Another great book by Greg Iles. A long winded but excellent author who can make 600+ pages seem like an afternoon read. This book is a "who done it" where justice is in the eyes of the beholder. You won't look at life (or kids) in a small southern town quite the same way again.
Helpful Score: 6
I love Greg Iles because I know I can pick up one of his novels and know what I am getting- a great suspenseful story with good characters who actually have character! In this one, a teenage girl turns up murdered in Natchez and Penn Cage is forced to try to help/defend his best friend from childhood. As more and more bodies turn up, the small town is thrown into turmoil.

Fascinating! I usually do not read books written in first person. This book grabs you from the first line and you are hooked! I loved it!It's the first book of Iles that I have read. I will be reading more of his work! Terrific reading and wonderfully, suspenseful writing.

What a twist - on almost every page. The book touches mature subject matter - murder with a sexual twist. It's an easy read, a true page turner. I can't wait to read more of Iles' books.

On the surface, Kate Townsend seems the most unlikely murder victim imagnable. A star student and athlete, she'd been accepted to Harvard and carried the hope and pride of the town on her shoulders. But like her school and her town, Kate also had a secret life-one about which her adult lover knew little. When old friend Drew Elliot, the highly respected doctor, begs lawyer Penn Cage to defend him , Penn allows his sense of obligaton to override his instinct and agrees. Yet before he can begin, both men are drawn into a dangerous web of blackmail and violence.
When Drew is jailed for the murder of Kate, Penn's case becomes increasingly different. With the help of black distrct attorney Shad Johnson, he must uncover the truth to save Drew's life, almost losing his own in the process and orphaning his only child.
My favorite Greg Isles book so far. Definately could not put it down.

This was a real page-turner from Iles. Although the novel was over 600 pages long, it seemed to fly by as the story gets more and more intense. I have read a couple of other novels by Iles including The Quiet Game which was the first in the Penn Cage series. Penn Cage is a lawyer/writer who returns to his hometown, Natchez, Mississippi, with his young daughter to try to relax and forget after his wife dies. In this outing, his old high school friend, Drew Elliot, is charged in the murder of a young high school senior, Kate Townsend, who he was having an affair with. Drew acknowledges the affair to Penn but insists he was in love with her and did not kill her. So then who did? The plot gets a little convoluted when it is found that Kate has been providing pain drugs to Drew's wife. The drug dealer evidently had a thing for Kate and wanted her badly. But there are also others that may have had a motive including the high school coach and a young high school exchange student from Bosnia who is also involved in the drug trade.
To me this was really a compelling story with a lot of twists and red herrings thrown into the story to keep you guessing. I really enjoyed this and will be looking forward to reading more in the series as well as Iles's other works.

Greg Iles is simply my latest "favorite author". This legal mystery is filled with page-turning excitement as paragons of the community are exposed as deeply flawed people struggling to find happiness. An illicit love affair between a beloved physician and his seventeen year old babysitter leads to unhappiness and murder. The twisted plot is so filled with suspense that I just read into the night until I finished it.

Enjoyable murder mystery with some legal intrigue
I don't know exactly how to describe this book. It is powerfully engrossing look at human nature - a thriller and psychological study that doesn't resort to preaching. I've immediately gone looking for other books by Greg Iles.
This, like every Greg Iles book I have read, grabs you from the first chapter and never lets go, taking you from shock to anger to surprise all through the book. He is an excellent writer and I highly recommend this book. Don't plan any early activities for the next day because you won't want to put this book down until the end...

The book was an easy read, most of it was very good, There was one part that seemed to stretch reality a bit... but with the world today maybe things could actually happen like that. Even so it was an entertaining read. I would defiantely read another book written by Greg Iles.

My Review
This is a story that will grab your attention right from the start. It was hard to put down and the plot had many twists and turns. The ending was a surprise that I didn't see coming. The subject matter was disturbing but the characters are very realistic. I loved the setting of the book - the South in Natchez Mississippi, a historic civil war city. I now look forward to reading the 3rd book of the Penn Cage series and highly recommend this author to those who love page-turning mystery novels.
