I was unable to put this book down. The story is riveting. It gives a very good background of China from the early 1900's to present. It is about a girl in a family of 7 children who was not shown love from her parents. The family dynamics are fascinating and her triumphs despite her upbringing are redeeming.

Another great book in this series. Keeps you guessing until the end. I like the character development of the relatives of Benni, the main character, and look forward to seeing their relationships continue. I have already ordered the next two books in the series and look forward to reading them.

I have read the whole Mitford series as well as the first Father Tim book; loved them all. However, I could not get throught this one. The story didn't seem to go anywhere ( I read half of the book) and the pages of the diary were very boring to me. Maybe the story comes together in the end, but I was just forcing myself to contine reading it. Sorry, Jan Karon.

I found this book absolutely enthralling from beginning to the end. It was quite interesting to read about a feminist in the beginning of the 1900's and her struggles with her personal decisions. It was very well written and I am interested to see what else this author will write.

I finished reading this book because I couldn't imagine how it would end. Very disappointed in the ending. The characters were unsympathetic people, for the most part and I really didn't care what happened to them.

The main character, Mary Sutter, is a young woman with an excellent reputaion as a midwife; yet, she yearns to become a doctor/surgeon at a time when it is an impossible goal for a woman. The story starts at the beginning of the Civil War and much can be learned about the war strategies, medical practises, and atmosphere of the country at that time. It contains history lessons, medical background, and a love story. Very well written.
