I was disappointed with this book. I was excited to read it, but was disappointed almost as soon as I began reading it. The main character is annoying and completely unlikeable and I could have done without the explicit sex scenes - they were very out of place & added nothing to the book! I have not decided yet if I will bother to read the rest of the series.

I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn't even make it through the whole thing. The main character was just too annoying for me. I didn't like Betsy from the start, and I hoped as the book went on she would become less obnoxious. No such luck I'm afraid.

This is a breezy Sunday afternoon read. The heroine is a cross between Paris Hilton and Sailor Moon - bumbling, vain, obsessed with labels, and yet very loyal to her friends.
I was not impressed with the graphic sex, and the one liners get a bit tiresome.
Still, it's a fair enough "brain candy" book, that doesn't take itself too seriously, and doesn't waste your time trying to get you to take it seriously either.

This is the story of Betsy, who has a week from hell and winds up undead, only to find out that she's a prophesied 'Queen' to the vampires. Hilariously written, sarcasm and wit combine to make for a very sassy main character. The book is very easy and quick to read, the characters real and endearing.

Let me start off by saying that I'm not a huge fan of vampire books. I just don't have much of an interest. However, after reading MaryJanice Davidson's Fred the Mermaid series, I decided to check this series out. I'm glad I did. Betsy is likeable, Sinclair is sexy, and the book in general is LOL funny. I look forward to #2- Undead and Unemployed. It isn't heavy vampire readiing, but it's gory enough for me. :)

I think Davidson too funny... a very light, funny and enjoyable read! And so are the additional books in the series... I am on #3 now! If you like this book you may also like Charline Harris's Sookie Stackhouse novels. Though if you though this had too much sex you may have to go for young adult romances... try the Twilight series by Meier.

Breezy, easy afternoon read (only took me about three hours or so) with snappy dialogue and laugh out loud instances. The main character, Betsy, is a silly trollop who's very much into herself - oh, and designer shoes. Sort of a silly book, but amusing and I'm interested enough to read the next book.

Betsy started to nag on me after a little while - Davidson had her attitude bump up throughout the book so while she's a smart-talking secretary at the start, towards the end she's constantly making wise cracks at everything and anything's expense. Almost Buffy-esque but trying too hard. Anywhoo, like I said, amusing and easy read with a few down points - let's see how the second book fares!

Entertaining first book in a series. Elizabeth Taylor (nickname: Betsy) is a secretary and ex-model. One night after eating at a chinese buffet she is attacked by a group and bitten but manages to get away. A few weeks later she is fired from her job, and hit by a car. She wakes up in a morgue. Bewildered, she soon finds out shes a vampire, but she possesses greater powers than a normal vamp. In fact, she may be the Queen fortold in vampire folklore. Meanwhile she is expected to overthrow the reigning badguy and avoid the advances of another vampire leader - Eric Sinclair. Very funny.

Oh this was too funny! I could not put this book down and read it in less than a week. I never thought I would be reading a book about vampires... I'm just not into the paranormal stuff, but it didn't matter for this book, I am so hooked! I love the fact that it is set in Minneapolis too... I'm from the mid-west and don't know if I've read a book so close to home before.

Had a difficult time with this book. The premise interested me, but I just found myself annoyed. I actually liked Betsey, I can relate to her love of shoes and I really liked the fact that she just wanted to live her own life and deal with being undead on her own terms. Jessica and Marc were the other characters that I enjoyed ~ they simply accepted what she was and ran with it, as well as her mom. But it was the other undead characters that simply annoyed me. I got that there was a prophecy and war between the vamps was about to explode, but Sink Lair (Sinclair) and Tina could have approached things differently with Betsy. I'm all for the whole Alpha Male thing, but Sinclair just didn't do it for me. I kept reading because I thought it would get better, and it did at times, but then I would just get annoyed. I did want to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it.

and doesn\'t think there\'s any reason to hide it.

When I first saw this on the shelf years ago I let a friend talk me out of purchasing it. We are talking back in the days when I think we were waiting for book 3 to release. Finally book 3 did release and I went ahead and purchased it all in one fell swoop. Somehow despite my friend's hatred of the series I knew I was going to love it. I did love it and I gobbled all three books up like they were going out of style.

Mary Janice Davidson is funny. She has a unique writing style unlike anyone else in this genre. She will make you laugh. Yes sometimes she is cheesy. Yes sometimes she is predictable. It does not matter. You will enjoy reading her books regardless of which series you buy. Her writing is always on the mark quality wise. She is a star out there shinning brightly among so many dim lights. Many try to imitate her but nobody can do what she does.

I liken this book to a B horror movie. You don't watch a B horror expecting much other than gore, T&A, and cheese.

Betsy is amusing but I got tired of her after a while, especially since this was a first person POV. But Davidson does write well (though she could have toned down the sex scenes), and at least she allows her other characters to acknowledge that Betsy is a ditz.

It's a quick read and if you space the novels out, you will be able to stomach Betsy more readily.

Betsy Taylor is having a bad week. First she loses her job as a secretary, then while trying to rescue her cat she gets hit by a car, next she wakes up in a coffin in the funeral home and she's dead. She refuses to be dead so she just continues her life much to the amazement of her friends and family. This is a funny book. Betsy is a cute and sometimes overly chatty character. I enjoyed this fast read and am looking forward to her further adventures. If you liked the Sookie Stackhouse books or the "Don't talk back to your Vampire" series, you should enjoy this one too.

I was kind of unsure whether or not to order this book, but I'm glad I did. It's more of a comedy than a paranormal romance, which is what it says on the book. I don't read romance novels, but it's hard for me to resist a book about vampires, so I took a chance. If you're looking for an easy read that will make you laugh out loud, then this one is it. If you're looking for a romance, then you should probably pass over this book. The romance was pretty much just a sub-plot. Betsy is the heroine, not the damsel in distress.

I wasn't anticipating the sexual overtones in this book. Now, I'm not a prude but it seemed a little...forced. Almost like the sex/feeding aspect was for shock value as it really didn't add to the story - it was more of a distraction than a addition. Other than that, I enjoyed it. The side characters are very entertaining. I'll give this series another shot.

This book should come with a trigger warning. Honestly, the terrible predatory, sexual harrassing "love interest" is rage inducing. But he's a vampire, so that's okay?!? No. But then it get worse. Because then, the author writes a main character who, when faced with a vampire who thankfully did not rape her, asks herself if it's because she's not pretty enough. I'm sorry, but I can't support a book that holds this kind of abusive sick behavior as romantic or one where the main character has such a horrifying amount of internalized misogny. The book deserves to be lost to history and deserves -5 stars.

This is a story I want to like more than I do. It's a really cute twist on the paranormal genre... but I found the main character unbelievably annoying -- as in 'no one could be THAT shallow'. Still, there is a charm in the lighthearted treatment of 'vampires' and I do love the idea of a girly-girl vampire, so I am willing to give the series one more try.

It is a very quick read, and that's on the plus side as well.

In Book 1 of MaryJanice Davidson's Queen Betsy series, Undead and Unwed, Betsy Taylor has had a horrible day. First, she loses her job as a secretary. Then, when she gets home and goes outside to retrieve her cat, she is hit by a car and instantly killed. So that's the end of everything... right?

Not exactly. Betsy wakes up in her own coffin, dressed in a cheap pink suit and horrible shoes all courtesy of her gold-digging stepmother. It seems that thanks to a late night attack outside of a Mongolian restaurant, Betsy is now a vampire. As she is soon to find out, not just any vampire. She is, in fact, the supposed Queen who has been prophesied to free the vampires from their current leader, an iron fisted man named Nostro. She doesn't believe it at first and only wants to live her undead unlife the same as she lived her life, including shopping for expensive, designer shoes. But it is hard to ignore that not only is she unlike humans, but she is different from other vampires, too. Men and dogs are drawn to her, conventional weapons such as crosses and holy water are ineffective, and she doesn't need to feed nightly as other vampires do. She is extraordinary for a vampire, which gives credence to the claim that she is meant to be the Queen.

Undead and Unwed isn't one of those serious 'the plights of a new vampire' type novels. There's no Louisesque pondering of the soul and spirit, that 'mortal coil' that is referenced. No, this book will have you laughing from page one. You are drawn in by the utter insanity of this poor young woman's life, by her failed attempts at self-annihilation, and her personal opinions about what she has become. Because, really, how would your every day girl feel about suddenly becoming a vampire? It would be a little surreal, yes, but I also think anyone would react the way Betsy did: with a logical, "nu-uh!"

Though I have to admit that sometimes I was frustrated by Betsy's inability to be serious or mature for even a moment. The conversations had throughout the novel were nothing more than witty banter back and forth... I don't think anyone had a serious conversation the entire book without something 'clever' being said somewhere in retort. I like the book a lot, but I do hope that as Betsy gets used to being a vampire, especially as Queen, she matures a bit and cares a little less about sarcasm and shoes and a little more about the big picture. I don't know if I would want someone who can't so easily look below the surface of a situation as my Queen! But, hey, that is what development is for and none of us is perfect, right? Betsy provides a lot of amusement and laughs, so I have to think her for that even as I sometimes wanted to strangle her. I mean none of the above as criticism, don't get me wrong, because I loved the book. And I like a character that is imperfect because, come on, how many annoyingly perfect leading female characters are there out in the world of literature? Too many. We need a good, ultimately heart-warming but superficial shoe lover to remind us that some characters can be great and entertaining without being perfect.

I hope that the next book is as much fun as the first. And, of course, that she continues to both love and loath Sinclair. It would totally ruin the fun if they get all lovey so soon. I really enjoyed the two of them mutually disliking but wanting each other.

Undead and Unwed
4 out of 5

Sometimes a narrator can really make or break a book. In this instance Nancy Wu just blew it for me. I cant stand whiney voices and though she is trying to portray a whiney self centered character she just took it too far.

But -- the storyline, well that is different and the reason I added an extra star. The story is very well paced with a dont know whats coming next feel that has you laughing out loud.

Not only is life challenging when you are named Elizabeth Taylor, but when you wake up after being hit by a car and you are in a coffin, wearing the ugliest clothes that your evil stepmother could dressed you in, life can only get better. Well, that is if you think being a Queen Vampire is better.

Betsy isnt your usual vampire; she doesnt burn in the sun, can wear a cross and doesnt have to feed like the average vampire. This alone makes Nostro, the evil vampire leader, want Betsy dead, but with the help of a very desirable Eric Sinclair, they take on this dictator and total hilarity pursues.

A wee bit adult at times, but still very funny and definitely a series to follow. But not on audio, Ill stick with the books.

Loved this book enough to read seven more in the series. This is of the Charlaine Harris- Sookie Stackhouse type of vampire book. Contemporary, flirty, fun, sassy, sexy. Of the series, this was one of my favorites. I'm never a big fan of female characters who are "dumb" but this one works despite her flighty, self-centered behavior. Lots of hilarious one-liners and silly puns. So fun to read you don't want to put it down. I wasn't sure until closer to the end if her relationship with Sinclair was going to be hit or miss, but I found the love scene at the end pretty convincing.

This made for an easy, if not silly read. Honestly, a big part of my enjoyment of this series is based on the books being light, quick reading with easy to understand characters and short chapters, which I can fit in throughout the day without having to go back over anything if I've been interrupted (My kids are 5mo and 19mo, need I say more?). Even if the reading level is pretty low, the books manage to provide momentary relief between watching "Brainy Baby" and listening to Wiggles' soundtracks. I hardly have time for something that requires a bit more brain power, so this suffices to amuse me for now.

I really want to get more reading done in my busy world, and I could not have found a more fun book to read first. With my TBR pile so high, it may be a book or three before I get to the next one, but I can't wait. This book was clever, delightful, sometimes laugh out loud funny and very endearing. You can hear the sarcasm in "Betsy's" tone. Reading this book, you just know you're in for a fun adventure. WOULDN'T YOU want a vampire as a best friend forever? Emphasis on forever.

When the novel begins, Elizabeth "Betsy" Taylor is already (un)dead. The day before her death unfolds in which she is late for work, fixes the copy machine for her incompetent coworkers, and chases after her cat who is stuck in snow on the other side of the road. A truck hits her while she crosses the street and her body slams into a tree, killing her. She wakes up in a funeral parlor dressed in a tacky, pink power suit and her stepmother's last year, knock-off designer shoes. It's her mission to recover her designer shoes from her stepmother, which she does within the first forty pages, and then the rest of the novel is focused on other vampires mixing her up in their politics.

Betsy angered me. I found her to be unlikeable, both as a narrator and a main character. She's a completely passive character. Shes incredibly whiney. She mentions her heightwe get it; youre talltoo often (see: height breakdown). Her judgment is lacking. When she wakes up from her death, her first instinct is to attempt to kill herself repeatedly by jumping off a building, drowning herself in the Mississippi River, electrocuting herself by grabbing a power line, drinking a bottle of bleach, stabbing herself in the heart with a butchers knife, and getting the tar beat out of her by muggers. None of them work but she tries over and over again as if she thinks, Maybe this time Ill die! Betsy is trying to kill herself when she intervenes in a mugging. She wants the men to beat her to death and, you know, not rape and murder the woman and her daughter. The daughter tells Betsy shes a vampire because she sees Betsy's fangs hanging out. Up until that point, Betsy thought she was a zombie despite having an unquenchable thirst. Shes so stupid.

The adventures of Elizabeth Taylor(not the actress ;-D!!) begin when she is bitten by a pack of Fiends--and becomes not only a vampire, but finds out she is their Queen-to-be...the only catch is, she has to best the reigning baddie, Nostro, and hook up witha domineering, irriatitng vampire named Eric Sinclair.
What's a poor vamp to do when all she craves are designer shoes??

For all you Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans out there, you won't be disappointed by Betsy Taylor, Queen of the Vampires. Undead and Unwed is a fresh and funny look at what happens when a snarky, shoe-loving, confidently single gal in the nondescript twin cities takes her popular girl personality into the realm of the Undead.

Betsy is out of her element surrounded by sullen, poorly dressed blood suckers who fail to appreciate her sense of humor and her irreverance for their centuries-old traditions, which makes for several laugh-out-loud funny moments.

This book was pretty good. It kept me entertained, but I'm sort of on the fence on whether I really liked it or not - I mean it was good, but not great.. and I'm still not quite sure if I like Betsy (the narrator), she annoys me and then she doesn't.. very strange. I think I'll have to read the next one just to see where Davidson takes this as a series, and so I can grasp a better opinion on it, lol.

I wasn't too sure about this series of books. I like my series books to have a lot of substance and not much fluff. BUT this book was all mindless fluff and I loved it. I am glad I ordered book one and book two together because I finished both of them in less then 3 hours and can't wait to read the next book in the series. I laughed at many places and although Betsy is a little bit of a ditz she also has a good heart and is likable. Hard core vampire fans might not like this book, as it is more of a chick lit, with some undead thrown in, but if you read the book knowing it is going to be a light fun read then you won't be disappointed!

I'll admit I expected not to like this book. I don't like flighty shallow heroines, and I'm very picky when it comes to comedy in books. I'm sorry to say this book didn't really prove me wrong.

It's the first person account of Betsy becoming a vampire. Betsy seems dimwitted and self absorbed, but to give her credit she does have a good sense of humor. At first it was mildly amusing to read about her "death", and subsequent inability to truly die. That lasted about 50 pages. Then the evil stepmother showed up, having stolen Betsy's shoes after she "died" and I lost interest. Aside from the fact that the constant naming of brands (she goes on and on about the shoes!) was driving me crazy, I just couldn't deal with the simplistic characterization and melodrama.

My impression of this book was that it's a lot like a soap opera, but with a vampire as our person of interest. To some this may be appealing, and if your looking for a mindless laugh I'd say go for it. Not for me, though.

I really wanted to like this book. The premise seemed interesting. The main character however killed it for me. There was no way for me to identify with the heroine's personality and gives me nothing to make me want to see her be victorious. The sexual elements of the plot in an of themselves were not a problem for me but there seemed to be moments that were included purely for shock value.

Well, this was lighter than dandelion fluff, and I breezed through it in just a couple hours. It's told by a first-person narrator, Betsy Taylor, a tall blonde former model with a smart mouth and a lust for designer shoes. She has a very, very bad day which ends with her being laid off from her dead-end job and then hit by a car & killed. Only this is a black comedy, so it's not as appalling as it sounds. In fact, Betsy's still narrating this (kind of like William Holden floating in his swimming pool) because she wakes up in the funeral home as a vampire with supernatural powers. In fact, she is the queen of the vampires. This was a sexually frank book, even a little kinky, but above all, it's an amazingly efficient mechanism for delivering one-liners, one after the other, at the rapid pace of a TV sitcom. This author's a great joke writer! Though the jokes are so topical in some cases that I wonder if they'll make sense to some readers in about five years. Sorry, when I heard the love interest had an Elvis pompadour, that killed the sexual chemistry for me (ha!), because I pictured the older, double-chinned Elvis, stuffed into a jump suit. Still, the book does really well exactly what it set out to do: beguile away three hours or so by making you laugh. Though I'm not going to pursue the series any further, I can see why it might be addictive. But also, why for some, the joke-after-joke dialogue might wear out its welcome after a while.

It's been a helluva week for Betsy Taylor. First, she loses her job. Then, to top things off, she's killed in a car accident. But what really bites (besides waking up in the morgue dressed in a pink suit and cheap shoes courtesy of her stepmother) is that she can't seem to stay dead. Every night she rises, with a horrible craving for blood. She's not taking too well to a liquid diet. Worst of all, her new friends have the ridiculous idea that Betsy is the prophesied vampire queen, and they want her help in overthrowing the most obnoxious power-hungry vampire in five centuries, a badly dressed Bela Lugosi wannabe, natch. Frankly, Betsy couldn't care less about vampire politics, but they have a powerful weapon of persuasion: designer shoes. How can any self-respecting girl say no? But a collection of Ferragamos isn't the only temptation for Betsy. It's just a lot safer than the scrumptious Sinclair, a seductive bloodsucker whose sexy gaze seems as dangerous as a stake through the heart...

The first book written about Betsy Taylor, "Queen of the Undead". When Betsy wakes up thirsting for blood, her new vampire friends tell her she's the prophesized vampire queen. Betsy could care less about politics; all she wants is a large stash of designer shoes. So that's how the vampires get her interested in helping them overthrow a power-hungry vampire - by promising her a shopping spree for designer shoes! By the end of the book, Betsy has accepted her new status in life (or is it non-life?). But Ferragamos shoes and other shoes of that ilk are still a priority with Betsy. I gave this book an 8 score since I didn't find it as funny as the reviews on the cover claimed but it was humorous nonetheless. Betsy is basically a shallow character, not because she's obsessed with designer shoes, but because she's oblivious to most of the vamps and people around her. She's a ditzy character on the surface which makes this book a fun, light hearted read that took me only one night to finish.

This book was cute and funny. Betsy (Elizabeth) Taylor is so not like any other vampire you've ever met (or read about). Holy water, crosses, even sunlight cannot hurt Betsy, and as she learns to come to terms with her newly undead life, she learns the ropes of Vampires 101 from the tall, dark, and gorgeous Sinclair, whom she both lusts after and despises all at once. The other vampires she's met have begun to notice these differences in Betsy as well and claim her to be their prophesied Vampire Queen, a job which Betsy vehemently denies. A battle ensues in which the tyrannical Nostro, who has ruled the vampires for hundreds of years, must be overthrown in order to return peace to the vampire community.

The quirkiness of this book had me laughing out loud at times, and I'm looking forward to reading Undead and Unemployed, the next in the series. The short story by Mary Janice Davidson in the Cravings anthology, Dead Girls Don't Dance, takes place between the events of Undead and Unwed and Undead and Unemployed. Betsy and Sinclair only make a minor appearance in that story, with the focus being on Andrea, a vampire making her way from Chicago to St. Paul to pay homage to the new Vampire Queen.

The first in a series of five books written by Mary Janice Davidson about Betsey Taylor. She just lost her job, and is having a really horrible day when she finds out not only is she dead, but she is undead and is foretold to be the new queen of the vampires. Very funny and a geniunely likeable heroine.

Funny first book of this series:

First Betsy Taylor loses her job, then she's killed in a car accident. But what really bites is that she can't seem to stay dead. And now her new friends have the ridiculous idea that Betsy is the prophesied vampire queen, and they want her help in overthrowing the most obnoxious power-hungry vampire in five centuries.

At first I thought this book was a little hokey but then I really got in to it. The author writes with with a wonderful humor and a sort of realism. I can easily picture the heroine selling out for designer footwear! I know people just like her. Great book, can't wait to read the next in the series!

The first of the Queen Betsy books was a fun read. Elizabeth Taylor, that's her real name and she's heard all the jokes, gets hit by an SUV and dies, then wakes up in a coffin, and begins a new life as a vampire. She meets some interesting characters, including a love interest and his archenemy. I cannot wait to read the rest!

This book is funny if you don't take it too seriously. Quick, easy read. Made me laugh. I would have liked the main character better if she'd had some depth, she is pretty superficial. I'm hoping her character will develop as the series contines. Good descriptions throughout the book.

Betsy Taylor loses her job, is killed in an automobile accident and, just to make things more interesting, rises from the dead. This is the first book in the series.

The first of the Davidson's Betsy Taylor series. Betsy Taylor loses her job and then is killed in an auto accident. As if that isn't harsh enough, Betsy hears that she is a prophesied Queen of the Vampires. Most enjoyable, 'light' read.

Great Book. Very funny, Queen Betsy has a great sense of humor, and whitty "nick-names" and come backs. Her shoe obsession just adds to it. Great interaction and play between characters. Can't wait to continue with the series. Though the Author's website says to read two other books proir to this one for the series as it overlapps with another series.

I am new to this vampire genre stuff, so I found it a bit weird. But it is a very quick read. Quite funny in parts, very down-to-earth, girl-power kind of thing. Some spicy romance thrown in to make it complete.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how Betsy's character wasn't your average vampire(she goes against many of the so called myths)
She has some very interesting friends both human and vampire.

I actually didn't think I'd like this book. I gave it a try. Even though it took me a few pages to get into the book, in the end I found it entertaining. If you want something light, this isn't a bad read. I'm actually looking forward to reading the next one to see if it is more fun.

WAY to girlie, silly, one-line slop. Not a very good storyline either. Compared to Patricia Briggs and Kim Harrison, this is near the bottom.

Reading more like chick lit with some paranormal tossed in than a paranormal romance, Undead and Unwed is a delicious mix of genres featuring a main character similar to those found in Sophie Kinsella novels, only with the twist that she's been made into a vampire. A vampire who is most likely the prophesied queen of the vampires. Betsy has flaws, but she is witty and ultimately sympathetic. Additionally, the Minnesota setting makes for a nice change from the typical south/NYC/London usually seen in those genres. Lovers of either genre will enjoy this book, and I plan on reading the rest of the series.

Check out my full review.

Imagine dying, waking up in a morgue, and then trying to kill yourself again without success. Well, that happened to Betsy before she rudely discovered she was the Queen of the Vampires. A light, silly romp of a vampire book. If you need a quick read and enjoy a silly vampire series, then this is the one for you.

Undead and Unwed is a quick and easy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Betsy is hysterically funny. Absolutely self-absorbed and completely unapologetic. Watching her 'adjust' to being a vampire is worth the price of admission (so to speak) all by itself. Can't wait to read the rest

It's been a helluva week for Betsy Taylor. First, she loses her job, then to top things off, she's killed ina car accident. But what really bites (besides waking up in the morgue dressed in a pink suit and cheap shoes courtesy of her step-mother) is that she can't seem to stay dead! Every nite she rises, with a horrible craving for blood. She's not taking too well to a liquid diet!!
