Animal Poems (Poetry for Young People)
Review Date: 10/28/2016
Helpful Score: 1

This is a colorful book with poems of very different animals: cats, tigers, gulls, mouse, birds, elephants and many more. The poems are from diverse authors. I like that each poem has a brief introduction that helps understand the poem. It, also, has a very nice introduction that talks about how the poets interact and write about animals.

This book is very easy to read because it has short prose and poetry. It says so much in a few words. María lives between two worlds. She lives with her father while her mother stayed in Puerto Rico. She must adapt to a very different world and meets some interesting people while she
shares her new life in NY.

I don't share all her views on Puerto Ricans who live in NY, but her account sounds honest and is touching.

I recommend it highly.

Great book, that's available in English and other languages. I found it incredible as it shares how the Mirabal sisters dealed living under the dictatorship of Trujillo in Dominican Republic. Although the book says it's a fictionalized account, it felt very real and I could see the writer realized an excellent investigation to tell this story. I highly recommend it if you like historical books, Caribbean topics or realistic stories.

Cole writes with realism. She doesn´t hide anything in this tale about a 13 year old girl who must tell her story after witnessing a suicide and murder. The vocabulary is simple, yet strong and specific. The story full of the realities some young people face.

Really liked this book. Stories portray not only the inmigrant experience, but also very different life stories that reflect the human spirit: how difficult it is to express love sometimes, hard alternatives for working inmigrants, ghosts from the past that haunt, learning to forgive, healing family wounds. No preaching, just the sharing of experiences.

They sound so honest and seem so real. Did these people just come from an imaginative mind?

I read this book slowly because it's a book to meditate and see the scripture in new ways. It's a book that brings hope and brought new perspectives I didn't expect. There were some chapters that touched me deeply. If you want to learn about God's mercy and grow in God's word this is the book for you.

This is a book that makes you think about the acceptance of newcomers, about the rules in societies and how they can help or harm. The author has written a book that remains as actual and necessary now as when it was written in the eighties.

I invite you to read it.

This book was so real. The problems Annabelle, the protagonist has with her friends, the boy she meets and the stories she´s not ready to tell make you keep on reading. I really liked how she mixed her personal story with that of her two sisters and her family. They all change and grow.
The characters are very original, especially Annabelle and the boy she meets.

What did I like about this book? Written in first person it seems to talk to you. You share the sorrow of a mother who loses her newborn kid in mysterious circumstances and how she fights to find out what happened and in the process unites with other women who share her fate. Why are so many babies dying in the hospitals? Read to find out. Only 167 pages.

This is a lovely book that unites poetry and history. Through short poems we can go back to another time and learn how some of the rights we take for granted were obtained with sacrifice. It's a lovely book.
