A young man leaves home at the age of 17 in 1830 to be free of the constraints of society and become a mountain man like his Uncle Zeb. A story of adventure and survival in the wilderness, and friendships made and lost. Really no plot, but beautifully written. It read like a movie, I could picture everything. It ended rather abruptly, but I would give this one 3 1/2 to 4 stars.

My 5 star rating is for the audiobook version. They had a cast, not just one narrator. I don't think I would have done the voices justice for each character in my head by reading the words from the page. It is a story about sex, drugs and rock & roll, clashing egos and artistic collaboration. I highly recommend the audio version of this book.

It is a beautiful story of grandmothers, mothers, daughters and granddaughters through a line of five generations. Each of these women is head-strong, but also heart-strong. Their stories are so beautifully written one can tell that the author loves each of these women so very much.

Dying to Meet You (43 Old Cemetery Road, Bk 1)
Review Date: 9/28/2020

I was laughing out loud. This story takes place in Ghastly, Illinois. The characters in this story communicate by writing letters to each other, and we get a glimpse of the local news from the Ghastly Times. I cannot wait to read the second book in the series. Really, this book took me back years to the days of reading the Amelia Bedelia stories as a child.

This is a book about the first thirty years of a young man's life and the lessons he learned along the way. It's about "thinking big, chasing dreams, staying focused, overcoming obstacles, embracing rejection, shattering stereotypes, addressing intolerance, working hard, giving back...and always listening to your Grandma." (You're going to love Greg's grandma!) It's an uplifting, nonfiction story. It's an easy read, only 93 pages, and you will want to share it with everyone you know. This is Bruce Bair's memoir about growing up in America's heartland, the son of a farmer in Northwest Kansas in the 1960's. It's not so much a story from beginning to end, but the chapters are more like topics he chose to write about.

Her twentieth novel, an exciting tale of intrigue in the Bavarian Alps, takes the reader to the Grand Duchy of Bruxenstein, where lovely Francine Ewell had eloped with her suitor, Baron Rudolph, heir to the throne. Left behind was her younger sister, Pippa, who must face alone the wrath of their dour grandfather, autocratic master of Greystone, the brooding manor house in Kent.

Pippa's only solace in her loneliness comes from Francine's letters, which speak of her husband's devotion, of their young son, of their intention to bring Pippa to live with them in a land straight out of a fairy tale. But the letters stop abruptly, and Pippa seems doomed to a loveless match arranged by the overbearing patriarch who heads her family. And then she stumbles upon a newspaper clipping that tells of a murder in a faraway country; the victims are Rudolph of Bruxenstein and his mysterious 'companion,' a beautiful Englishwoman.

Yet Pippa is sure that the 'companion' was her sister and that Francine and Rudolph had indeed married. She is also sure that there was a child. But no one shares her certainty, and soon she realizes that no one really cares to know. But she has to know the truth.

So Pippa sets off across Europe, bound for a passionate adventure, a romance of her own, fraught with danger, duplicity, and irresistible emotion. She sought her sister's fate...but she was to find her own.

I did not finish this one. I got about half way through the audio book. If I had been reading a hard copy, I probably would not have made it that far. I kept hoping it would get better, but I give up.

This was the first book I read by Fern Michaels. And even though it is the 2nd in the sisterhood series, I won't be reading another one. I almost didn't finish it from the beginning, but stuck with it. The middle was very good, but I didn't like the ending...too much of a stretch of the imagination, maybe? I had too many questions left at the end, too.

From Dominick Dunne, the author of The Two Mrs. Grenvilles, comes a richly textured novel of contemporary New York society, from those born to it to those who would kill to join it. People Like Us is a comedy of manners and ultimately a tragedy of morals, the story of the era of the eighties, when the rich went public.

Peppermint Twist: The Mob, the Music, and the Most Famous Dance Club of the '60s
Review Date: 11/1/2015

The title of this book sums up what this book is about. I enjoyed learning about what the nightlife was like in NYC and Miami, whether you were working it or a patron.

There are a lot of good stories in this book. My favorite references Elvis Presley beginning on page 217 via a patron at Cami's Miami restaurant. Elvis is NOT connected to the Mob, but he does have a unique connection to some players from the undefeated Miami Dolphins Super Bowl team.

The bibligraphy contained in this book is a good reference if you want to read more on this era. Also,it contains an extensive index that makes it easy to find people that are mentioned throughout the book.

The Reconciling Parish: A Process for Returning or Alienated Catholics
Review Date: 11/8/2008

In this resource book for parish staffs and leaders, Fr. Brennan addresses a subject that is often laden with difficulty--a need for parishes to engage in a ministry of reconciliation to returning and alienated Catholics.

This thought-provoking analysis recommends a blending of the RCIA and the ancient Order of Penitents into a remember, return, and rebirth process that gives greater care and ministry to the hurt or alienated member of the Church. An excellent companion book to "The Evangelizing Parish," this book includes model sessions to help the reconciling parish focus on the mysteries of the Creed, and an appendix composed of adaptations of the RCIA for this reconciliation process.

Review Date: 4/7/2017

This book is is the story of Scott & Kimberly Hahn's conversion to Catholicism. I like how their story is told from both points of view. The two meet in college, both are theology majors and dream of ministering to the people of their Church. They are very active in their Church after graduation. However, the more they study the Bible, the closer they come to understanding the teaching of the Catholic Church. They call their theologian friends and professors to plead with them to point out the flaws in their thinking, because the last thing they want is to be in agreement with the teaching of the Catholic Church. It was a compelling read.

"There is nothing we can do to make God love us more. There is nothing we can do to make God love us less." This is a book about grace and how hard it is to live a life of grace. A difficult and uplifting book at the same time.

A Whistler in the Nightworld : Short Fiction from the Latin Americas
Review Date: 4/2/2009

Each of the twenty-one stories is preceded by a short bio about the author, which includes a list of awards they have received for their writing, and titles of their other works. As a result, I added a couple of these authors to my reminder list. I really enjoyed these short stories, and I only skipped one of them when it didn't catch my interest in the first page. Each of these stories would be great for a discussion group.
