I have spent the past fifteen years collecting books on interior decorating with the hope of making my home look better. This is the ONLY book one will ever need to accomplish that task. It tells you everything interior decorators know, but dont want you to know. The rules you will learn work with any decorating syle eg traditional or contemporary. First learn the rules, and then maybe you can break them. But if you don't know the rules, how can you accomplish your goal? With this book, you can make your house look and feel like new without spending a lot of money. It gives you permission to start with what you already have. Once you do that, you can add to your pieces of furniture and art to make each room exactly the way you want it to be. Ms Ward addresses each room of the house separately. I have found gems of information for each room in this book. Once I got this first book of Ms Ward's, I just had to have another two that I have found. Dont hesitate to get this book! Don't get it for photos to copy! Get it because you can use your own furniture and belongings to create YOUR unique home. Best of all, you can do it without spending ANY money. How good is that?! I'm telling you, it doesnt get any better.

This book was disappointing; perhaps it's because I am more visually inspired. The photos are all black and white which made it hard for me to appreciate them. The advice is good, but the writing style just did not grab my attention.

I completely agree with Carol S. There are some principles of interior design that make or break a room; they are simple and they are in this book. With the knowledge I got from this book, I have been able to make my (mostly second-hand) furniture look good in even the wierdest apartments. She also shows you what to do with huge rooms and not a lot of furniture. This isn't at all like the Trading Spaces books which describe how to paint or fake things so they look better. This is about how to rearrange your stuff so it looks better.

I have read just about all of the popular books on home decorating, but this is the definitive book. Ms Ward gives you all the info you need to decorate your home with the items you have. She provides rules that other interior decorators won't give to you. You can improve the looks of your home by simply following these easy rules. Best of all you can make your home look great without spending any money.

If you need to have photos to copy, this is not the book for you. Each home is unique so no two should be alike.

Best of luck.
