Great ground based battle book. One man against an entire planet. It isn't the way he planned it, it is just the way it turned out. Too bad the author hasn't written anything else like this.

The only irritation about this book is the author interleaved two different story lines that only come to gether at the end of the book. My suggestion is to read the chapters about the Ants first - these stand quite well on their own - then if you want go back and read the skipped chapters.

This book could easliy have been titled: A Brief History of Dune because in the short 20 year subjective time period covered in the book many of the unique elements of the original Dune series come into being: Reverend Mothers, the Voice, Sand Worm riders, instantaneous star travel, the beginnings of the Trade Guild, the Swordmasters and House Corrino. We also see the apparent end of the Titans and Omnius. I didn't find the battle sequences to be nearly as interesting to read as Weber's or Card's in Ender's Game.

A buried human body discovered on Mars triggers a basic disease survival reaction in a co-habiting alien species called the Disty. In their culture anyone that has had contact with the body, or with anyone who has had contact with anyone who has had conact with the body, or with anyone who has had contact with anyone who has had contact with anyone who has had contact with the body ... is considered to be a potentially disease carrying person that has to be decontaminated -- even it the decontamination process itself kills them.

The description of revenge killings practiced by the Disty strongly reminds me of the sacrifices described by Card in _Speaker For the Dead_.

Back home on Thorfinni's world the 34th FIST lets off some steam after their war with the Skinks. Charlie Bass, far from dead, is left for dead by the Skinks after weeks of interrogation. Despite amnesia brought on by his interrogation, Charlie helps a small band of City of God survivors to prepare to unwelcome visitors. De Tomas, meanwhile, is busy building a new government and enacting reforms very reminiscent of pre-WWII Germany.
