Nothing ever happens in Toby's small Texas town. Nothing much, that is, until this summer. This summer, everyone seems to be leaving. Toby's mother leaves home to be a country singer. His best friend Cal's older brother goes off to fight in Vietnam. But their sleppy little town is about to get a jolt with the arrival of Zachary Beaver, billed as the fattest boy in the world. There has never been anyone like Zachary. Toby is entralled with him and his tales of the people and places he's known. Infact, Toby realizes there's a lot this town has never seen. Toby knows there's more to Zachary than the stories he tells, and he wants to know the boy behind the billing. Toby is in for a summer like any other, a summer sure to change his life.

A YOUNG ADULTS BOOK. GREAT READING FOR BOYS
Helpful Score: 1
Interesting book about 2 young boys who befriend a 600 lb. boy who is left in their town by his guardian after traveling through their town to raise money as a "freak" show. Great for teens and young adults. This is a heartwarming story of friendship and learning to accept people for who they are on the inside.
Book was ok. It was rather sad to me
It was a great book! Amazingly beautiful, the character of Zachary is OUTSTANDING, although I was annoyed by Toby every once in a while, nonetheless it was fantastic, worthy of five stars!
An excellent book about human nature and relationships in the teen years.
This is a great book and wonderful for many different levels.
I loved, loved, loved this story. Small town life, and how the minds of some are more open than it would seem.
Great book for teens and pre-teens
Told from the POV of 13 year old boy from the Texas Panhandle in 1971.
A great children's book!
