365 Children's Prayers: Prayers Old and New for Today and Every Day
Review Date: 9/12/2007

Lovely color illustrations on every page. While there are formal prayers here too, the best ones are the ones in the words of children themselves, the simple language a child will understand.

All Earth Is Crammed With Heaven: Daily Reflections for Mothers
Review Date: 1/26/2007

Lovely five minute reflections for super-busy moms, each not more than 2 pages. Thoughtful, restful, prayerful.

Action from the opening pages will keep your young reader captivated. This is historical fiction set during the Crusades as a young apprentice unjustly accused of helping his master mint counterfeit coins flees with Richard the Lionheart to the Holy Land. My middle-schooler loved it.

"The Death of a King" is not part of the Hugh Corbett series and indeed predates the first Corbett novel. It is an utterly enjoyable, stand alone historical mystery account of the murder of King Edward II in 1327. Or so you thought! Was he murdered? Who's buried in Edward II's tomb? A short and engaging work that will send you to your history books.

Doctor Faustus: The Life of the German Composer Adrian Leverkuhn As Told by a Friend
Review Date: 10/24/2007
Helpful Score: 1

There is a mini-resurgence in interest in Thomas Mann these days. This edition is the wonderful translation by H. T. Lowe-Porter from 1948. Based loosely on Arnold Schoenberg and set in Germany before World War II, it is the application of the Faust legend to the life of a modern classical composer who sells his soul for earthly fame. There is a wealth of German culture (music, poetry, literature) within these pages. It is one of those books needing close reading, sunk deep in an armchair while winter whirls outside.

Fantasy? Horror? Mythopoetic? All of the above? A fictional memoir by a schizophrenic young woman who is obsessed by a painting and may be visited by the subject. Interweaving The Little Mermaid, Little Red Riding Hood tales, art, history, madness, and transformation. Very good writer. Some LGBT aspects.

Helpful Score: 1

When you are considering which edition of this book to acquire, this ISBN, published in 1979, is the movie tie-in cover featuring actress Lee Remick. "The Europeans" is a shorter, lighter Henry James in his earlier years and may be more accessible than "Portrait of a Lady" or "The Golden Bowl" to the reader just beginning to read James. Yet, the Jamesian characters are there in abundance, poor European royalty and rich Americans alike in a lovely setting.

The Golden Book of Stars & Planets
The Golden Book of Stars & Planets
Author: Judith Herbst
Book Type: Paperback

Review Date: 1/25/2008

Pluto is still a planet in this book, although the argument is made that maybe it is a wandering moon, instead. Stars and galaxies are also treated. Nice illustrations with some NASA photos. This ISBN is the stiff, "Golden Book" binding, not light-weight paper. Good for elementary students, 3rd grade to 7th grade.

This is the trade-paperback size version. My son loved it, funny and not too scary. Ibbotson has other wonderful books you should check out.

Harmony
Harmony
Author: Walter Piston
Book Type: Hardcover
  ?
Review Date: 10/13/2008

This is the 3rd edition of Professor Piston's classic, now in its 5th edition. While designed to teach the theory of musical harmony to college music majors, it is useful for anyone studying a musical instrument. (Mine was the piano) It covers tonality, harmonic progression, modulation and many, many chords. (Diminished 7th, anyone? Augmented 6th?) Exercises included for each chapter. If you can read music, you can read this book.

History of Philosophy: Modern Philosophy
Review Date: 10/24/2007

The item description above is woefully inadequate. In the 1960's, the paperback editions published by Image Books divided each volume in Copleston's series into 2 parts. This isbn represents Volume 7, Part II: Schopenhauer to Nietzsche and begins with Chapter 12. Basically, 19th century German philosophy. In addition to the aforementioned you will find sections on Marx, Kierkegaard (Denmark is almost Germany) and the revival of metaphysics. The entire series is wonderful.
