A smart and fun read, Fair Coin draws the reader in with the main character. Without being overtly moralizing, the book presents divergent perspectives on the value of life when characters are confronted with the small magnitude of the individual lives they and others lead in the context of, well, everything. A universal problem entertainingly explored. The story will keep you hooked, and the ideas will keep you thinking. Highly recommended.

Very well done book, really lets you get to know the people involved. Sad, of course, but beautiful in its way.

Where the Buffalo Roam: The Storm over the Revolutionary Plan to Restore America's Great Plains
Review Date: 5/16/2010
Helpful Score: 1

This book was well-written, but it wasn't quite what I had hoped it would be. While I was looking for more information about the idea of the Great Plains restoration, this book focused on the controversy the idea generated, which I suppose is right there in the title, but hey, wishful thinking. Matthews doesn't neglect this entirely, she just spends much more time documenting the reaction of the people who live in the Plains to an idea of which I didn't feel I ever got a full measure.
