First rate historical fiction. The publisher put the book in the category of "fantasy". I feel that does not give full credit to the author's accomplishment. By all means read the other three (Dreaming the Bull, Hound, & Serpent Spear). The story, as we know, is a tragedy; but it is hugely compelling.

Third in a series of eight. Good history, well told.

Scarrow has a whole series of books dealing with life in the Roman Legions in the 1st century A. D.. His continuing central characters are a tough professional soldier and young recruit struggling to make his way in harsh circumstances. This is the third book in the series; and the "recruit" has had some seasoning by this time. The two find themselves involved in adventures better described as "misadventures". In this tale they are introduced to the Boudica of legend. The inclusion of that character made the book of interest to me; but the predicaments the two friends find themselves in and their daring and innovative solutions are always entertaining.
