First in the Abram's Daughters servies, this book gives a deeper look at the ramifications and effects of Amish courting customs. People of deep faith can let human passions twist them from total uprightness - and other people of deep faith may submit to the injustices others' choices have on them, and be blessed by closeness with God, even when the injustice may continue for years.

With the current (October, 2006) killing at an Amish school, and the forgiving response of many in that faith community, we are inspired to learn what is good from their deep desire to obey the Law as expounded by their leaders, and also learn what is good from the faith-filled individuals within the group maintain their ties to their church brother while pursuing personal knowledge / friendship with God based on the sacrifice of Christ even above obedience to their revered Ordnung.

The whole O'Malley series of suspense / romance is terrific! Seven adults who grew up in an orphanage together "adopted" each other and formed their own family. As adults they legally changed their name to O'Malley, and are tightly bonded. This one is about big brother Marcus, a federal marshall charged with security for a legal convention at which several federal judges are present. Without advance notice, the White House puts one of them on the short list for a new Supreme Court Justice, and Marcus' job grows exponentially more difficult. A judge is murdered, and Marcus must protect the only eye witness of the crime - a charming, politically savvy (female and single!) speechwriter for the Governor of Virgina, whose parents were best friends with the murdered judge. You'll meet all the other O'Malleys, too, and want to read the other five books in the series.
