This book is poetry in a novel form. From the very first sentence, I was hooked. A haunting mystery and a beautiful love story that shows love has no limits. Fantastic imagery, beautiful language, this book is amazing.

Loved this book, a real life mystery and love story about WWI
Helpful Score: 1
I loved this book more than I can really say. It was very confusing at times, as I put the book down for a day or two and the characters' names got me disoriented. HOWEVER, it mattered little, if at all. I just kept reading and felt myself being absorbed into the book. I will definitely read it again to get an even better grasp of the storyline.
I've recommended it to so many people already, including my dad, who said the cover looked soap-opera-ish. The title and the cover art are misleading. The book is simply a mystery about a strong-minded woman determined to find her mate.

Romantic novel about a young Frenchwoman searching for answers about the fate of her fiance at the front in WWI.
I couldn't put it down!
Surprisingly, I didn't enjoy the book as much as the movie, but it's still a gorgeous novel.
The story of a young French woman who searches for her fiance missing from WWI. The book recounts what happened to the young man during the war years.Interesting puzzle that keeps your attention until the end.
This was an excellent book!
First line: "Once upon a time, there were five French soldiers who had gone off to war, because that's the way of the world."
I enjoyed the book. The story was slow to move and at times confusing of characters.
Better than the movie!
Very engaging book--not at first but once it starts to THUMP you are right there with Mattie, trying to figure it all out and you won't be able to put the book down. Would make a great movie--maybe it's already been a movie and I missed it?
I loved this book so much!
Set during WWI this is the story of a young woman's search for her fiance whom she believes is alive despite reports to the contrary. Unable to walk since childhood she is fearless in her quest. This is a "mystery, a love story, and an extaordinary portrait of life in France before and after the War".
