I enjoyed this author's previous book, One Thousand White Women, much more than this one which had too many stereotypical characters and was so brutal and depressing. It was interesting but is not something I'd willingly reread.

Jim Fergus does for the Apache in this book what he did for the Cheyenne in his earlier work. Although mostly fiction, his depiction of the tribes and the every day lives they lead brings them to you as people, not just stereotypes.
Hope there will be more forthcoming from Mr. Fergus.

Just as good as the first book I read by him, ONE THOUSAND WHITE WOMEN. He is one of the best authors I have ever read.....Highly recommend reading as of his books.

I opened this book just to get a feel for it and couldn't put it down!
In journal format, the main character narrates a fascinating tale of his adventures in the Southwest and Mexico. A trip to go into a remote area of Mexico to barter for a boy who was kidnapped by the Apaches several years before takes some unexpected turns.
It is well-written and along with the drama, has a fine sprinkling of humor.

I knew I'd like it as I LOVED 1000 White Women & I was not disappointed. Believable & based on 1 bit of a true story. Wish he'd write some more
