated the sentiment as romantic & loving, but rather as selfish & stupid. I would have wanted my love alive & well & with me. It's a novel, so it could end well, but I found it undermined everything that had been said & done (Ian, H&h, father/Cam). I was also disgusted at the so easily resolved "don't worry, I'll kill him; because I am a policeman, I can get away with it."
As usual, some of the best parts were invention/adventures & so the children. She did a better job at incorporating the family into this story.
So, I enjoyed it, but experienced lots of frustration.

I loved the entire MacKenzie clan, but watching Daniel grow from an angry acting out kid to a responsible loving young man was a delight. His romance and protection of Violet was lovely.
