It is amazing how this book tied into the character Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick". Una Spencer's life is adventurous and thrilling long before she meets Captain Ahab. The first chapter pulls you in and you begin to meet the most wonderful characters you have ever known. I'm so glad the book was 666 pages because each page was something grand to look forward to.

I agree it was somewhat difficult to keep track of the present and future of several different characters in this novel, but once you got the hang of it, it wasn't so bad.
The story itself is amazing and I am so grateful for those who have the imagination and skill to write such a compelling story. I've read a lot of novels that take place in World War I and World War II and this certainly was one of the best.

I love historical novels but so many of them become romance novels instead. This was all that I wished for. The history is captivating and easy to follow. The characters even though it's a novel seem to stand true to what might have been according to the doctrines that have been left from that period. I really enjoyed it and have so many friends that want to borrow it from me.

The book might have been more relevant if I'd read it when first written, but it still helped me understand the Civil War history as seen from a Southerner's perspective. Traveling through the southern states as a Union soldier in this era, certainly put a spin on how he interacted with the people he met and the history he experienced. Well worth reading if you are interested in the whole picture of how the Civil War affected the country, even today.

Such an in-depth look at another person's life. It made me cringe at times and certainly brought tears to my eyes when reading what this character suffered throughout his life. At times it was almost too in-depth for me, his suffering being told over and over and it was a lot to bear. A great book but not one I felt comfortable encouraging others to read.

Characters jump off the page. Descriptions of Africa and the people that inhabit this country portrays the extreme poverty, sadness but the amazing resilience of those who live and love this country. A novel that reads like a journal that you don't want to put down.

A must read for those who love World War II novels. Leroy writes with such precise emotion, expression and clarity. Each page is a picture that pulls you further and further into her story. Beauty, extreme sadness and rich characters all wrapped together.
