Orphaned when bandits torched her village, 13-year old Daine has managed to survive on her own until she finds work with the royal horsemistress. Impressed by the girl's knack with horses, Onua hires her on to help drive a herd of ponies to Tortall's capital.

It soon becomes clearn that Daine is special. Horses and other animals not only obey the girl, they come to her and seem to listen to her words. Though she refuses to admit that she may have magic, Daine can't hide the truth for long; her unpredictable powers had once led her to run with a pack of wolves.
