This is a great book. It is a true story about a young woman teaching in the bush of Alaska in 1927. Along with the obstacles of weather and lack of supplies, she has to deal with racism against Indians that she didn't expect. The descriptions of Alaska, makes you feel as if you are right there. This story has a lot -- history, travel, coming-of-age, adventure and love.

This book was absolutely wonderful. Get it! Even my Mom loved it, and she's not a big reader. True-to-life story of a woman who moves to a remote Alaskan village to teach.

I found this book difficult to read, not because it is poorly written but because the story is claimed as a true one. As a researcher engaged in a project about the Fortymile and who knows the Purdy family, I can say that Tisha is a highly fictionalized account of Anne Hobbs' first year in Alaska in a town called Chicken. Read it and enjoy it as an adventurous love story but don't believe it and certainly don't try to do any genealogical or geographical research based on it.

This was a wonderful book! It really helps the reader to visualize what Tisha encountered when she moved to Alaska in 1927 to teach school. It really made me appreciate the people that settled Alaska. What strong individuals they were.

I enjoyed this book. Learned many things I didn't know about prejudice in Alaska at the time this book was set in. Made me glad I have central heating in the school I work in.

TISHA is the story of a young woman in 1929 who "pulled up all stakes" to go to Alaska to teach. Racial prejudice toward Native Americans - and especially toward those of a mixed race - is a major theme, but so is the strength of the human spirit and reconciliation. The title comes from one "half-breed" (as used in the book) child trying to call her "Teacher" but it sounded like "Tisha."
I found this to be a fascinating story of life in then relatively- unsettled Alaska.

Heard about this book from a friend. It was very interesting,if you like historical novels. Story about a young woman starting out to teach in 1927. She went to the wilds of Alaska and it was very much a wilderness in 1927. This was her first experience teaching in Alaska. It was a tiny gold-mining community called Chicken.

I absolutely adore this book! You can tell I'm a bit enthusiastic about it, right? Tisha the young teacher has the chance of a lifetime to teach in Alaska. She jumps at the chance. Her adventures and her life are a thrilling tale to tell. And it's not FICTION - it really happened. After reading the library edition - I sent away for a really nice copy because I wanted it for my permanent library collection. A keeper. Recommend.
