This is a friendly read with twists you do not expect. It has good character development and Montana old time life represented well. It is not a book you can't set down, but one that is fun to relax with.

I loved the information about the foreclosure meltdown and why it happened, but the second half drags a bit as it seems repetitive in the why examples. I have not seen the movie yet.

Jane Smiley is a good writer who researches well. The book follows a family by having each chapter taking place in one year with a few events and the next chapter will be one or two years later. For instance, one chapter deals with how family members of different ages deal with the Vietnam war, protests, etc. I gave it three stars because it did not compel me to abandon my daily routing to sit down and read more such as a great mystery would.

I really enjoyed this book because I learned details about existing in the Nazi era that I'd not known about, such as food stamps, clothing allowances, etc. Being a true story, it was a real eye opener about survival.

Very enjoyable and you learn a lot about more modern China. I didn't rate it 5* because you could put it down, unlike some mystery stories, but I always looked forward to reading more at night.

I really enjoyed. The story is simply written, could be realistic human behavior, and has twists and turns you don't expect.
