In this novel the action begins on page one and doesn't end until the last page. I really enjoyed it, but there were times I wondered if our two Roman heroes were going to make it through the book alive.

At the same time, we are introduced to two people important in Roman-British history.

Scarrow has a whole series of books dealing with life in the Roman Legions in the 1st century A. D.. His continuing central characters are a tough professional soldier and young recruit struggling to make his way in harsh circumstances. This is the third book in the series; and the "recruit" has had some seasoning by this time. The two find themselves involved in adventures better described as "misadventures". In this tale they are introduced to the Boudica of legend. The inclusion of that character made the book of interest to me; but the predicaments the two friends find themselves in and their daring and innovative solutions are always entertaining.
