This was a pretty good read. It was short but the characters were all awesome (though their were too much of them in my opinion). The sheer number of them was really unnecessary and confusing and annoying, but surprisingly the book was still interesting. It was amazing that she could do so much in so few pages. The ending was also wonderfully sweet.

The only thing that really put me off was that Nepenthe is described as having dark skin (her skin stays "hazelnut" coloured though she hardly ever goes outside) but the girl on the front and back covers is really white. This isn't a fault of McKillip's necessarily because the publisher and artist had that job but it still really upset me.

This was a really cute story. Entertaining and sweet. I like the idea of a reworked fairy tale. The only thing bad that I have to say is that the ending was a bit weak. I understood what happened, kind of, but I would have liked it to be fleshed out a bit more. Something more solid would have been nice. Instead, it was a few pages and left me unsatisfied. I mean, the story felt done but not enough development at the end.

This book was just way too long and most of the time boring. I had the dynamic of Cat and Vai. More often than not I wanted to backhand every single character because they are all ridiculous. I don't even want to read the last book because it was so uninteresting. And the ending just angered me. They doesn't get a one because there were some interesting moments that held my interest but not enough of them to get more stars.

I give the book a 3.5/5 overall.

In terms of racially diverse characters, its a 5/5. There are super awesome characters of all races and that made me super happy!

In terms of the story, its pretty interesting. It was true that there were some pretty cool plot twists though and I wanted to know what happened so I couldnt put it down.

The writing was mediocre though. It drawled on a lot at time and I would have put it down if I didnt want to see how the story was going to develop.

It was a book that kept my attention pretty well, so Id say read it.

Good writing as usual. The characters were great and Kay was actually another interesting character to have the POV of. I don't give it a four because I felt that it was weak in the ending of a series. I would be perfectly content if their was another book but I also understand why that didn't happened because of how it ended. So it's just that it was kind of iffy but not iffy so much that I hated the book because of it.

It was good. Almost as good a fire logic. Except it was confusing and strange a lot of the time. I mean, it made sense but it was still just to odd for it to settle properly in my mind. The new characters were very interesting though and I got invested in them quickly. The non-conventional family structure was great to read. The ending was unfortunately off-putting. Just the idea that they're basically destroy some people's identity because Zanja is holding a grudge. I really don't feel comfortable with that. It really ruined the whole book for me, I think.

It was a pretty good book. The characters are pretty interesting as is the plot. The story's excitement really stops at the middle of the book. Really nothing really happens but just basic story moving stuff. That kind of bothered me when I finally realized it was ending. It also bothered me how awfully misogynistic the idea of women not being able to become Wraeththu is. I mean, we have one female character who kind of does something at least, but other than her the treatment of women is off-putting. Pellaz mentions it a few times and Storm talks about women's possible loneliness but nothing is done to correct this. I get that there're more books but still. Not even a hint. And, yes. I understand that they are hermaphroditic but everyone is referred to as "he." Yeah, I guess it causes pronoun problems and the book is from the 80s but no one WANTS to be "female." No one ever says, "oh, I prefer 'she'." I suppose it will be interesting to see how the next generation breed by Wraeththu behaves, especially since creating a new pronoun was mentioned in the book, though it was in passing.

ANYWAY. It was fun to read and Constantine really draws you into the story and makes you want to stay there. It ended too soon, if you ask me, but I guess that can happen when it's a memoir from a young person.

What a great book! It didn't take too long for me to get into it. All the characters were wonderful and the story was very interesting. I'm not saying it was the most amazing book but it was satisfying and entertaining in a way that makes it worthy of five stars. I mean, brown women-loving women being boss. What more do I want out of a book?

It was indeed an entertaining read. It started a bit slow and went slowly but after a while, it was interesting enough that I didn't mind. It was a bit ridiculous and predictable as far as the parallels to today's world which make me roll my eyes because it means that nothing truly compelling occurred. I stand by that it was entertaining and for that I thank Paula Volsky.

The story was pretty fun but very slow. Nothing really important happens until like 200 pages in. For the most part, it read like fanfiction. Royston kept going on and on about his feelings and doubts and nothing was really pushing the story forward. You know, it's a good story but not exactly the best novel.

I do have to ask. Why were there no major female characters? There weren't even kind of important side female characters. :/ It just feels really misogynistic, even if that was unintentional.

I still enjoyed it though and I look forward to reading the next books to see if things improve. There's a lot of potential here.

So much potential, but so poorly executed.

First of all, the writing was all right. It started off a little shaky but improved a lot over the book and I got into it enough that I wanted to continue reading.

This book is really something and in a bad way. Shinn tries to do a whole lot and it ends up being WAY too much. I had very high hopes for this book. The racial and sexual politics intrigued me at first. The set up of EXTREMELY flawed characters was nice in the beginning. There was room for a lot of growth. However, that growth never really happens as much as it should. I mean, we have a bit of it. But the "change" wasn't actually that far from the original points of views of the characters anyway.

Shinn really should have also stuck to just race. She brought in homosexuality (and made a really mind-boggling distinction between female and male homosexuality that was unbelievable in such a society) and abortion, but she never dealt with them. I mean, we have two conversations where it's like, "yeah. We believe this and you believe that and we both back no sense," in terms of homosexuality, but it's never resolved. On one hand, we're cool with female homosexuality, but even though Nolan spends quite a bit of time talking about his feelings about male homosexuality, it's never resolved. I mean, why put it in, if you're not going to actually tackle it? It makes it seem as if you're supporting that kind of idea. And then abortion is brought up for literally no reason. I got the idea that Shinn is anti-abortion because that side kinda wins the argument (even after comparing abortion to murdering children um . . . ).

Race is dealt with acceptable for the most part, though I must point out that we never actually meet a "good" guldman even though we have several "good" blueman characters. It could have been done a whole lot more effectively but it wasn't atrocious. And sex is done about the same.

I think Shinn tried to hard to reverse all the conventions of our world and ended up messing up big time.

The romance is kind of weird but turns out relatively cute, which was nice.

This was such a fun read! I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. The characters are all interesting. I always love the idea of gods and humans interacting. Jemisin does a wonderful job here. The first person narration never got annoying and I just always wanted more. The conversational tone was also very nice and helped keep me interested. The ending was a bit watery to me but it was still an interesting ending. Plus, it was a debut novel so it's pretty great even with that flaw.

It took a while to get into it but the wait was worth it. The world Jemisin created is amazing! All the characters were well done and I ended up feeling for every single one. The writing style was also good. It was a much better written than The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. She improved well over the time. Read it. The ending is gorgeous. Most things about this book are gorgeous actually.

I don't want to give it five stars because I couldn't finish and I now hate the book but that's no fault of the book itself.

This is actually amazing. I haven't been emotional involved in a book like this for SOSOSO long but the plot went a way that messed me up so bad I couldn't finish. I dunno. It's great and one of the best stories I've read in a REALLY long time.

If there was ever a book that was too good, this is it.

Took forever for it to get somewhere where it 100% made sense but it was worth it. The development was really great and I loved everything that happened. The points of view were great because you get both sides so you know what both are thinking and you can be torn apart even more by misunderstandings! Hahaha! It's so great. At first, I was gonna give this a four but the ending was just SO LOVELY that it deserved the extra star. I can't wait to continue the series!

Nothing really happens by way of action but it was an interesting read all the same. The politics, which is really all the book was, was pretty great to read about. It was a great story and the addition of Tabby's point of view was really great. I was skeptical about her addition at first but it worked out really well. I'm glad things didn't work out really sappy or easily for anyone. Exactly what I wanted to happen, happened and that's generally unusual for me with book. Haha.

Interesting story. Great writing. Not much real action.

Wow. This turned out as good as everyone says! I feel like that rarely happens for me, so this was exciting. The action could be a bit overwhelming with all the allomancy, but it got a lot easier as everything went on. The book was long enough that I got to understand the metals.

All the character's were pretty well done. I love Vin. At first, her personality seemed off, but I think that was partially intentional and, later, her character flows flawlessly. Kell, I also liked, though not as much. I dunno he was really amazing, but it became kind of unbelievable at the end, though I was more than willing to ignore such a tiny misgiving. The addition of the third POV at the end was interesting. When I saw it, I was kind of upset, but the parts were short enough and the POV interesting enough that it actually worked out quite well.

Overall, a very awesome book. Totally lived up to expectations. I can't wait to continue the series!

As well written and exciting as Point of Hopes but the ending was a bit too sudden for me so it doesn't get the five stars. Philip and Nico are just way too cute. The mystery was pretty interesting and well developed. I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up.

Well written with a complex and engaging story line. I couldn't put the book down! My only problem was that the world was a bit TOO complicated at times. Hahaha. It made my head spin though I understood what was happening . . . essentially. It was still an amazing read. You should pick it up. You won't be sorry.

Katherine was cute. I like the idea of a lady turning into a swordsman instead of the other way around. The fact that she was forced into it (which is usually the opposite of the story so that's a nice twist on convention) made me really interested in seeing how she would resolve her new role. I'm glad that she came to like it and became good at it.

I thought a bit more was going to happen in the book. It ended being a bit boring for me coming down in the last third. I mean, it was nice and I enjoyed it but it felt lacking somehow. I would still recommend it though.
