A muder mystery case with Dr. Scarpetta. This was really a good plot and kept you guessing.

To be honest, I was disappointed. This book did not compare to other Scarpetta series books. It seemed to be all background with no climax. There was never any sense of suspense or danger. Pretty boring for a Cornwell novel.

I loved this book. As usual it is Scarpetta through and through. This one tends to show more raw emotion than some of the other ones and exposes more of her personal life. If you are a Scarpetta lover, then is one for you!

Kay Scarpetta and Benton Wesley were planning a two weeks vacation in his Aspen cottage but at the last minute he cancels because he is counseling Lucy's girlfriend Henri who was attacked and almost killed while in bed in Luc's home. Someone is stalking one of the ladies, leaving a picture of an eye on her on her outside door and planting a bomb in her mailbox. Lucy is busy hunting down the maniac.
In the meantime Kay is called back to Virginia by the new Medical Examiner because outside forces wants a highly renowned ME to examine the body of fourteen year old Gilly Paulson. During the autopsy, Scarpetta discovers some bruises that proves she was killed while laying on her back while somebody's knee press her into her pillow so she couldn't breathe.
In the burned house across the way from Gilley's home, Henri and Marcus find mortuary magazines addressed to Kay's old work address in Richmond. Fingerprints show that the culprit is the same person who killed a child and almost murdered Lucy's lover but finding that person will take all the resources at their disposal.

EXCITING AND SUSPENSEFUL
Patricia Cornwell is one of my fav writers and she doesn't let you down in this one. This is the book where she picks up after being relieved of her duties in Virginia and is working with Lucy
I highly recommend this book as there are four or five stories going on simultaneusly that of course all tie up in the end. Typical Cornwell.

A wonderful Kay Scarpetta murder mystery.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta, now freelancing from South Florida, returns to the city that turned its back on her five years ago. Richmond, VA's recently appointed chief medical examiner claims that he needs Scarpetts's help to solve a perplexing crime. When she arrives, however, Scarpetta finds that nothing is a she expected: Her former lab is in the final stages of demolition; the inept chief isn't the one who requested her after all; her old assistannt chief has developed personal problems that he won't reveal; and a glamorous FBI agent, whom Scarpetta dislikes instantly, meedles with the case.
A compelling investigation of the murder of a young girl. Dr Kay Scarpella is back! Packed with action and suspense!
Scarpetta can't be beat!
I generally like Patricia Cornwell books. Murder mysteries are my favorite kind of book. This one was ok. Had a slightly surprising ending, as I recall. It's been a while since I read it.
Good Kay Scarpetta novel

Typical Cornwell thriller.
I have not read this book. I have it on audiotape and will listen to it instead of reading it.
I love all the books about Dr. Kay Scarpetta.. What a great character. I recommend it....
didn't read- this was given to me, and I got tired of Cornwell several books back!
DR. KAY SCARPETTA IS BACK WITH A VENGEANCE...

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is back. She's been freelancing from South Florida and returns to her old digs to help solve crime.
just OK.
Can not go wrong if you like Patricia Cornwell.....Dr. Kay Scarpetta is back in this trying to start over again....
Against advice from her niece Lucy, Kay Scarpetta answers a request to return to the Richmond medical examiner's office, the same office from which she was fired, to help with the sensitive case of a dead teen. When she and Pete Marino arrive, they find the new medical examiner to be a vituperative, uncooperative martinet and the office that Kay ran so efficiently in chaos. Two murders, oddly linked, demand their attention. In the meantime, Lucy, still unsettled despite her success with the Last Precinct investigative agency, is having personal problems (there's been an attack on her housemate), which strangely enough find her treading the same path as her aunt Kay. Traces of the smart, dynamic, yet vulnerable Scarpetta of the early novels are in evidence here, and Cornwell has better control of her plot and characters than in her last few efforts, faltering only occasionally when psychobabble weighs things down. The mystery is intriguing, there's plenty of forensic detail, and the ending, though perhaps too abrupt, opens the way for Scarpetta and her associates to proceed in any direction that calls to them.
This was a very good book, then action is a bit slow in parts, but very quick & gripping in most.

She must follow the twisting leads and track the strange details in order to make the dead speak--and to reveal the sad truth that may be more than even she can bear.
complecated plot great read
Another read on the edge of your seat by Patricia Cornwell, will not disappoint. Just as good as she usually is.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta is now freelancing in Florida and returns to Richmond, VA. after five years.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta is back with a vengeance. Hard to put down.
I have yet to read a Kay Scarpetta book that I didn't completely enjoy! This book is no exception!
I enjoy the Kay Scarpetta series.
Awesome book, really puts Kay back on schedule after Blow Fly. Must have for any fan of Cornwells
It was an interesting read, but I thought the ending was anti-climactic.
Another great installment of the Scarpetta series!
Author: Patricia Cornwell

My husband read the book and said it was excellent writing but was expecting a more police type ending.

AHHH..Kay Scarpella does it again. Great suspense read.
Another Kay Scarpetta book - and it's a good one! Not so much of Lucy in this one, but lots of Marino!
Dr. Kaye Scarpetta is back with a vengeance. Happy Reading!
"Make no mistake - this is not the great writing and plotlines of the early Scarpetta books, but it's also not as bad and maudlin as the last two have been. Cornwell seems to at least be making an effort to push Kay Scarpetta back to where she came from and it mostly works in this newest book." amazon review
This is quite good
Another great Scarpetta novel!
Go Kay, Go. I love Patricia Cornwell and this book does her proud.
This was an excellent CSI type mystery with plenty of clues and twists that were enjoyable. I don't like all of her books but the quality of writing here was impressive.
The first Kay Scapetta novel I've read, and I really liked it. I have already ordered another one. Very intriguing mystery.
Good book
I have always enjoyed Patricia Cornwell's works, but I think the first books were her best. This one, however is better than "Blow Fly."
An enjoyable book.
This is a good book.
She's still got the mojo!
Part of the Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner of VA, series. Several of the CSI episodes on TV are based on this series. I say, start at the beginning... check patriciacornwell.com for a list of all the books in the series.
Very good book and fast read
Typical Kay Scarpetta. I like the Virginia references and I felt like I was getting reacquainted with an old friend.
Love all of Patricia Cornwell's books. This one did not disappoint!
Much better than the last few in the series. Love the Scarpetta books.
I wasn't able to put it down! Read it in one weekend while I was away at a seminar/workshop. My first Scarpetta series mystery/crime novel by Patricia Cornwell. Great read (and great writer!)
This was a darker story than most of Scarpetta's other stories. Good though!
I am a big fan of this author and have read all her books. Really enjoy this series.
Book was great. I have not found one i did not really enjoy.
I am so glad I read the 1st of Cornwells books. I look forward to each one. She does not disappoint me.
I am so glad I read the 1st of Cornwells books. I look forward to each one. She does not disappoint me.
Again, Dr. Kay Scarpetta is the main character along with Marino, Lucy and Benton. This is a great book in the Kay Scarpetta series. Kay goes back to her hometown in Richmond Virginia to solve a crime. Marino accompanies her while Lucy and Benton are working on their own mystery. Kay has no idea what Benton is doing and Benton has no idea the danger Kay and Marino are in. A++
I have read the entire Scarpetta series and have loved them all. This one is no exception.

not really feeling the suspense like i did i the other books, but definitely still a good book! i think i should have read this back when it was first out. usually you can read the scarpetta books out of order but this one just didnt seem that way.
This is one of her best.

Best Scarpetta Yet
One of Kay Scarpetta's most puzzling and difficult cases...part of which involves the murder of a fourteen year old girl and very little evidence.
Very good!
Rich and satifying with Cornwell sprinkling a trail of tantalizing bread crumbs for the Scarpetta faithful, who are always hungry for the next installment. --The Associated Press.
Scarpetta series.
liked the main character, a strong, smart woman. also a good mystery.

Another quick page turner!
Can't go wrong with a Kay Scarpetta novel, although Cornwell's earlier Scarpetta are more thrilling.
Engrossing read. CSI fans should love it.
Classic Patricia Cornwell style. Includes all the favorite "Scarpetta" characters: Lucy, Rudy, Benton and, of course, Kay Scarpetta. If you're a Cornwell fan, you will not be disappointed.
Vintage Cornwell - Scarpetta novel. Police/M.E. procedural. Fast-paced.
A Scarpetta novel
good suspenseful book
good book of this type
I enjoy all the books in the Scarpetta Series, and this was another I just could not put down! Great Book
pure Cornwell
A great CSI story!
Book 13: Dr. KAY SCARPETTA Mysteries Series
A little scattered for a Cornwell novel. Good read though and leaves the reader with a few questions on the characters and their relationships
awesome Scarpetta book!
Dr. Kay Scarpetta returns to Richmond to investigate the death of a 14 year old girl.
This was probably my least favorite of the Kay Scarpetta books, but if you like Cornwall, you may like this one.

One of the better of the last several Kay Scarpetta novels.
Great read--one of her best.
I always read Patricia Cornwell's books as soon as they are released, but I found this one not as good as some of her older books. The addition of Lucy and her personal problems into her stories has taken away from the actual mystery/thriller facet of her books that I love the most. I adore Marino and I'm glad he's still with her, but after her departure from Richmond, I've never liked her books as well. This one kept me reading, as they all do, but not like her first books in this series. I just could hardly put those down.
All of the Patricia Cornwell books are great. This one has action, adventure, & murder.
Kay Scarpetta is a great character. Any of you that like Forensic Files will love these books.

Absolutely LUV the Scarpetta series! Very accurate forensics & as always, a gripping plot! Great for reading or on audio.
An intriguing cast of characters, with Dr.Kay Scarpetta at the forefront. I really had a hard time putting this one down. A good book for people who enjoy forensic/crime novels.
Great tale. Very suspenseful.
One of the best Scarpetta novels. I bought this book and 3 pages into it, I realized that I bought the hardcover copy last summer! Brand new--never read.
A very suspenseful mystery book!
another great Kay Scarpetta
This was one of the best Kay Scarpetta books I felt. I thought the author went into Kay's charachter in a lot more detail than in her previous books. I also liked the way Moreno was portrayed as i had also listened to a later book in which they kept on referring to him but I felt I had a better sense of him in this book(warts and all)
Another great Scarpetta read!!
Another of my favorite authors - love the medical examiner mindset.
Great book!!!! This is from the inside cover...Dr Kay Scarpetta, now freelancing from South Florida, returns to the city that turned its back on her five years ago. She must follow the twisting leads and tracks the strange details in order to make the dead speak and to reveal the sad truth that may be more than even she can bear.
This is typical Patricia Cornwell. In this latest Scarpetta novel, Scarpetta and her sidekick, Pete Marino, find themselves back on familiar stomping grounds. Kay Scarpetta is asked to return to Richmond, VA to investigate the unusual death of a 14-year old girl. The current medical examiner personally requests her help, but it is obvious by his attitude that he really does not want her there. So what's behind his request. This was a great read.
One of the best Scarpetta books yet!
The Dr. Kay Scarpetta series continues and is still a great read.
Very Good Read - Classic Cornwell
usual well written cornwell book
Patricia Cornwell is back in the game!
Kay is a great author.
Not one of her best. It seem she wrote in her sleep almost. You knew who the killer was from almost the start, which is not a typical Cornwall book. Also there was this really strange thing going where Scarpetta and Marino are in Richmond and having personal problems, Lucy is in Florida and having personal Problems and Benton is Aspen with a "freind" of Lucy and having personal problems and the book spends more time going back and forth between the personal problems of these 4 and the crime and the killer Scarpetta and Marino were called in to solve and catch just seem a minor roll.
If you a Scarpetta fan read the book to keep up with the soap opera, if you want to pick up a book to see what the fuss is about, I would not recomend this book at all. Black Notice, Body Farm, All that Remains are better books to read.

THis is a great Cornwell - book! It is scarey and fun at the same time.
Very scary. Good
While not the best mystery guesser, either Patricia gives this one away fairly early on or I was hypersenstive. The motive was a bit harder to define.
Mature hard writing
A Kay Scarpetta mystery. This takes place after she has been fired from Richmond and has moved to Florida. She is asked to come back to Richmond for a highly sensitive case that involves the death of a 14 y/o girl in her bed with absolutely no evidence to prove how she died.
----------------
I enjoyed book but I'm not sure it was as good as some of the earlier Scarpetta mysteries when she was still in Richmond.

What Can I say......She is awesome !
Fantastic. This is one of my favorite authors.
Patricia Cornwell always writes interesting and intriguing novels.
It was ok....not as good as the other Kay Scarpetta books. Had trouble really getting into the story line.
Cornwell is upping the ante in the gruesome department. And her old standby characters are suddenly undergoing big personal changes.
I love Kay Scarpetta, but I could not get into this book. I have Predator & will give her another chance
somewhat different, but still enjoyed...
I couldn't put it down.
Had stopped reading Cornwell books for a while ... thought they were becoming stale. However, this one is classic Cornwell! All the characters were back and involved. Loved Marino's part in it.
An okay Scarpetta novel - moved slower than I recall others going, but still a good read.
Back in the day, I used to read all of Patricia Cornwell's books until she started to get off track of the actual murder mystery and more into the romance, etc., and then I stopped reading her. After many years, I thought I'd try her again to see if she's gotten any better. Sad to say, I think she's gotten worse, if that's possible. For instance, there is a scene where she's back in Virginia, in the morgue where there are bodies being autopsied. One is a very old man and another is an obese woman. Cornell goes on and on using derogatory and disrespectful terms to describe the obese woman, even during times when it's obviously NOT necessary; yet she doesn't give the same negative or insulting comments about the old man, whereas she certainly could have...very easily. Cornwell's prejudice against large/overweight people really screams out in this book. Whereas I'm an average-sized person, I know and love a variety-of-sized and aged people, so this really ticks me off.
Alas, I finished listening to this book on CD, which, even though it is NOT abridged, had plenty of...skipped...areas that didn't make sense or follow the logical path. I found myself backing up on the CD and listening to certain parts again, asking myself, "What did I miss?" and yet it was never there. It leaves the reader wondering how in the world did we jump from one scene to the next.
What COULD have been a good story and thriller turned into plain old crap with Cornwell's biases and bad writing, not to mention the poor editing job. I will never try Patricia Cornwell again, which is too bad, as years and years ago when she first started out, she was quite good. Perhaps the fame and fortune attacked her ego? Oh well, there are so many other, better authors out there to explore!

Very good I really enjoyed it
Kay Scarpetta series. After a houseguest of Scarpetta's neice is attacked, the hunt is on to determine not only who the assailant is, buy why he has targeted Lucy, and whether the strange death of a young girl in Virginia is connected to the case.
Cornwell as good as usual
If you like the Scarpetta novels you won't be let down. A quick read and a page turner.
Not the quality of Cornwell I was expecting. Still a decent read.
If you love Kay Scarpetta, you'll love this book. Scarpetta is called back to Virgina to advise on the death of a 14-year-old girl. With Marino by her side, Scarpetta is forced to work with the smallest bits of evidence available on the vic - TRACE. Lucy and Benton have their own problems at the moment, so Scarpetta and Marino are on their own. As she travels down memory lane she soon realizes things at the lab have gone down hill since she left. The new Cheif Medical Examiner hates her and rumors fly about her return to Virginia..............This is a must read for all Scarpetta's fans.
This is another excellent book by Patricia Cornwell. Dr. Kay Scarpetta returns to Virginia after being fired from her job when she is asked to consult on a case there.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta returns to Richmond and her former lab when she's asked to consult on the death of a young girl. Scarpetta suspects murder, but her investigation is thwarted at every turn. Carolyn McCormick does an excellent job of conveying the persona of the serious Scarpetta. Each chapter and twist in the story is enhanced by her inflection and tone. The listener feels the frustration and anxiety Cornwell conveys in her characters. McCormick's delivery of the final chapters continues to draw the listener in as the story approaches its conclusion and the tension builds.
Cornwell is good as usual. This is a Scarpetta novel I believe it is the latest as of Summer of 2005. I liked it because it moves Scarpetta on into her retirement and lets her move around and also allows her to still have a romantic life in her 50's. Ahh there is still hope.
As always Corwell's book are great mystery reading and I always learn something new from the medical side.
Good Cornwell, Complex plot line, but not well developed. Diverting reading
Dr. Kay Scarpetta returns to her old office five years after being fired to work on the death of a teenage girl. Lucy and Benton Wesley are working on another case together where an employee of Lucy's company was assaulted. Wouldn't you know it, these case are going to be linked in some manner. Of course, Pete Marino is back and we get some insights into his character.
Loved it!
Patricia Cornwell is an excellent mystery writer.
A really fast-paced read. As creepy as a Kay Scarpetta novel gets.
Dr. Kay Scarpetta, now freelancing from South Florida, returns to Richmond,Virginia. The chief medical officer in Virginia needs Scarpetta's help. Scarpetta is investigating the death of a fourteen-year-old girl. Scarpetta is working with the smallest pieces of evidence without help from Benton or Lucy.
A Kay Scarpetta Novel
Dr. Kay uses trace evidence to investigate the mysterious death of a fourteen year old girl.
Dr. Kay uses trace evidence to investigate the mysterious death of a fourteen year old girl.
Kay rallies in this book, even though things are not like they were before she moved to Florida. It keeps you on your toes as only Patricia can.
Unfortunately, Cornwell has abandoned the fascinating world of forensic pathology and has chosen to focus on Lucy's personal life, Kay's personal life and self-important beliefs in her own omnipotence and how whoever runs the ME's office has run it into the ground. This book is a hodge-podge of ridiculous story lines surrounding their personal lives. Between Lucy's self-destructiveness and Kay and Benton's strange, masochistic, long-distance relationship where each is revealing some sort of martyr and self-pity streak, what was to be (or should have been) the main story line of the person bent on hurting the ME's office and harming Lucy was pushed aside.
Starting with the second book that Cornwell wrote concerning the French wolfman, she has subverted the pathological issues (which is what I liked about the earlier books) to issues regarding Lucy's and Kay's personal lives. It seems (and now I am being an amateur psychologist) that Cornwell cannot come to terms with the fact that Lucy is a lesbian. Instead of just treating her as a fact or trait in Lucy's life, she has chosen to focus on it interminably, like Cornwell has trouble accepting it or trouble dealing with it.
Overall, this book disappointed me. But, in its defense, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the next one, Predator, which takes all of what I see as shortcomings of Trace and just escalates them. There, she merely adds Marino to the mix. It's sad. I just keep reading each one hoping and praying that she will bring back what was so good about the earlier Scarpetta books.

There, she merely adds Marino to the mix. It's sad. I just keep reading each one hoping and praying that she will bring back what was so good about the earlier Scarpetta books.
Dr Kay Scarpetta!!! Love all of these books. As The New York Review states She is back with a vengeance. This book moves along, as with all of the Scarpetta Novels. Loved it!
A Dr. Kay Scarpetta novel - another great mystery/crime/thriller, actually all three. Fast-paced, and hard to put down. You'll enjoy every page of it.
good read
Another Scarpetta novel - good read
Hard to put down...it's solid and tightly paced.
Typical, dark, brooding Scarpetta novel, but once you begin the Scarpetta series, you want to continue.
Dr Kay Scarpetta is back with a vengeance.....
Good plot line. Not as much forensic jargon in this one, but still keeps your attention. Worth a read!!
Kay Scarpetta books are always a good read. . However this one moves a little slow. Not one of her best.
Not as good as her earliest books, but an okay read.
Witty dialogue, a couple of creepy twists and and an entertaining storyline...Dr. Kay Scarpetta and her colleagues are up to their usual tricks.
Not one of her best, but good reading
Another Cornwell masterpiece!!!!
Cornwell is back to the Kaye Scarpetta theme with a novel that is nearly back to the way the early ones were
Scarpetta returns to Richmond, Virginia to her old stomping grounds at the request of the new chief medical examiner to help find the cause of death of a 14 year old girl. Excellent reading.
Not quite as exciting as her other books, but that's just my opinion.
Very good mystery. I really enjoyed it!
Classic Cornwell and then some--can't beat it!
I think this wone is better than some of the previous Scarpetta novels I have read.
Another fascinating Scarpetta novel -- this time she returns to
Richmond, VA, to help solve a perplexing crime. When she arrives,
however, Scarpetta finds that nothing is as she expected .... a real
page turner!

A much improved Cornwell after the debaucle of Isle of Dogs. I wondered for a while if Cornwell was having second graders write for her. Although this may not be as good as she's been, Scarpetta is back and maybe, therefore, so am I.
Dr Kay Scarpetta back again.
Kay Scarpetta!
One of Cornwell's best.
Good book by Cornwell.
Good Scarpette novel. Not one of the best, but still a good read.
typical cornwell, why she would go back to virginia after all that time, she should know she is asking for trouble. murder-of course
I love Patricia Cornwell but for some reason I could not stay with the story of this book because of too many characters and too much going in each character's story. I did not finish reading it.
Gutsy Kay Scarpetta is back in action.
very interesting mystery. keeps you turning the page
Kay Scarpetta is back in Virginia doing what she does best as a coroner. Very good book with many twists and turns.
Very good book as usual by Patrica Cornwell. Always good with Dr. Scarpetta in them.
A look inside how twisted this world really is. What's sad and scary is I'm sure there's a lot of warped people in the world like this. A good book.
This book is missing the cover sleeve..
i know it will be good yet i have not read it yet. but i am sure it will be just as good as her others
good book
Even though the main characters have moved on to new endeavors, the stories keep you on your toes wondering what happens nest
Kay Scarpetta series. After a houseguest of Scarpetta's neice is attacked, the hunt is on to determine not only who the assailant is, buy why he has targeted Lucy, and whether the strange death of a young girl in Virginia is connected to the case.
Cornwell has finally reached her previous level of writing.
great story
A good Scarpetta mystery.
I liked this book much better than the last 2 Kay Scarpetta stories. I almost didn't read it. If you like this series you will like this book very much.
Good book but not enough detail to start out.
Enjoy all "Scarpetta" stories 5 star
Beautiful gift copy.
Against advice from her niece Lucy, Kay Scarpetta answers a request to return to the Richmond medical examiner's office, the same office from which she was fired, to help with the sensitive case of a dead teen. When she and Pete Marino arrive, they find the new medical examiner to be a rude, uncooperative puppet and the office that Kay ran so efficiently in chaos. Two murders, oddly linked, demand their attention. In the meantime, Lucy, still unsettled despite her success with the Last Precinct investigative agency, is having personal problems (there's been an attack on her housemate), which strangely enough find her treading the same path as her Aunt Kay. Traces of the smart, dynamic, yet vulnerable Scarpetta of the early novels are in evidence here The mystery is intriguing, there's plenty of forensic detail, and the ending, though perhaps too abrupt, opens the way for Scarpetta and her associates to proceed in any direction that calls to them.

Kay Scarpetta returns to Virginia to help chief medical examiner.
Cornwell is always an engaging author!
I really enjoyed this book.
This was a GREAT read. Near the end I couldn't put it down.
NY Times Bestseller. One of her better murder mysteries. Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner....she is faced with the investigation of the death of a 14 yr old girl and working with only the smallest piece of evidence--traces that only the most thorough hunters can identify. She must follow the twisting leads and strange details in order to make the dead speak.
One of the better ones. Most people didn't like this one.
I really did.
I really did.

Dr. Kay Scarpetta, now freelancing from South Florida, returns to the city that turned its back on her five years ago. Scarpetta is faced with investigating the death of a fourteen year old girl, working with the smallest pieces of evidence-traces that only the most thorough hunters can identify.
One of the later books in this series (#13?), maybe I'm getting tired of it, but it seemed a bit disjointed...Scarpetta is back in Richmond with Marino to investigate the death of a young girl, someone else was attacked at Lucy's house and that victim is now staying with Benton in Aspen....I guess it all fits together in the end, but loosely.
good
