Time is a River is a great novel about a woman learning to live as a breast cancer serviver. Mia's sister signs her up for a trip to the North Carolina mountains with a group of cancer servivers learning to fly fish. She returns home to find her husband in bed with another woman. Her retreat back to the mountains and her hunt for the truth about the woman who once lived in the cabin and was accused of murder helps Mia to heal. Mia continues to develop her skills as a fly fisher woman, makes new friends in the area, finds romance and discovers her true self. If you love nature and a good mystery, this is the book for you. It was a page turner for me all the way.

I read almost 200 pages of this book before I finally just gave up. No murders yet, just talk about fly fishing.

One of the most well-crafted stories I've ever read.....detailed and enticing, this story wraps itself around you and doesn't let you go until the final page. And even then, you'll be wishing for a sequel so that we find out what happens next in their lives!

A heartwarming tale of a breast cancer survivor finding herself and finding romance through the unlikely art of fly fishing. I LOVED this book! It was my first experience with Mary Alice Monroe's writing, but it will NOT be my last. Ms. Monroe has the ability to create a great story line woven with a bit of mystery and adventure. Great characters, so real you will feel as if you've met them before! Ms. Monroe's writing reminds me a little of Anne Rivers Siddons. I say that as a compliment as Ms. Siddons is another great story teller that I admire very much!
As a breast cancer survivor, I adored this book! For me, it was a fast read. I had trouble putting it down. I was captivated with its charm!

i enjoyed this book. good summer reading. maybe i will take up fly fishing.
Star rating--4 stars; I really liked it.
Very good treatment of a married woman coming to terms with her husband's decision to get a divorce. She goes to a mountain cabin which serves as a retreat, where she comes to grips with her life, her husband, her sister, and with herself. She basically re-invents herself and comes to like/respect the new person she has become.
Characters are well-drawn; actions are plausible; and outcomes are consistent with life.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. I always enjoy books by Mary Alice Monroe.

I enjoyed reading this book. The main character shows incredible inner strength and, despite being a cancer survivor, is fun-loving and gracious. I felt she would make a good friend.
Recovering from breast cancer and still reeling from the revelation of her husband's infidelity, Mia Landan flees her Charleston home for the healing serenity of the mountains near Asheville, North Carolina. She seeks refuge in a neglected cabin belonging to her fly-fishing instructor, Belle Carson.
Belle has recently inherited the cabin, which once belonged to a grandmother she never knew - a legendary fly fisher and journalist from the 1920s. Kate Watkins may have once been spoken of with great reverence and pride among her peers, but after she is accused of murdering her lover, her life falls into ruins. Her fortune lost in the stock market crash and her reputation utterly destroyed, Kate retreated into seclusion in the remote cabin. After her death, the fishing cabin remained locked and virtually abandoned for decades.
Little does Belle realize that by opening the cabin doors to Mia for a summer's sanctuary, she will be reopening the scandal that has plagued her family for generations.
From her first step inside the dusty cabin, Mia is captivated by the remnants of Kate's mysterious story left behind in the eccentric furnishings of her cabin. And though Belle, ashamed of the tabloid scandal that tortured her mother, warns Mia not to fan the flames, Mia feels compelled to find out more about Kate...especially when she discovers Kate's journal.
The inspiring words of a remarkable woman echo across the years; and Mia - just learning to fly-fish - finds Kate's wise words comparing life to a river resonate deeply. She begins a quest to uncover the truth behind the lies. As she searches newspaper archives and listens to the colorful recollections of the local residents, the story of a proud, fiercely independent woman emerges.
Mia feels a strange kinship with the woman who, like her, suffered fears, betrayal, the death of loved ones, and a fall from grace - yet found strength, compassion and, ultimately, forgiveness in her isolation. A truly inspiring story is revealed - timeless in its appeal, with the power to reopen old wounds, but a story which also is a miraculous balm - bringing peace and healing for Mia, for Kate's descendants, and for all those in Mia's new community.
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. I found that the plot was relatively fast-paced - although there were some scenes that moved along at a more leisurely pace. Overall though, this was a very quick read that drew me in right from the beginning. I was also intrigued by the mysterious subplot and wanted to know what would happen next. I give this book an A! and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Excellent story about one woman's jurney in redefining herself.
As a breast cancer survivor I found this book to be a wonderful journey. Since reading I have often wished I had a remote cabin to go heal in.
Excellent content. Will be a good book for our book club discussion in February.
Thoroughly enjoyable. I couldn't put it down.
This book took me a while to get through. Very involved story about a woman recovering from breast cancer surgery who has a getaway to a fly fishing camp in the woods to clear her mind and body. I now know more than I ever wanted now about fly fishing! The character decides to stay up in a deserted cabin owned by the woman who leads the group, who's family owned the cabin. While she is taking time to think about her life, she gets absorbed by the life of the woman who once lived in the cabin. There are the usual quirky towns people, and a bit of romance. Will a mystery be solved? Mary Alice Monroe has a great way of telling her stories
I enjoy all Books by Mary Alice Monroe.....wasn't sure if this story would interest me...It did and I am glad I read it.
Fast becoming a Mary Alice Monroe fan. Really enjoyed this book. Although the book had a lot about fly-fishing, something that has never held any interest for me, the story was so strong that wasn't an issue. Learn something new every page. Good read.
Mary Alice Monroe draws you right into the story. I love each and every one of her books.
This book was a grabber from the first page. Once I started I could not stop .

Slow reading, but "nice" book.
Wonderful story of a woman betrayed while at her weakest physical and emotional time but soon finds herself equally guilty of the same act of betrayal of her one caring friend. I was enraptured by this touching tale. One woman gone for half a century is beloved by those who KNEW yet misunderstood by most others. Only One woman knows the real Kate Watkins and her own grandchild only feels shame and fear due to Kate's sordid reputation. I too was swept up in the diaries of a 12 year old charmer and the diaries of a woman of passion and loving dedication. Kate's story of riches to ruin. The Watkins family lost everything except this little enchanted cabin on the creek where love and catch and release are the rule. I truly loved Kate and "Time is a River" and was happy to have spent nine hours with these remarkable women of the river..
Really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!
