This short story revolves around Holt's oldest daughter. (The one he didn't meet until she was around 10 years old.) Lizzy is all grown up, done with her education and returning with her fiance to the McKettrick spread for Christmas to announce her engagement. During the ride, the train is derailed by an avalanche. You meet some interesting characters: a talking bird, a young mother and her children, a very ill soldier, a thoughtful peddler who turns out to be more than he appears to be, and a young doctor. Lizzy's fiance injures himself and she starts to have regrets about marrying him. In the meantime, she assists the young doctor in caring for the sick and injured, and the sparks soon fly.

This isn't a usual Linda Lael Miller book. There's not alot of passion and romance (usually her trademark). But, there are a couple of twists near the back of the book...one of which might help you get in the holiday spirit...and the warmth and family interactions of the McKettrick clan (from Grandpa Angus down to the smallest kiddies) during the Christmas season are always pleasant to read about.
