This is the very first Mary Balogh book I ever read, and it was fantastic. It's a quick read, has sensous moments and her portrayal of one event even brought tears to my eyes. (Could have been hormonal, but it was still very moving). Definitely understandable why it won the RRA Best Regency Romance in 1997. For those who like conflict within the regency era societal proprieties/improprieties and like your heroes/heroines to be of some nobility, it's the right genre and book for you.

Gentle woman Miss Charity Duncan applies for a job of governess and learns a Mr. Earheart really wants a mouse of a wife to enrage his father that he has not seen in 8 years. She needs money to help support her brothers and sisters, so a bargin is made. Only it doesn't turn out the way they plan-- for either of them.

I got this book in a bag of books to be posted to PBS from a friend. Happened to glance at the back cover and was intrigued enough to start reading. Naturally as soon as it was posted, it was on someone's wish list. Delayed accepting the request for a couple days until I could read the book. I think I've read stuff by Mary Balogh before and agree she is a good author. This book was a quick and fun read. Enjoyed the interplay and wonder if such things would really happen, but you never know. Was a fun temporary diversion and if you like regency romances, this one is worth reading.

Miss Charity duncan had no illusions when she said yes to the marriage proposal of Lord Anthony Earheart this arrogant aristocrat made it painfully clear what he wanted of her. Great book.
