The Prairie Girl's Guide to Life: How to Sew a Sampler Quilt & 49 Other Pioneer Projects for the Modern Girl
Review Date: 11/22/2011

I wanted this book for awhile but when I got it.... lame. The "projects" seemed to me to be kind of boring and the instructions were very simplistic. It suggests embroidering a haystack on a towel or pillowcase. But there's not design to trace which would be pretty standard for embroidery.
Then some projects that didn't seem very prairie girl to me... make night cream, create calling cards. Just didn't really turn out as fun of a book as I expected.

I really enjoyed this book. Growing up as rather a tomboy myself, I enjoyed Hannah's independence and unwillingness to be like all the other girls. I enjoyed the story and found myself flying through the pages to see what would happen next.

I found this book difficult to read. The entire book is very dark and heavy. That being said, it is also intriguing enough that I kept on going. On the one hand I wanted to stop reading it, but on the other hand I was sucked in and wanted to know what would happen next.
It is a well written book but if you are easily disturbed by dark themes like murder, incest, extreme greed, madness, etc. this will not be the book for you.

I have written other Philippa Gregory books and this surprised me by how very different (theme wise) that is was. Wideacre is purely fiction, where I had grown used to the historical fiction nature of many of Gregory's other novels.
