Dara Horn is a great writer, and I loved much of this book. Unfortunately, the final chapter simply didn't work for me and seemed rather tacked onto the book, which is why I gave it three stars only. Someone else may be mesmerized by the ending, though.

A mystical, imaginative, magical book! I enjoy reading a book that both entertains and teaches. This did both.
I liked this book, but not as much as I liked the other book by her that I read. It was unusual that's for sure.
This is a gorgeous multi-layered book. It spans decades of seemingly unrelated stories, and yet somehow there are little puzzle pieces that fit together. Spiritual and uplifting.
A mystery about the theft of a Chagall painting. Shows a lot of research. Well written.
This work of fiction dabbles in jewish & russian history of the 1940-60. It weaves many strands of stories of related family members in a creative way, but needs close reading to keep them straight. A central event is the theft of a Chagall painting and how that art work is part of the history of this family. Author uses language very resourcefully.
I really enjoyed this book. It has interesting historical context and lots of unique ideas about our world and "the world to come."
